Book excerpt: [Truncated] Reservoir modeling is the practice of generating numerical representations of reservoir conditions and properties on the basis of geological, geophysical and engineering data measured on the Earth's surface or in depth at a limited number of borehole locations. Building an accurate reservoir model is a fundamental step of reservoir characterization and fluid flow performance forecasting, and has direct impact on reservoir management strategies, risk/uncertainty analyses and key business decisions. Seismic data, due to its high spatial resolution, plays a key role not only in defining the reservoir structure and geometry, but also in constraining the reservoir property variations. However, integration of 3D and time-lapse 4D seismic data into reservoir modeling and history matching processes poses a significant challenge due to the frequent mismatch between the initial reservoir model, the reservoir geology, and the pre-production seismic data. The key objective of this thesis is to investigate, develop and apply innovative solutions and methods to incorporate seismic data in the reservoir characterization and model building processes, and ultimately improve the consistency of the reservoir models with both geological and geophysical measurements. In this thesis we first analyze the issues that have a significant impact on the (mis)match of the initial reservoir model with well logs and 3D seismic data. These issues include the incorporation of various seismic constraints in reservoir property modeling, the sensitivity of the results to realistic noise in seismic data, and to geostatistical modeling parameters, and the uncertainties associated with quantitative integration of seismic data in reservoir property modeling. Inherent uncertainties and noise in real data measurements may result in conflicting geological and geophysical information for a given area; a realistic subsurface model can then only be produced by combining the datasets in some optimal manner. One approach to solving this problem is by joint inversion of the various geological and/or geophysical datasets. In this thesis we develop a new multi-objective optimization method to estimate subsurface geomodels using a stochastic search technique that allows a variety of direct and indirect measurements to simultaneously constrain the model. The main advantage of our method is its ability to define multiple objective functions for a variety of data types and constraints, and simultaneously minimize the data misfits. Using our optimization approach, the resulting models converge towards Pareto fronts (a set of best compromise model solutions). This approach is applicable in many Earth science disciplines: hydrology and ground water analyses, geothermal studies, exploration and recovery of fossil fuel energy resources, and CO2 geosequestration, among others.

The objective of the study includes building a sequential approach to identify different geological features and facies sequences within the strata, through visualizing the targeted formations by interpreting and correlating the regional geological data, 3D seismic, and well data by following a sequential workflow. First, seismic interpretation is performed targeting the Kapuni group formations, mainly, the Mangahewa C-sand and Kaimiro D-sand. Synthetic seismograms and well ties are conducted for structural maps, horizon slices, isopach, and velocity maps. Well log and morphological analyses are performed for formation sequence and petrophysics identification. Attribute analyses including RMS, dip, azimuth, and eigenstructure coherence are implemented to identify discontinuities, unconformities, lithology, and bright spots. Algorithmic analyses are conducted using Python programming to generate and overlay the attributes which are displayed in 3D view. Integrating all of the attributes in a single 3D view significantly strengthens the summation of the outputs and enhances seismic interpretation. The attribute measurements are utilized to characterize the subsurface structure and depositional system such as fluvial dominated channels, point bars, and nearshore sandstone. Book excerpt: The elastic properties (density and velocity) of organic shales are largely controlled by kerogen content, porosity, clay content, and e ective pressure. Since surface-seismic measurements can have a complicated dependence on rock properties, it is essential to understand the relationship between the elastic response and variations in rock properties to correctly assess the target reservoir. In this sense, a combination of rock-physics and seismic modeling is applied to relate variations in key properties, such as kerogen content and porosity, to di erences in the elastic response of a 3C-3D seismic volume in the Marcellus Shale (Bradford County, Pennsylvania). Well log analysis and rock physics modeling indicate that density is more sensitive to kerogen content than Vp/Vs or P impedance. Organic-rich intervals (kerogen content > 6 wt. %) are characterized by densities lower than 2.5 g/cc. Vp/Vs and P-impedance are more sensitive to variations in clay content than density; Vp/Vs values lower than 1.6 are attached to clay content lower than 25 %. The interplay between mineralogy and kerogen content causes an increase in velocity in the organic-rich interval, where the e ect of kerogen on the elastic moduli seems to be masked by a decrease in clay content and increase in quartz and calcite. Elastic AVA modeling shows that the sensitivity to the presence of the organic-rich facies increases with angle for both PP and PS (converted-wave) reflections. Additionally, the compressibility seems to be more sensitive to the organic-rich facies than the rigidity. A comparison between PP and PP-PS inversions show that the addition of PS data decreases the P-impedance, S-impedance and density estimation errors by 58, 80, and 17 %, respectively. We used this procedure to create 3D-density maps to indicate promising reservoir quality. These predictions suggest good reservoirs where two gas wells (not used in the analysis) are producing.

Book excerpt: Reservoir characterization as a discipline grew out of the recognition that more oil and gas could be extracted from reservoirs if the geology of the reservoir was understood. Prior to that awakening, reservoir development and production were the realm of the petroleum engineer. In fact, geologists of that time would have felt slighted if asked by corporate management to move from an exciting exploration assignment to a more mundane assignment working with an engineer to improve a reservoir’s performance. Slowly, reservoir characterization came into its own as a quantitative, multidisciplinary endeavor requiring a vast array of skills and knowledge sets. Perhaps the biggest attractor to becoming a reservoir geologist was the advent of fast computing, followed by visualization programs and theaters, all of which allow young geoscientists to practice their computing skills in a highly technical work environment. Also, the discipline grew in parallel with the evolution of data integration and the advent of asset teams in the petroleum industry. Finally, reservoir characterization flourished with the quantum improvements that have occurred in geophysical acquisition and processing techniques and that allow geophysicists to image internal reservoir complexities.
