Book Language Policy Ideology and Educational Practices in a Globalised World

Download or read book Language Policy Ideology and Educational Practices in a Globalised World written by Delombera Negga and published by Archives contemporaines. This book was released on with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges posed by globalization for languages, policies and education form the basis of this collection of selected doubly-blind peer-reviewed articles, which have been put together following the 2014 PLIDAM conference on “Policies and Ideologies in Language Teaching: Actors and discourses”. The chapters collected in this volume revolve around the topic of globalization, which we understand to be a blend of ideas covered by at least four meanings: (1) internationalization, in reference to the growing interdependence and transactions between countries; (2) liberalization, which has to do with the forming of an ‘open’ and ‘borderless’ world economy; (3) universalization of certain phenomena around the world; and (4) westernization, with an emphasis on the influence of Western values (gender equality, freedom of speech and other ideas inspired by the West) over the rest of the world. The four broad themes that the chapters are organised into are (I) Policies in Language Teaching and Learning; (II) Language Policy, Ideology and Minority Languages; (III) Language Teaching and Learning across Cultures; (IV) Language Teaching and Learning with Technology. Contributing to the knowledge, discussion and debate about the impact that globalization has had on languages, policies and education in a wide variety of contexts, we hope that this book will be useful and informative to language researchers, policy makers and anyone with an interest in the intersecting field between languages, policies and education.

Book The Winter Line

Download or read book The Winter Line written by Ken Winkler and published by Author House. This book was released on 2010-03-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry Obst interpreted for seven American presidents. This book takes a look at five of them from the interpreter's perspective inside and outside the Oval Office: Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan. Most Americans have very little familiarity with professional interpreting, a profession known fairly well in Europe and Canada. After finishing WHITE HOUSE INTERPRETER, the reader will understand what interpreting is all about and why this profession is of considerable importance to many segments of our society: from the White House to the courthouse, from the military battlefield to our hospitals. Many thousands of highly trained professional interpreters and translators help the European nations and other highly developed countries successfully export large amounts of goods and services and keep millions of jobs at home. Obst examines the dismal training picture in the United States and urges remedial action. The book is written for the general reader. The author avoids the linguistic jargon. He mixes the technical information with interesting anecdotes, many of them never published before.

Book excerpt: An Indian-American anthropologist, whose own dramatic marriage was arranged in his non-vegetarian polygamous priestly family background, struggles to find a vegetarian and sexy bride for his U.S.-born lawyer son. The long journeys from America to India move the bride search, through social-cultural ups and downs, with girls after girls, and their spicy episodes, stirring up the anthropologist抯 own bittersweet memoirs. A wife begs a man to spare her abusive husband抯 life; a bride at the altar refuses to marry due to greed; a woman drinks cow urine because a low-caste man saved her; a man urinates over a wild tiger; a girl disappears minutes before the parents want to introduce her to the visiting bride searchers; a bridegroom is beaten by his relatives hours before the marriage; policeman on orders to stop marchers beat, rape and shoot women; and deeper discoveries. Some are highly controversial as they involve big political, historical and international names and events. Then the search takes an abrupt turn. Overall, this provocatively entertaining novel offers intercultural education by interweaving religion and mythology, folklore and literature, historical accounts and personal philosophy of fair human contact. Anoop Chandola, born in India, presently a professor of East Asian Studies at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona.
