This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursing educators are increasingly utilizing high-fidelity simulation to provide realistic educational experiences to prepare students to enter the workforce. High-fidelity simulation is utilized with the belief when students encounter real-life patients they will be more confident in their ability to care for them. This quantitative study examined the effects of high-fidelity simulation on senior nursing students perceived self-efficacy and perceived practice readiness. The sample (N=48) consisted of senior associate degree nursing students at a community college in the Southeast. The findings showed high-fidelity simulation had a positive effect on students perceived self-efficacy and perceived practice readiness at certain points in the study, while other times not demonstrating a positive correlation. Implications for use of simulation as a teaching strategy in nursing education and recommendations for future research were proposed.

Book Impact of High Fidelity Simulation on Nurses Self confidence While Performing Adult Cardiac Life Support

Download or read book Impact of High Fidelity Simulation on Nurses Self confidence While Performing Adult Cardiac Life Support written by Reshmi Saji Kappattil and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's health care environment requires competent staff that can care for patients' consistently changing conditions. High fidelity simulation is important to nurse clinical educators as an alternate method to provide experiences that assimilate, expand, and enhance their self-confidence. National League for Nursing states that nurses' self-confidence improves the performance level in life saving conditions (National League for Nursing, 2013). The problem statement of this Direct Practice Improvement (DPI) project was the following: It is not known to what extent using high fidelity simulation in adult cardiac life support (ACLS) renewal courses increase the self-confidence of nursing staff. The purpose of this quantitative project was to determine if high fidelity simulation increases nurses' confidence level while performing ACLS. The clinical question was the following: Does using high fidelity simulation in ACLS renewal classes increase nursing staff's confidence level and improve their performance at work? The theoretical foundation for this project incorporated Benner's Novice to Expert model. The design of this DPI project was a pre- and post- survey. A paired t-test was used to analyze the data. The population was 64 registered nurses who self-enrolled for an ACLS class using simulation. Statistical findings of this project suggest that high fidelity simulation increases the self-confidence level of the nurses.

Book Knowledge Attitudes and Self Efficacy Changes in Advance Care Planning with a High Fidelity Simulation

Download or read book Knowledge Attitudes and Self Efficacy Changes in Advance Care Planning with a High Fidelity Simulation written by Amisha Parekh de Campos and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Advance care planning (ACP) conversations aim to ensure the articulation and documentation of patients' health care goals. These conversations should occur early and longitudinally. However, they are often not done or not done iteratively. Clinicians lack training and knowledge in ACP to have effective conversations. Therefore, a simulation was developed and tested among registered nurses (RN). Aim: This study aimed to examine the feasibility of an ACP simulation called Conversations Had at Trying Times (CHATT) among RNs, and to explore changes in knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy. Theoretical Framework: A framework was developed with the National League of Nursing Jeffries Simulation Theory and Bandura's Self-Efficacy Theory. Method: The study consisted of two phases: a) simulation development, and b) simulation testing. Construct and content validity guided the development of the simulation using DeVellis's (2017) scale development guidelines and the International Association of Clinical Simulation in Learning Standards of Best Practice: Simulation DesignSM. Simulation testing consisted of a pilot one-group pre/posttest design. The Caring Efficacy Scale and the Advance Care Planning Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practice Behaviors Scale were used to assess knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy among RNs. Evaluation of the simulation was done with the Simulation Design Scale and Student Satisfaction and Self Confidence in Learning Scale. Data analysis consisted of statistical analysis of mean change from pre-to-post simulation, and calculations of correlations between variables and demographics. Results: A researcher-designed high-fidelity simulation enhanced nurses' skills with CHATT. Thirty-six RNs completed the simulation in groups of four to eight in six simulation sessions. Knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy increased pre-to posttest. Evaluations post-simulation confirmed the feasibility of the simulation. The largest variation in results was found among the scores and experiences of the graduate nurse resident groups who worked as RNs for less than one year. Significance and Conclusions: This is the first high-fidelity simulation that was developed and validated for RN education in ACP conversations. Newer nurses with less than one year of experience had the lowest scores, which suggests a need for professional development in hospice and palliative care, curriculum development among nursing schools, and strong mentorship in caring for seriously ill patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Book Student Nurses Perception of Self efficacy and Perceived Clinical Judgment Through the Use of Multi patient Simulation

Download or read book Student Nurses Perception of Self efficacy and Perceived Clinical Judgment Through the Use of Multi patient Simulation written by Laura J Corson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New nurse graduates may be ill-prepared to care for multiple patients in the acute care setting due to limited clinical experience. Nurse educators must find ways of bridging the theory-to-practice gap. High-fidelity simulation is one mechanism for bridging this gap. This pilot study explored the effect of multi-patient simulation (MPS) on students' self-efficacy and perceived clinical judgment. This quasi-experimental study sought to explore the readiness of BSN students to care for multiple patients through the use of MPS and a self-efficacy survey measuring perceived level of confidence (LOC) in clinical care. Findings were inconclusive regarding whether MPS as a teaching method helped nursing students increase their perceived LOC and improve clinical judgment skills. Students agreed that the design should be part of nursing education and it identified gaps in their knowledge. This study raised an awareness of what students lack in terms of prioritization management when caring for multiple patients.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify and examine the effects of high-fidelity simulation on the knowledge of second semester associate degree nursing students at a small community college. The research question addressed was: Does high-fidelity simulation increase the knowledge level of second semester ADN students? Researcher developed pre and post tests were used to measure the effects of the simulation on the students' knowledge level. The data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, Version 19. Findings revealed a significant difference between the scores of the pre-test and the scores of the post-tests. The results of this study supported the use of the Nursing Education Simulation Framework (Jeffries, 2007) and identified the need for further research in a larger geographical area with multiple community colleges for a larger sample size.

Book The Effect of High fidelity Human Patient Simulation on Stress Levels of Associate Degree Novice Nursing Students

Download or read book The Effect of High fidelity Human Patient Simulation on Stress Levels of Associate Degree Novice Nursing Students written by Sallie Beth Todd and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursing students have identified the clinical learning environment as one of the most stress producing components of their nursing education. Past research has shown high levels of stress can lead to decreased learning, affect clinical performance, increase clinical errors, and threaten physical or psychiatric wellbeing. The primary responsibilities of nurse educators are to help students effectively cope with their initial stress and facilitate student learning by applying the knowledge they gain in the classroom to the clinical environment. To allow students the opportunity to integrate theory into practice, the use of high-fidelity human patient simulation is becoming more widely accepted in nursing education as an instructional methodology. This study demonstrated a relationship between the use of high-fidelity human patient simulation and the reduction of stress levels in novice nursing students that has not been previously reported in the literature. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of high-fidelity human patient simulation on the stress levels of associate degree novice nursing students prior to their first clinical experience. Fifty-five associate degree nursing students from one technical college tested the hypothesis that novice nursing students who receive practice on a high-fidelity simulator prior to their first clinical day will experience less stress and increased client system stability than those novice student nurses who do not. This study used a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest comparison group research design to examine self-reported stress levels on the Student Stress and Coping Inventory Clinical Experiences subscale (SSCI). Control group participants attended two clinical days in a skilled nursing facility on a long-term care unit. Intervention group participants attended a simulated clinical experience with a high-fidelity human patient simulator followed by a clinical day at the same skilled nursing facility as the control participants. The Betty Neuman Systems Model was used to investigate whether a simulated first day clinical experience will perform as a primary prevention as intervention method on system stability to reduce stressor reaction and protect the flexible line of defense for associate degree novice nursing students. Study results confirmed the hypothesis and revealed that intervention participants who did not report any experience in healthcare and participants who reported no employment in healthcare identified significantly lower levels of stress on their SSCI posttests compared to control group participants whose posttest stress scores increased. Preparation using a simulated first day clinical experience with a high-fidelity mannequin demonstrated to be a primary prevention as intervention method and increased novice nursing student system stability. Research findings confirmed a significant difference in overall mean stress scores between the intervention and control group participants who did not report any experience in healthcare and those who were not employed in healthcare. Control group participants reported higher stress scores following their initial clinical experience whereas intervention participants reported a decrease in stress following a simulated first day clinical experience and their first clinical day.

Book excerpt: Background and Objectives: Graduates from undergraduate nursing programs report inadequate death education. Most death education is focused on end-of-life care and taught by lecture. Students are not provided opportunities to reflect on their own feelings about death. Due to lack of clinical nursing faculty and shortage of clinical sites, students are spending less time in clinical experience and hence have fewer opportunities to experience patient death. This inadequate education can negatively impact patient care and may lead to an increase in turnover for recent graduates. Lack of proper training can cause inadequate communication of death to family members, which in turn can negatively impact family grieving. This study investigated the impact of an experiential learning strategy using high fidelity simulation to teach undergraduate nursing students about unexpected patient death. Methods: Senior nursing students were randomly assigned to a rescue or failure-to-rescue simulation scenario. Outcome measures included: (a) knowledge pre and post simulation, (b) cognitive load pre and post debriefing, (c) emotion pre and post debriefing, and (d) student self-confidence and satisfaction in learning. Data analyses included comparative statistics, t-tests, and two-way analysis of variance. Results: Three major findings are discussed: (1) no difference in knowledge gain between rescue and failure-to-rescue groups, (2) overall more negative emotional affect for failure-to-rescue group immediately following simulation, but no difference between groups following debriefing, and (3) no difference in satisfaction and self-confidence in learning between rescue and failure-to-rescue groups.
