Download or read book Hacking Chinese written by Olle Linge and published by . This book was released on 2016-03-26 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning Chinese can be frustrating and difficult, partly because it's very different from European languages. Following a teacher, textbook or language course is not enough. They show you the characters, words and grammar you need to become proficient in Chinese, but they don't teach you how to learn them! Regardless of what program you're in (if any), you need to take responsibility for your own learning. If you don't, you will miss many important things that aren't included in the course you're taking. If you study on your own, you need to be even more aware of what you need to do, what you're doing at the moment and the difference between them. Here are some of the questions I have asked and have since been asked many times by students: How do I learn characters efficiently? How do I get the most out of my course or teacher? Which are the best learning tools and resources? How can I become fluent in Mandarin? How can I improve my pronunciation? How do I learn successfully on my own? How can I motivate myself to study more? How can I fit learning Chinese into a busy schedule? The answers I've found to these questions and many others form the core of this book. It took eight years of learning, researching, teaching and writing to figure these things out. Not everybody has the time to do that! I can't go back in time and help myself learn in a better way, but I can help you! This book is meant for normal students and independent language learners alike. While it covers all major areas of learning, you won't learn Chinese just by reading this book. It's like when someone on TV teaches you how to cook: you won't get to eat the delicious dish just by watching the program; you have to do the cooking yourself. That's true for this book as well. When you apply what you learn, it will boost your learning, making every hour you spend count for more, but you still have to do the learning yourself. This is what a few readers have said about the book: "The book had me nodding at a heap of things I'd learnt the hard way, wishing I knew them when I started, as well as highlighting areas that I'm currently missing in my study." - Geoff van der Meer, VP engineering "This publication is like a bible for anyone serious about Chinese proficiency. It's easy for anyone to read and written with scientific precision." - Zachary Danz, foreign teacher, children's theatre artist About me I started learning Chinese when I was 23 (that's more than eight years ago now) and have since studied in many different situations, including serious immersion programs abroad, high-intensity programs in Sweden, online courses, as well as on the side while working or studying other things. I have also successfully used my Chinese in a graduate program for teaching Chinese as a second language, taught entirely in Chinese mostly for native speakers (the Graduate Institute for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at National Taiwan Normal University). All these parts have contributed to my website, Hacking Chinese, where I write regularly about how to learn Mandarin.

Book Common Chinese Words That Are Often Confused

Download or read book Common Chinese Words That Are Often Confused written by Ping Makarsky and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-02-20 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Similarly to any language, there are many synonyms and near synonyms in Chinese. Synonyms are words that are same in meaning. Near synonyms are words that are close or similar in meaning but not the same meaning. Synonym and near synonym are different concepts. It is very important to get a clear understanding of this basic concept. Even if the two words are synonyms, in some sentences they are not interchangeable. There are many Chinese synonyms and near synonyms that, when translated into English, there are not much differences, but when they are used in Chinese sentences, the differences are obvious, and vice versa. Some Chinese synonyms and near synonyms are interchangeable while some are not. When they are not interchangeable, they are either not properly used according to codes of Chinese language or different in meaning from the original sentence. If you can master the most important and often misused Chinese synonym and near synonym you will be ahead of most Chinese learners. This book explains about 200 commonly used Chinese words, including synonyms and near synonyms often misused. Each word was provided with detailed examples and explanations, including English translation for some examples. This book also includes lots of exercises and answers. Learners can master the difficult grammar point—Chinese synonyms and near synonyms in a short time, thus improving their Chinese ability. This book is suitable as a good reference or textbook for basic and middle level Chinese learners.

Book Using Japanese Synonyms

Download or read book Using Japanese Synonyms written by A. E. Backhouse and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a successful speaker of a given language involves control of the meaning and use of vocabulary items, taking in their lexical content (what phenomena they refer to), combinatorial behaviour (what items they occur with) and situational characteristics (e.g. as colloquial or formal terms). This essential reference book provides clear information on these aspects for around three hundred groups of Japanese near-synonyms, supplemented by a wide range of authentic examples. The result is a clear profile of the meaning and use of each item, highlighting similarities and distinctions among neighbouring terms and expanding learners' lexical range. The book is designed primarily for English-speaking learners, and the selection of groups and items and the overall treatment adopted reflects the author's extensive experience in teaching Japanese to English speakers. Japanese forms and examples appear in both romanisation and Japanese orthography, and the bilingual indexes allow readers to locate synonyms quickly and easily.

Book Chinese English Mini Dictionary

Download or read book Chinese English Mini Dictionary written by Taebum Kim and published by Core Voca. This book was released on 2018-04-11 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book lists approximately 4,800 core Chinese words with English equivalents including standard American pronunciation. Main entries are in Pinyin (Romanized standard Chinese pronunciation) alphabetically with Chinese characters (both simplified and traditional if applicable). In the next line, pasts of speech label ([n.] for nouns and [v.] for verbs) and the entry’s English equivalents followed by standard American pronunciation with focus on stressed syllable*in bold print. A syllable is part of a word that contains one vowel sound. In every word of two or more syllables, one syllable is stressed. It’s called ‘stressed syllable’. The vowel sound in that syllable is louder, higher in pitch, and longer than the other vowel sounds in the same word. The contrast between stressed and unstressed syllables is very important because it helps to create the rhythm of English. The native English speakers rely more on stressed syllable to understand what you say than on the individual sounds of the word. This book is ideal for learners of English as a second language who want to communicate more effectively and also for learners of Chinese who know English. * Please refer to the website for more information. www.corevoca.com
