Popov explores the mystique of the face not only as the primary organ of human individuation and the immediate modulus of interpersonal recognition, but with respect to such intriguing intangibles as the eternal dialectic between objectivity and subjectivity and the face’s ambiguity as both mirror and mask. A victim of the Soviet government’s animosity towards religion, he was condemned to a Siberian labor camp in 1933 where he continued his work under increasingly difficult circumstances. He was executed in 1937.
