Book excerpt: According to research evidence, the relationship between vocabulary and reading proficiency is so powerful that it is a valuable predictor of reading comprehension and academic achievement in the later school years (Scarborough, 2011). The major contributor to reading problem is the vocabulary demand of texts that students are assigned in school (Mckeown, Corsson, Arts, Sandora, & Beck, 2012). National Assessment of Education Progress (National Center for Education Statistics, 2012) stated the essential link between the words students know and students' ability to use those words to understand what they read. Therefore, researchers and educators have both agreed the importance of minimizing vocabulary gaps in order for students to be able to succeed academically and deal with rigorous content (Sparks, 2013). This case study examined the effects of how utilizing an iPad would enhance a student's engagement in vocabulary learning. A third grade student performing below grade level in reading comprehension and vocabulary participated in this study. The research took place at the University of Central Florida, College of Education, Reading Clinic. This research study concentrated on five different iPad applications that focused on enhancing the student's engagement in ways to use the iPad to engage students with vocabulary learning. The data obtained from this research were gathered through pre and post vocabulary test developed by the researcher to assess the student's learning gains. In addition, multiple sources such as attitude pre and post survey, game results, and observations were also collected. At the end of the research, the participant displayed tremendous learning gains in vocabulary. In addition, the researcher concluded that utilizing an iPad significantly enhanced the student's engagement in vocabulary learning.

With regards to vocabulary in language learning, teachers should provide students with tasks which promote high levels of motivation and resultant engagement. The recent trend of online systems which have dynamic, collaborative, and even competitive style approaches can potentially take students to new levels of physical and psychological engagement in and out of the classroom. Despite newfound enthusiasm for such systems, there is currently little data regarding student engagement in using such systems when compared to textbooks or other more traditional paper-version approaches. Recent survey data from 131 Japanese university students on the use of a vocabulary learning system (Quizlet, http://quizlet.com) was collected. Findings unsurprisingly showed a clear improvement in the overall engagement of students through using an online system to learn vocabulary. However, a great deal more research is needed to ensure that such engagement amongst students actually leads to better learning and acquisition of words compared to traditional paper-based learning methods. Book excerpt: This study sought to identify a relationship between the use of the vocabulary app Quizlet and student motivation in the secondary English classroom. The research investigated whether students who regularly use the Quizlet app for vocabulary practice are more motivated to acquire new vocabulary and whether using the Quizlet app results in an increase on vocabulary test scores. The research was performed in a public suburban high school in the Midwest of the United States. A total of 56 students from 2 honors-level English classes led by a single teacher engaged in a 1-month unit of study centered on the novel Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. One class was assigned to be the experimental class and used the Quizlet app during classroom instruction time. The other class served as the control group and did not use the app during class. Pre- and posttests were administered to assess student vocabulary specific to this unit of study, and a motivational survey was given to students both before and after the study. The results of the motivational survey indicate that usage of the app results in a decrease in student perception of the difficulty of vocabulary acquisition as well as an overall increase in student motivation toward the task of vocabulary acquisition. The results also show that there is a significant difference in the gain scores between the experimental and control classes, with the control group making greater gains, although this result is likely due to their lower pretest scores. Paired-samples t tests revealed significant increases in vocabulary scores for students in both the experimental and control classes. Further research is needed to fully understand the effects of technological apps on student motivation toward the task of vocabulary acquisition.
