Book Using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry for the Detection of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Nitropolycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Soil and Diesel Particulate Matter

Download or read book Using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry for the Detection of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Nitropolycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Soil and Diesel Particulate Matter written by Mario J. Mena (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particular matter (PM, e.g. soot, dust etc.) of a certain size is known to be hazardous to human health. These particles are small enough to travel through our respiratory system and induce respiratory illness by introducing foreign bodies and toxic chemicals to our systems. For instance, benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), is an example of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) frequently found in or on PM known to have carcinogenic and mutagenic effects. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are by-products of incomplete combustion such as vehicle emissions. Thus, when PM are airborne, they can interact with semi-volatile molecules such as PAH. In turn, the newly coupled system may penetrate our respiratory system. In addition to PAH, nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs, i.e. 1-nitro-pyrene) are being recognized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a Group 2a compound (probably carcinogenic to humans). This study aims to identify chemical signatures of forest fire and automobile emissions using ratios of PAH and its oxidants, including nitro-PAH, in a variety of media (e.g. soil, soot, PM). Nitro-PAH (NPAHs) are usually found in/on course/fine particular matter at concentrations on the order of 2ng/mL to 200ng/mL (Heidelore et al. 1991, Eiguren-Fernandez et al 2004). Therefore, a very sensitive technique is needed to detect NPAHs in various matrices representative of those found in the environment. This study will use the following PAH ratios to differentiate sources of incomplete combustion: B[a]P to (B[a]P+chrysene; pyrene to B[a]P; fluoranthrene to pyrene; and fluoranthrene to (fluoranthrene+pyrene). As for the NPAH:PAH ratios, the following will be used: 1-nitro-pyrene to pyrene; 6-nitro-chyresene to chrysene; and 6-nitro-benzo[a]pyrene to benzo[a]pyrene. Extractions of PAH will be performed using the accelerated solvent extraction technique. Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy will be used to identify and quantify analytes. The results of this study may be used to inform citizens, city planners and lawmakers about the impacts of high-traffic events on human health.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Environmental Health Criteria Programme (EHC) evaluates information on the relationship between exposure to environmental pollutants and human health, in order to establish guidelines for setting exposure limits. This publication focuses on the risks posed by exposures to selected nitro-and nitro-oxy-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitroPAHs). These are derivaties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHS) which contain two or more fused aromatic rings made of carbon and hydrogen atoms.

Book Bitumens and Bitumen Emissions and Some N and S heterocyclic Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Download or read book Bitumens and Bitumen Emissions and Some N and S heterocyclic Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons written by IARC Working Group on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2013 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the IARC Monographs provides evaluations of the carcinogenicity of bitumens and their emissions, the N-heterocyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons benz[a]acridine, benz[c]acridine, dibenz[a,h]acridine, dibenz[a,j]acridine, dibenz[c,h]acridine, carbazole and 7H-dibenzo[c,g]carbazole, as well as the S-hetrocyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons benzo[b]naphtho[2,1-d]thiophene and dibenzothiophene. Bitumens are produced by distillation of crude oil during petroleum refining, and also occur naturally. Bitumens can be divided into six broad classes, according to their physical properties and specifications required for different applications. The major use (about 80%) of bitumens is for road paving; other uses include roofing, waterproofing, sealing and painting. The term "bitumen" should not be confused with "asphalt", which refers to the mixture of bitumen (4-10% by weight), small stones, sand and filler used for road paving. Bitumens are complex mixtures that contain a large number of organic chemical compounds. Application of bitumens may generate emissions (fumes and vapours) that may contain, among volatile and non-volatile compounds, a number of known or probable carcinogens. An IARC Monographs Working Group reviewed epidemiological evidence, animal bioassays, and mechanistic and other relevant data to reach conclusions as to the carcinogenic hazard to humans of various occupations that entail exposure to bitumens and bitumen emissions, including road paving, roofing, and application of mastic asphalt, and to various heterocyclic polycyclic aromatic compounds.

Book Mass Spectrometry of Priority Pollutants

Download or read book Mass Spectrometry of Priority Pollutants written by Brian Middleditch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the list of organic priority pollutants was first published, many mass spec troscopists went scrambling to their reference books. GC-MS was mandated for the analysis of 114 compounds, yet the spectra of many of them, if they had been recorded at all, were scattered throughout the literature. Moreover, it soon became apparent that, even if a sufficient number of instruments could be made available to undertake the task of monitoring 114 substances in the effluents of 21 categories of industry, the personnel could not be trained to perform the analyses and interpret the results. The solution to this problem has been the development of highly automated mass spectrometers which can be operated by personnel without the traditional research training. This book is for the new breed of mass spectroscopist who is not interested in the esoteric details of mass spectral fragmentation, but who merely wishes to identify specific pollutants in effluents. Our inclusion of com prehensive lists of synonyms and bibliographic data should make the book of even greater value to the reader who is not too familiar with the idiosyncrasies of chemical nomenclature and the scientific literature. The experienced mass spectroscopist should also benefit from having all of the data collected together in one volume. This is a book to be used, rather than deposited in a library distant from the laboratory: we would hope that it will fmd a place on top of every mass spectrometer used for the analysis of priority pollutants.
