Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the Physics 2010 decadal survey project, the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation requested that the National Research Council assess the opportunities, over roughly the next decade, in atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) science and technology. In particular, the National Research Council was asked to cover the state of AMO science, emphasizing recent accomplishments and identifying new and compelling scientific questions. Controlling the Quantum World, discusses both the roles and challenges for AMO science in instrumentation; scientific research near absolute zero; development of extremely intense x-ray and laser sources; exploration and control of molecular processes; photonics at the nanoscale level; and development of quantum information technology. This book also offers an assessment of and recommendations about critical issues concerning maintaining U.S. leadership in AMO science and technology.

Book Gas Phase Chemical Reaction Systems

Download or read book Gas Phase Chemical Reaction Systems written by Jürgen Wolfrum and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of edited papers presented at the International Symposion Gas Phase Chemical Reaction Systems: Experiments and Models 100 Years After Max Bodenslein, held at the Internationales Wissenschaftsforum Heidelberg (IWH) in Heidelberg during July 25-28, 1995. The intention of this symposion was to bring together leading researchers from the fields of reaction dynamics, kinetics, catalysis and reactive flow model ling to discuss and review the advances in the understanding of chemical kinetics about 100 years after Max Bodenstein's pioneering work on the "hydrogen iodine reaction", which he carried out at the Chemistry Institute of the University of Heidelberg. The idea to focus in his doctoral thesis [1] on this reaction was brought up by his supervisor Victor Meyer (successor of Robert Bunsen at the Chemistry Institute of the University of Heidelberg) and originated from the non reproducible behaviour found by Bunsen and Roscoe in their early photochemical investigations of the H2/Cl2 system [2] and by van't Hoff [3], and V. Meyer and co-workers [4] in their experiments on the slow combustion of H2/02 mixtures.

Book Spectroscopy Reaction and Photodissociation in Highly Vibrationally Excited Molecules

Download or read book Spectroscopy Reaction and Photodissociation in Highly Vibrationally Excited Molecules written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highly vibrationally excited molecules often control the course of chemical reactions in the atmosphere, combustion, plasmas, and many other environments. The research described in this Progress Report uses laser excitation and interrogation techniques to study and control the dynamics of highly vibrationally excited molecules. In particular, they show that it is possible to unravel the details and influence the course of photodissociation and bimolecular reaction. The experiments use laser excitation of overtone vibrations to prepare highly vibrationally excited molecules, frequently with single quantum state resolution, and laser spectroscopy to monitor the subsequent behavior of the excited molecule. We have studied the vibrationally mediated photodissociation and the bond- and state-selected bimolecular reaction of highly vibrationally excited molecules. In the first process, one photon creates a highly excited molecule, a second photon from another laser dissociates it, and light from a third laser detects the population of individual product quantum states. This approach allows us to explore otherwise inaccessible regions of the ground and excited state potential energy surface and, by exciting to the proper regions of the surface, to control the breaking of a selected chemical bond. In the second process, the highly vibrationally excited molecule reacts with an atom formed either in a microwave discharge or by photolysis and another laser interrogates the products. We have used this approach to demonstrate mode- and bond-selected bimolecular reactions in which the initial excitation controls the subsequent chemistry. 30 refs., 8 figs.

Book Time resolved Mechanisms of Organic Reactions Methodology and Applications

Download or read book Time resolved Mechanisms of Organic Reactions Methodology and Applications written by Zhongyue Yang and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the study of time-resolved mechanism of organic reactions with molecular reaction dynamics simulations. Gas-phase trajectory simulations were performed on (1) dimethyldioxirane C-H oxidation, which show how polar acetone solvation favors diradical recombination, leading to the retention of stereospecificity; (2) dehydro-Diels-Alder reactions, which reveal intrinsic dynamic features for concerted and stepwise pathways, where concerted pathway involves a vibrational excitation, while stepwise pathway involves a rotational excitation; (3) cyclopentadiene dimerization, in which two-stage pathway, as originally proposed by Woodward and Katz, is involved in 13% of the reactive trajectories, presenting a typical "dynamically stepwise" feature with time gap between formation of two bonds longer than 60 fs; and (4) sixteen reactions with potential energy surface bifurcation, where a linear correlation was found between TS bond lengths and the product ratio, serving as an empirical model to assist the discovery of new bifurcating reactions, and estimate product ratio without the expense of MD simulations. The thesis reports the development of a new computational method, environment-perturbed transition state sampling, (EPTSS) to enable the study of reaction dynamics in solvent and in enzyme. EPTSS integrates the conformational sampling of solvent/enzyme and quasi-classical sampling of reacting molecules, which was inspired by Truhlar and Gao's ensemble-average variational transition state theory. The method has been applied to (1) water-accelerated Diels-Alder reaction, which shows how water molecules dynamically participate the reaction and forms enhanced hydrogen bonds; (2) phosphoric acid-catalyzed allylboration reactions, in which an intrinsic synergy of enhancement between the CHi i i O and OHi i i O hydrogen bonds were observed, and the enhancement is diminished in toluene solvent; and (3) SpnF-catalyzed Diels-Alder reaction, which first demonstrates how enzyme dynamically control the product ratio of bifurcating reactions.
