Book Using a MG M Imagery Intervention to Enhance the Sport Competence of Young Special Olympics Athletes

Download or read book Using a MG M Imagery Intervention to Enhance the Sport Competence of Young Special Olympics Athletes written by Kelley Catenacci and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The opportunity for athletes with an intellectual disability (ID) to participate in sport is limited due to physical, social, and psychological barriers (Shields, Synnot, & Barr, 2012). Sport psychology interventions may have the capacity to address these barriers, namely the lack of sport competence that athletes with an ID tend to experience (Vealey, Hayashi, Garner-Holman, & Giacobbi, 1998). Therefore, this single subject A-B-A design sought to enhance sport competence among athletes with an ID using personalized motivational general-mastery (MG-M) imagery scripts. The study spanned six weeks and was implemented with five Special Olympics athletes (Mage = 11.40) who had ID's including autism, mild intellectual disability, and moderate intellectual disability. The Sport Imagery Questionnaire for Children (SIQ-C), the Movement Imagery Questionnaire-Revised (MIQ-R), and the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Young Children assessed athletes' imagery use, imagery ability, and sport competence level, respectively. Results demonstrated improvements in sport competence from baseline through intervention for three out of five participants, and these changes were maintained in the return to baseline phase for two of those three participants. Changes in mean and variability were also evaluated using effect sizes, and suggested that scores became more stable during the intervention phase for three out of five participants. Implications of the current study include emphasizing the importance and feasibility of conducting research with this special population of athletes. Additionally, this study identifies the relevant modifications for mental skills training with individuals who have an ID. In particular, results suggest that imagery use and ability, as well as sport competence, can be improved with individualized training among athletes with an ID.

Book Using a Motivational General mastery Imagery Intervention to Improve the Self efficacy of Youth Gymnasts

Download or read book Using a Motivational General mastery Imagery Intervention to Improve the Self efficacy of Youth Gymnasts written by Emily Parkerson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Context: Self-efficacy plays a significant role in influencing sport performance (Moritz, et al., 2000) and has been shown to be a stronger predictor of sport performance compared to anxiety, perceived control, and one's personal goals (Feltz & Lirg, 2001). The use of motivational general-mastery (MG-M) imagery has been shown to increase self-efficacy among athletic populations (O, et al., 2014); however, there is a paucity of research regarding the influence of imagery, particularly individualized MG-M imagery, on the self-efficacy of youth athletes specifically. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of an individualized MG-M imagery intervention on the self-efficacy and MG-M imagery use of youth gymnasts (Mage = 10.40). A single-subject, ABA design spanning seven total weeks was employed with five youth gymnasts who competed at a level six or above, as sanctioned by USA Gymnastics, and who had at least one year of competitive experience. Participants received individualized MG-M imagery scripts and engaged in guided imagery sessions along with independent imagery practice. Measures assessed athletes' MG-M imagery use, imagery ability, and self-efficacy specific to training. Visual inspection of the graphed data indicated improvements in self-efficacy from baseline through the intervention for one of the five participants. Effect sizes were also used to evaluate the magnitude of changes in mean and variability among phases. Both self-efficacy and imagery use scores decreased in variability, evidencing more stability from baseline to the intervention phase for two out of the five participants for self-efficacy and four of the five participants for imagery use. Implications from this study provide direction for practitioners and researchers regarding the development and implementation of MG-M imagery interventions in order to increase youth athletes' selfefficacy and imagery use.

Book Imagery in Sport

Download or read book Imagery in Sport written by Tony Morris and published by Human Kinetics. This book was released on 2005 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been known that almost all elite athletes use imagery and that most sport psychologists apply imagery in working with athletes. But most material on the subject has been, to this point, relegated to single chapters in books, to journal articles, or to conference proceedings. Now Imagery in Sport addresses the breadth of what researchers and practitioners in sport psychology know about the topic, and it treats each issue in depth, considering current theories and research on imagery and its application in sport. The reference also addresses future directions in research and practice for imagery in sport. In doing so, Imagery in Sport provides the most comprehensive look at the state of imagery and its uses in sport today. The authors take readers step by step through understanding, investigating, applying, and advancing imagery in sport. The text includes the following: -Sample scripts, preperformance suggestions, and sport-specific and site-specific tips -Presentation and critical analysis of 10 well-known theoretical frameworks for understanding imagery -A full chapter devoted to understanding and successfully using the available measures of imagery in sport, including how to administer imagery-ability measures Imagery in Sport takes complex theories and presents them clearly, using examples from everyday sport contexts. The book helps readers become familiar with the current knowledge about the topic and learn to view it with a critical eye. And it provides practicing sport psychologists with guidelines and strategies for using imagery to help athletes improve their performances.

Book Improving Self efficacy and Imagery Ability with a Poly sensory Video and MG M Imagery Intervention Within Division 1 Female Soccer Players

Download or read book Improving Self efficacy and Imagery Ability with a Poly sensory Video and MG M Imagery Intervention Within Division 1 Female Soccer Players written by Ashleigh Carpentier and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Self-efficacy has been shown to be a significant predictor in an athlete's performance. Research has also suggested that imagery has been demonstrated to serve as a significant variable influencing self-efficacy within athlete samples. The addition of a poly-sensory video (PSV) is thought to potentially help with imagery ability as well through the incorporation of modeling and initiating thoughts of scenarios and tasks that the athlete is trying to image. It may also enhance vividness of the environment as well as utilize sources of self-efficacy. While studies have demonstrated improvements in self-efficacy through imagery little to none has looked at a PSV with the use of MG-M imagery as a complete intervention. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of a PSV that incorporated MG-M imagery in improving self-efficacy and imagery ability in NCAA Division I female soccer players. It was hypothesized that there would be an increase in both an athlete's self-efficacy and imagery ability over the course of the intervention compared to their baseline phase. It is also expected that after the intervention is withdrawn, there would be a change in participants' post-intervention baseline scores in relation to their original baseline results. The participants consisted of six NCAA, Division I female soccer players from a southeastern university. The results suggested that all six participants increased their mastery imagery ability during the intervention yet two participants scored dropped below the original baseline during the return to baseline. Self-efficacy in competition increased for four out of the six participants during the intervention and five out of the six had higher scores during the return to baseline than scored in the initial baseline. Examining self-efficacy in practice revealed five out of the six participants had higher scores in the intervention and only four out of the six had higher return to baseline scores that initial baseline scores. Results supported the notion that the use of a PSV with MG-M imagery as an intervention can potentially increase self-efficacy and imagery ability.

Book Special Olympics

Download or read book Special Olympics written by Florian Kiuppis and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together academic work on Special Olympics and specifically on the social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in various sport contexts and other areas of life, by ways of both empirical research and theoretically informed papers. Inclusion in sport is a topic that is mostly explored in connection with the participation of people with disabilities in general. In public debates on inclusion and sport in the global society, participation is predominantly discussed in a normative way, e.g., in connection with the campaign The Revolution is Inclusion by Special Olympics, describing it as an “all-out effort to end discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities”. With this international collection, the authors seek to contribute to an interdisciplinary understanding of Special Olympics in Context of Inclusion Debates and establish a foundation for future scholarship. The chapters in this book can contribute to a new research agenda on Special Olympics, particularly participatory approaches. The chapters in this book were originally published in Sport in Society.

Book The Mediation of Affect on Imagery Use and Self efficacy in Collegiate Athletes

Download or read book The Mediation of Affect on Imagery Use and Self efficacy in Collegiate Athletes written by Michelle Wirbiezcas and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: In the sports domain, research has become an essential part of how we understand the psychological factors that play a key role in maximizing performance. Previous research has suggested that an individual’s performance can be highly influenced by the psychological variable of self-efficacy (e.g., Bandura, 1997; Calmels & Fournier, 2001). Self-efficacy has been used to describe individuals’ perceived capability of achieving a certain level of performance in the domain of sport (Feltz, 1998). Previous research has also demonstrated that the tendency of athletes to interpret their imagery as either facilitative or debilitative affects specific constructs known to enhance or impede sport performance (Nordin & Cumming, 2005; Quinton et al., 2016; Short et al., 2002). As a result, this study aimed to evaluate imagery more broadly by including different types of involuntary imagery (i.e. spontaneous, intrusive). Affective states of individuals when performing an activity is one of the most important variables for determining general self-efficacy (Bandura, 1994). The relationship between self-efficacy and MG-M imagery has also been closely examined, which suggests that the use of MG-M imagery is beneficial for increasing athletes’ self-efficacy levels (Martin et al., 1999; Moritz at al., 1996). The purpose of the present study was to examine the predictive relationship between imagery use (i.e., MG-M, spontaneous, and intrusive) and self-efficacy with affect as the mediator in collegiate athletes. It was hypothesized that affect would significantly mediate the relationship between imagery use and self-efficacy in collegiate athletes. Results found that positive affect significantly mediates the relationship between MG-M imagery and self-efficacy. The present findings suggest that positive affect is an essential construct for how MG-M imagery use effects self-efficacy levels in collegiate athletes. The implementation of MG-M imagery-based interventions may be used as a way to effectively increase an athlete’s self-efficacy perceptions.

Book An Evaluation of the Fundamental Movement Skill Proficiency of Children with Intellectual Disabilities Participating in the Special Olympics Young Athletes Programme

Download or read book An Evaluation of the Fundamental Movement Skill Proficiency of Children with Intellectual Disabilities Participating in the Special Olympics Young Athletes Programme written by Hayley Kavanagh and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental movement skills (FMS) are known as the building blocks required for participating in sport and physical activity. These skills encompass three categories of movement including locomotor, ball and balance skills. Children with ID (CwID) must be provided with opportunities to learn, practice and reinforce these skills. Throughout the literature, CwID exhibit lower motor skill proficiency levels compared to typically developing children (TDC). Phase one of this project involved completing a meta- analysis of studies comparing the FMS of CwID to TDC (n = 3525, age 4-12 years) in order to quantitatively obtain a macroscopic picture of the FMS proficiency of CwID in comparison with TDC. Phase two consisted of carrying out a nationwide assessment of a broad range of FMS amongst CwID (n = 100) and coaches' perceptions of CwID proficiency levels participating in the Special Olympics Young Athletes (YA) programme. The main results highlight that CwID demonstrate low levels of FMS mastery (0-60.4%) TDC scored significantly higher in all FMS subsets compared to CwID (p
