Book Using Male Research and Extension Personnel to Target Women Farmers

Download or read book Using Male Research and Extension Personnel to Target Women Farmers written by Anita Spring and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farming systems research and extension (FSR/E) methodology has several phases (pre-diagnostic, diagnostic, technology design, testing, and dissemination) that should include information about the sexual division of labor, resource allocation, income generation, and knowledge of farming practices; yet gender is often left out of FSR/E by both researchers and extensionists. FSR/E practitioners usually rely on extensionists to locate, interview, and select trial cooperators. The extension staff members, who tend to be predominantly men, target male farmers for these and other extension activities. Therefore, there are very few women extensionists -- women who are not trained, who are concentrated in the lower ranks, and who tend to be assigned to home economics rather than to agricultural programs. A case study from Malawi shows that it was uncommon for women to be included in FSR/E work as trial farmers or in recommendation domains. The Women in Agricultural Development Project conducted diagnostic surveys and trials that included women. It found that women could carry out trials, that they had specific problems that needed attention, that in one situation women tended to be low-resource farmers and fell into a separate recommendation domain from high-resource farmers and fell into a separate recommendation domain from high-resource male farmers, and that male researchers and extensionists could work with women farmers. Subsequently, an extension circular (Appendix A) was prepared that legitimized male extensionists' work with women farmers and suggested techniques for their doing so. Female extensionists also were encouraged to have more agricultural training and to work with women on agricultural topics.

Book Gender and Agricultural Development

Download or read book Gender and Agricultural Development written by Helen Kreider Henderson and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural planning and development are crucial to human survival, but they usually proceed without any consideration of the importance of gender issues at the production level. Although women have long been prime movers in agriculture, their contribution to the world's food supply has been largely ignored, and consequently their stake in development has been undermined. This book is both a resource guide and a review of major issues in gender and agriculture which demonstrates that recognizing the contribution of women to agricultural production is a necessary step in development planning. It presents relevant information and research literature regarding women's roles in agriculture in a consolidated and accessible format, offering insights into how the inclusion or exclusion of appropriate information at the planning stage can have an impact during implementation. It also provides guidelines for locating information on gender-related agricultural issues and incorporating it into development planning, research, and training. The literature reviewed not only calls attention to the work women do in order to improve their access to technology and training but also challenges existing development paradigms. The issues discussed present women's experiences and local knowledge and allude to gender and class inequities that farming women face. Each chapter is intended to help the reader address major gender issues in a specific subject in order to access relevant information and thereby better design and implement appropriate agricultural planning and policies. By synthesizing twenty years of international research, Gender and Agricultural Development provides an effective tool for development practitioners to use in training programs or surveys in order to ensure the appropriate collection of gender disaggregated data and for educators to integrate gender issues into courses dealing with social aspects of agricultural systems. Its findings are presented in such a way as to allow them to be easily incorporated into innovative planning for more sustainable and equitable agricultural policies.

Book Challenges and opportunities in implementing video based extension approaches targeting women farmers An implementer s perspective

Download or read book Challenges and opportunities in implementing video based extension approaches targeting women farmers An implementer s perspective written by Rwamigisa, Patience B. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2024-01-16 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural extension services play an important role in agricultural development. Timely and reliable information services are key to improving farmers’ knowledge of strategies to increase agricultural productivity, assisting them in accessing inputs and credit, providing early warning against pests and other shocks, and offering them critical advice on climate action. However, equitable access to knowledge, information, and technology remains challeng ing in most countries. This inequity is even more pronounced among farmers from marginalized groups, including women farmers, resulting in their limited access to climate resilience-enhancing technologies and practices. This note summarizes findings from implementers of participatory video-based extension interventions in India, Kenya, and Uganda. The findings suggest that videos targeting women farmers can reach them effectively. Still, participa tory video-based extension should be accompanied by group discussions, providing complementary inputs, and dismantling other barriers that impede women’s agency and achievements in agriculture.

Book Women s empowerment agricultural extension and digitalization Disentangling information and role model effects in rural Uganda

Download or read book Women s empowerment agricultural extension and digitalization Disentangling information and role model effects in rural Uganda written by Lecoutere, Els and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women often have less access to agricultural information than men, constraining their participation in decision-making on crops, technologies, and practices. In the design of agricultural extension programs, women may be viewed as insignificant actors in agricultural production. Moreover, even if their role is recognized, valuable information on production does not flow freely within the household from men to women. Among groups of maize-farming households in eastern Uganda, we explore the impacts on women’s empowerment from the use of gender-responsive information and communication technologies to provide extension services, specifically videos that feature women as information providers. The research tests the relative impact of the videos, contrasting their informational effects versus their role model effects, on women’s knowledge, their agency, and their achievements in farming. The results show that targeting women with information increases their achievements in farming. However, the results for the role-model effects are mixed.

Book Changing Land Management

Download or read book Changing Land Management written by David Pannell and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a rich and extensive history of research into factors that encourage farmers to change their land management practices, or inhibit them from doing so. Yet this research is often under-utilised in practice. Changing Land Management provides key insights from past and cutting-edge research to support decision-makers as they attempt to influence or assist rural communities adapting to changed circumstances, such as new technologies, new environmental imperatives, new market opportunities or changed climate. Understanding the process of practice change by rural landholders is crucial for policy makers, agricultural researchers, extension agents, natural resource management bodies, non-government organisations and agricultural consultants. For example, such understanding can assist with the design and implementation of environmental programs, with the prioritisation of agricultural research and with commercial ventures. Common themes are the need for an appreciation of the diversity of land managers and their contexts, of the diversity of factors that influence land-management decisions, and of the challenges that face government programs that are intended to change land management.
