Book excerpt: Engaging in regular activity during childhood contributes to better cardiorespiratory fitness and a greater likelihood of being active in adulthood. Yet, few youth in the United States meet the United States Department of Health and Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommendation of 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity (MVPA) per day. Concomitantly, the prevalence of childhood obesity remains alarmingly high in the United States with 31.8% of youth classified as overweight or obese. There are a multitude of factors that contribute to the development of obesity, including physical activity patterns. Engaging in regular physical activity has been associated with a wide range of health benefits, including improving body composition. The school setting has been postulated to be a desirable place to promote physical activity because youth spend a large portion of their day in school and have the chance to expend up to half of their daily energy. However, the opportunities for youth to be physically active have been declining as physical education programs continue to be eliminated and recess time shortened in schools. Additionally, the availability of technology has increased in recent years and made engaging in sedentary behaviors, such as playing video games and watching TV, more accessible. Yet, there is potential in incorporating technology related to exercise into school-based programs to generate interest in physical activity. Further, there are many determinants of physical activity to target for effective interventions, including physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and environmental factors. Investigating how we can target these determinants in obesity-prevention programs can lead to a greater understanding of how to encourage youth to develop lifelong physical activity habits. The overall objective of this research was to investigate how utilizing technology in the school-based, multicomponent nutrition program, the Shaping Healthy Choices Program (SHCP), can help increase youth engagement towards physical activity. The first objective of this research was to determine the impact of the SHCP on physical activity patterns in a sub-sample of fourth-grade youth. Physical activity has been shown to have a wide range of beneficial health effects, yet few youth meet the United States physical activity recommendation. To address the increased prevalence of childhood obesity, the SHCP was developed based on principles of the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 adaption of the Social Ecological Model. The program was implemented over nine months among fourth-grade youth. One intervention school and one control school within the same Northern California school district were selected to participate in this sub-study. At pre- and post-intervention assessments, youth wore a PolarActive monitor on their non-dominant wrist 24 h/d for at least 2 consecutive days. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book excerpt: Increasingly, efforts to promote and measure physical activity are achieving greater precision, greater ease of use, and/or greater scope by incorporating emerging technologies. This is significant for physical activity promotion because more precise measurement will allow investigators to better understand where, when, and how physical activity is and is not occurring, thus enabling more effective targeting of particular behavior settings. Emerging technologies associated with the measurement and evaluation of physical activity are noteworthy because: (1) Their ease of use and transferability can greatly increase external validity of measures and findings; (2) Technologies can significantly increase the ability to analyze patterns; (3) They can improve the ongoing, systematic collection and analysis of public health surveillance due to real-time capabilities associated with many emerging technologies; (4) There is a need for research and papers about the cyberinfrastructure required to cope with big data (multiple streams, processing, aggregation, visualization, etc.); and (5) Increasingly blurred boundaries between measurement and intervention activity (e.g., the quantified-self /self-tracking movement) may necessitate a reevaluation of the conventional scientific model for designing and evaluating these sorts of studies. There have been many recent, disparate advances related to this topic. Advances such as crowdsourcing allow for input from large, diverse audiences that can help to identify and improve infrastructure for activity (e.g., large group identification of environmental features that are conducive or inhibiting to physical activity on a national and even global scale). Technologies such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and accelerometry are now available in many mobile phones and can be used for identifying and promoting activity and also understanding naturalistically-occurring activity. SenseCam and other personal, visual devices and mobile apps provide person point of view context to physical activity lifestyle and timing. Further, multiple sensor systems are enabling better identification of types of activities (like stair climbing and jumping) that could not previously be identified readily using objective measures like pedometers or accelerometers in isolation. The ability of activity sensors to send data to remote servers allows for the incorporation of online technology (e.g., employing an online social-network as a source of inspiration or accountability to achieve physical activity goals), and websites such as Stickk.com enable individuals to make public contracts visible to other users and also incorporates financial incentives and disincentives in order to promote behaviors including physical activity. In addition, the increasing use of active-gaming (e.g., Wii, XBox Kinect) in homes, schools, and other venues further underscores the growing link between technology and physical activity. Improvements in mathematical models and computer algorithms also allow greater capacity for classifying and evaluating physical activity, improving consistency across research studies. Emerging technologies in the promotion and evaluation of physical activity is a significant area of interest because of its ability to greatly increase the amount and quality of global recorded measurements of PA patterns and its potential to more effectively promote PA. Emerging technologies related to physical activity build on our own and others’ interdisciplinary collaborations in employing technology to address public health challenges. This research area is innovative in that is uses emerging resources including social media, crowdsourcing, and online gaming to better understand patterns of physical activity.

Book excerpt: It is well established that childhood and adolescent overweight and obesity represents a major health concern in the United States and is related to worsened physical and psychological outcomes (Dawes, 2014; Ebbeling, Pawlak, & Ludwig, 2002; Jeffery, Hyland, Hosking, & Wilkin, 2014). Not surprisingly, this worrisome trend is linked to decreased engagement in physical activity and increased engagement in sedentary behaviors, which begin to escalate exponentially around age nine and are most commonly observed during after school time (Eime, Harvey, Sawyer, Craike, Symons, & Payne, 2016; Wickel & Belton, 2016). Recent studies suggest that incorporating media technology into programs aimed at increasing physical activity among children and adolescents might increase their effectiveness (Chaplais et al., 2015; Martin et al., 2015). Unfortunately, these methods are relatively understudied. The current study evaluated the efficacy of a physical activity intervention that used media technology and is designed for adolescents. Participants from middle schools were assigned to one of three groups: the Exercise-Technology group, who used media technology to guide their engagement in physical activity, the Exercise-Only group, who engaged in physical activity without using technology, or the Control group, who did not engage in physical activity during intervention sessions. Participants engaged in a five-session intervention. Data regarding exercise engagement and enjoyment, use of technology, and pre- and post-assessments measures of mood, self-esteem, eating behaviors, and perceived barriers to physical activity were collected. Data was analyzed using primarily one-way- and mixed-analyses of variance. Analyses revealed that the more time participants spent using technology, the less time they spent engaging in physical activity. However, in general, there was no support found for the hypothesis that participants in the Exercise-Technology group would display more favorable outcomes for all study measures when compared to the Exercise-Only group, which would show more favorable outcomes than the Control group. Factors that may have limited the effects of this intervention are discussed, with specific emphasis given to the short duration of the current project and recommendations for future development of physical activity interventions.

The majority of students do not achieve adequate amounts of PA daily and weekly. Physical education is a major source of PA for many children, therefore teachers have to do their best to help their students achieve as much time in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) as possible. Technology has become a major part of the world and it is suggested that teachers can use it to help students achieve higher amounts of MVPA in class. However, it is unclear how exactly these technologies influence and encourage students’ activity. The purpose of this study was to determine how technology implementation can best help students achieve more MVPA time. Thirty-three children from a school in the mid-west volunteered to be a part of this study. Students wore accelerometers and heart rate monitors in class for 9 basketball lessons. Various conditions were implemented to see how the students reacted to the different technology pieces. It was found that students achieved significantly more MVPA time when they had feedback from the heart rate monitors than when they had not feedback about their performance. Students also achieved significantly higher MVPA when the feedback gave them a goal for the class, however the MVPA time achieved with the goal was not significantly different from having only the feedback without goal. The results showed that students are able to achieve significantly higher amounts of MVPA when they are receiving feedback from technology than when they are only wearing the devices.
