Book Russian Soviet Unconventional Wars in the Caucasus Central Asia and Afghanistan Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Russian Soviet Unconventional Wars in the Caucasus Central Asia and Afghanistan Illustrated Edition written by Dr. Robert F. Baumann and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Includes 12 maps and 4 tables] In recent years, the U.S. Army has paid increasing attention to the conduct of unconventional warfare. However, the base of historical experience available for study has been largely American and overwhelmingly Western. In Russian-Soviet Unconventional Wars in the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Afghanistan, Dr. Robert F. Baumann makes a significant contribution to the expansion of that base with a well-researched analysis of four important episodes from the Russian-Soviet experience with unconventional wars. Primarily employing Russian sources, including important archival documents only recently declassified and made available to Western scholars, Dr. Baumann provides an insightful look at the Russian conquest of the Caucasian mountaineers (1801-59), the subjugation of Central Asia (1839-81), the reconquest of Central Asia by the Red Army (1918-33), and the Soviet war in Afghanistan (1979-89). The history of these wars—especially as it relates to the battle tactics, force structure, and strategy employed in them—offers important new perspectives on elements of continuity and change in combat over two centuries. This is the first study to provide an in-depth examination of the evolution of the Russian and Soviet unconventional experience on the predominantly Muslim southern periphery of the former empire. There, the Russians encountered fierce resistance by peoples whose cultures and views of war differed sharply from their own. Consequently, this Leavenworth Paper addresses not only issues germane to combat but to a wide spectrum of civic and propaganda operations as well.

Book Soviet Relations With South East

Download or read book Soviet Relations With South East written by Longmire and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gorbachev’s major speech at Vladivostok on 28 July 1986 signalled an increased awareness by the Soviet Union of the importance of the Asia-Pacific region. Subsequently there have been significant changes in Soviet foreign policy, paralleling the programme of wide-ranging internal reform and imparting a new look to the USSR’s international image. The aim of the present work is to chart the development of Soviet policy towards the region since the start of the Bolshevik regime, with whether there was any pattern or consistency in that policy. Concentration on Soviet activity in a particular part of the world might also serve to throw further light on the much discussed question whether Moscow’s policies have in the past been conceived in ideological terms (and therefore in some measure pre-determined) or whether they were truly ad hoc, ideology being used merely as justification.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Robertson provides a comprehensive analysis of a vital but often neglected contemporary relationship, and suggests that portrayals of basic Soviet-Japanese antipathy may be overplayed, largely as a result of excessive concentration upon a few specific past episodes.

Book The Defense Of The West

Download or read book The Defense Of The West written by Robert Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on their daily involvement with defense issues and their interactions with the military and political elements of the national security community, civilian and military defense analysts in the U.S. Army War Colleger Strategic Studies Institute offer a lucid analysis of the complex mosaic of strategic and European defense issues. Their contributions are probing, balanced, and provocative, designed for students of foreign and defense affairs, as well as for policymakers. In the first section of the book, the offensive and defensive aspects of the strategic balance between the United States and the Soviet Union are examined. Going beyond sterile, static weapons counts, the authors address the relationship between the overall disposition of military forces and deterrence and are attentive to possible future developments, including the impact of new technologies and changing Sino-Soviet relations that are likely to affect the U.S.-USSR relationship. The second section of the book focuses on crucial East-West defense issues within Europe: the balance of conventional and theater nuclear forces, prospects for European arms control, the impact of chemical weapons on deterrence and defense, and the fashioning of an effective nonnuclear NATO defense. The book concludes with a chapter that illuminates U.S.-West European historical and cultural divergences, explaining in a new way the political strains that frequently plague the alliance.
