Book Motor Function of the Pharynx Esophagus and Its Sphincters

Download or read book Motor Function of the Pharynx Esophagus and Its Sphincters written by Ravinder Mittal and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deglutition or a swallow begins as a voluntary act in the oral cavity but proceeds autonomously in the pharynx and esophagus. Bilateral sequenced activation and inhibition of more than 25 pairs of muscles of mouth, pharynx, larynx, and esophagus is required during a swallow. A single swallow elicits peristalsis in the pharynx and esophagus along with relaxation of upper and lower esophageal sphincters. Multiple swallows, at closely spaced time intervals, demonstrate deglutitive inhibition; sphincters remain relaxed during the entire period, but only the last swallow elicits peristalsis. Laryngeal inlet closure or airway protection is very important during swallow. Upper part of the esophagus that includes upper esophageal sphincter is composed of skeletal muscles, middle esophagus is composed of a mixture of skeletal and smooth muscles, and lower esophagus, including lower esophageal sphincter, is composed of smooth muscles. Peristalsis progresses in seamless fashion, despite separate control mechanism, from the skeletal to smooth muscle esophagus. The esophagus's circular and longitudinal muscle layers contract synchronously during peristalsis. Sphincters maintain continuous tone; neuromuscular mechanisms for tonic closure in the upper and lower esophageal sphincters are different. Lower esophageal sphincter transient relaxation, belching mechanism, regurgitation, vomiting, and reflux are mediated via the brain stem. Table of Contents: Introduction / Central Program Generator and Brain Stem / Pharynx-Anatomy, Neural Innervation, and Motor Pattern / Upper Esophageal Sphincter / Neuromuscular Anatomy of Esophagus and Lower Esophageal Sphincter / Extrinsic Innervation: Parasympathetic and Sympathetic / Interstitial Cells of Cajal / Recording Techniques / Motor Patterns of the Esophagus-Aboral and Oral Transport / Deglutitive Inhibition and Muscle Refractoriness / Peristalsis in the Circular and Longitudinal Muscles of the Esophagus / Neural and Myogenic Mechanism of Peristalsis / Central Mechanism of Peristalsis-Cortical and Brain Stem Control / Peripheral Mechanisms of Peristalsis / Central Versus Peripheral Mechanism of Deglutitive Inhibition / Neural Control of Longitudinal Muscle Contraction / Modulation of Primary and Secondary Peristalsis / Neural Control of Lower Esophageal Sphincter and Crural Diaphragm / Lower Esophageal Sphincter / Swallow-Induced LES Relaxation / Crural Diaphragm Contribution to EGJ and Neural Control / Transient LES Relaxation and Pharmacological Inhibition / Compliance of the EGJ / References

Book Vagus Nerve

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 140 pages

Download or read book Vagus Nerve written by Clive Collins and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: h1>Description Do you want to learn how to activate your vagus nerve, unleash your body's natural ability to healing yourself? If yes, then keep reading...The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body, reaching out from the brain stem as a pair of nerves, one for controlling each side of the body. It got its name from the Latin word for wanderer (vagus) because it wanders throughout the entire body. This is an apt description as the vagus nerve impacts in some way nearly every organ in the body. The vagus nerve is part of the body's parasympathetic nervous system. It provides you with the fight or flight instinct when presented with some sort of sudden, unexpected, or threatening situation. As part of the parasympathetic portion of the autonomic nervous system, the vagus nerve acts as an inhibitor for the sympathetic system, providing a counterbalance to the initial panic from the sympathetic system, and allowing the body to calm down. The vagus nerve's motor functions extend to the medulla oblongata - where autonomic responses are regulated by the brain, while its sensory functions are directly tied to the cranial neural crest, where the body's facial muscles reside. This means the vagus nerve is informed and impacted by the very gestures of our face. The vagus nerve is connected to the neuroception system of the body which helps us gather information to determine the safety of our environment on an unconscious level. This book covers the following topics: How can stress and anxiety affect your body and life? Inflammation, and what a stimulated vagus nerve can do about it Self-help exercises for anxiety Causes of anxiety, depression, and inflammation Vagus nerve dysfunctional signal Trauma Potential dysfunctions Illnesses caused by stress The polyvagal theory and PTSD Power of your body Body and mind control connection ...And much more Another aspect of the vagus nerve is that fully 80% of all the information is traveling from the organ systems up this nerve to the brain, while only the remaining 20% of its function involves information traveling down the nerve to the organs and lower systems. We usually think of the brain as being the originator of all information regarding our surroundings, but really it is the individual systems that begin the process, such as the eyes that see telling us what our surroundings look like, ears that hear telling us what sounds are nearby, the nose gathering in and reacting to scents constantly, and the taste buds on the tongue telling us what we need to know about the food we put in our mouth. Skin receptors tell us what the air feels like, what we are touching at the time, and many other things that we only pick up on a subconscious level. The vagus nerve can be damaged by diabetes, upper respiratory viral infections, alcoholism, or through an accident during an operation. Stress, fatigue, anxiety, and even bad posture can also have a negative impact on the vagus nerve. Do you want to know more on how to prevent it? Book Microbial Endocrinology The Microbiota Gut Brain Axis in Health and Disease

Download or read book Microbial Endocrinology The Microbiota Gut Brain Axis in Health and Disease written by Mark Lyte and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-05 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of microbial endocrinology is expressly devoted to understanding the mechanisms by which the microbiota (bacteria within the microbiome) interact with the host (“us”). This interaction is a two-way street and the driving force that governs these interactions are the neuroendocrine products of both the host and the microbiota. Chapters include neuroendocrine hormone-induced changes in gene expression and microbial endocrinology and probiotics. This is the first in a series of books dedicated to understanding how bi-directional communication between host and bacteria represents the cutting edge of translational medical research, and hopefully identifies new ways to understand the mechanisms that determine health and disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you experiencing severe forms of anxiety, stress, depression, or other forms of conditions such as chronic inflammation? Do you know there is an essential nerve in your body called the vagus nerve that can significantly alter these conditions for the better? Do you want to know how to activate your vagus nerve to improve your overall health and wellbeing once and for all? If so, then this book is for you. Many attempts have been made to understand what facilitates the transmission of information between the brain and the organs of the body. As advances in technology and medicine took place, it has now been discovered what role the tenth cranial nerve called the vagus nerve plays in the human body as regards this. The vagus nerve, a nerve most people have not heard of, is the most complex and extending nerve system in the human body with connections to virtually almost all areas of the body. It controls and facilitates some of the essential processes our body undergoes, such as moderating heart rate and blood pressure, formulation of antibodies and equipping the immune system to fight against infections and diseases, and extends its roles to include aiding digestive processes, among many others. This nerve, which also controls the release of antidepressants and hormones, explains why it impacts virtually every emotional and physiological event we experience, and this includes stress, anxiety, and depression. Should any damage be done to this critical nerve, the consequences can be far too alarming to grasp. Hence, the importance that this nerve is adequately tendered and stimulated for optimal functioning. Perhaps your current state of health falls under any of the mentioned health conditions and/ or you are seeking to gain more knowledge on the inner workings of this nerve and how you can activate the power of your vagus nerve to overhaul for the better, your overall health and mental wellbeing, then not too worry because this book would: 1. Provide you with a 360-degree view of what the vagus nerve is. 2. Explain the critical functions the vagus nerve performs in the human body. 3. Enlighten you on the health conditions and diseases associated with a damaged vagus nerve. 4. Explain what a vagal tone is, its importance to your health, and how to increase your vagal tone. 5. Describe natural exercises, practices, and methods you can start right away to stimulate your vagus nerve. 6. Help you unlock the power of your vagus nerve to enable you to take full control of your health and overall wellbeing. And a whole lot more! If so, then keep reading... Within each and every one of us, there is a major nerve. This nerve runs throughout most of the body, from one end to the other, and is able to interact with all of your vital organs. From your heart to your lungs to your stomach and even your colon, one particular nerve controls it all. This nerve is your vagus nerve. Known as the vagabond nerve, this nerve is able to go throughout your entire torso, making sure that your body is functioning as it should be to ensure that, at the end of the day, your body is able to keep itself alive. It regulates your heart rate. It controls your breathing and blood pressure. It controls your digestion. It even controls how you interact with the world around you. This particular nerve also controls your ability to respond to trauma and stress. It is what is able to help you shift from calm to having the energy to protect yourself back to calm again in a relatively short period of time. However, sometimes, this nerve does not function properly. Instead of functioning like a normal nerve, it malfunctions - it causes more problems than it solves, and when that happens, your body begins to suffer for it. You can begin to train it to function properly, and this audiobook is here to teach you how. Within this book, you will find: How the vagus nerve is able to control the vast majority of your body's vital functions without you ever being aware of it The ways in which your body is able to make use of its autonomic nervous system - the nervous system that controls your involuntary actions. Several exercises that you can make use of to help tone your own vagus nerve to get it working for you And a lot more! Do not hesitate, take control now, buy now!
