Book Critical Mineral Resources of the United States

Download or read book Critical Mineral Resources of the United States written by K. J. Schulz and published by Geological Survey. This book was released on 2017 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the importance and dependence of specific mineral commodities increase, so does concern about their supply. The United States is currently 100 percent reliant on foreign sources for 20 mineral commodities and imports the majority of its supply of more than 50 mineral commodities. Mineral commodities that have important uses and face potential supply disruption are critical to American economic and national security. However, a mineral commodity's importance and the nature of its supply chain can change with time; a mineral commodity that may not have been considered critical 25 years ago may be critical today, and one considered critical today may not be so in the future. The U.S. Geological Survey has produced this volume to describe a select group of mineral commodities currently critical to our economy and security. For each mineral commodity covered, the authors provide a comprehensive look at (1) the commodity's use; (2) the geology and global distribution of the mineral deposit types that account for the present and possible future supply of the commodity; (3) the current status of production, reserves, and resources in the United States and globally; and (4) environmental considerations related to the commodity's production from different types of mineral deposits. The volume describes U.S. critical mineral resources in a global context, for no country can be self-sufficient for all its mineral commodity needs, and the United States will always rely on global mineral commodity supply chains. This volume provides the scientific understanding of critical mineral resources required for informed decisionmaking by those responsible for ensuring that the United States has a secure and sustainable supply of mineral commodities.

Book Statistical Methods in Water Resources

Download or read book Statistical Methods in Water Resources written by D.R. Helsel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1993-03-03 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data on water quality and other environmental issues are being collected at an ever-increasing rate. In the past, however, the techniques used by scientists to interpret this data have not progressed as quickly. This is a book of modern statistical methods for analysis of practical problems in water quality and water resources. The last fifteen years have seen major advances in the fields of exploratory data analysis (EDA) and robust statistical methods. The 'real-life' characteristics of environmental data tend to drive analysis towards the use of these methods. These advances are presented in a practical and relevant format. Alternate methods are compared, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each as applied to environmental data. Techniques for trend analysis and dealing with water below the detection limit are topics covered, which are of great interest to consultants in water-quality and hydrology, scientists in state, provincial and federal water resources, and geological survey agencies. The practising water resources scientist will find the worked examples using actual field data from case studies of environmental problems, of real value. Exercises at the end of each chapter enable the mechanics of the methodological process to be fully understood, with data sets included on diskette for easy use. The result is a book that is both up-to-date and immediately relevant to ongoing work in the environmental and water sciences.

Book Geoscience Data and Collections

Download or read book Geoscience Data and Collections written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-09-23 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geoscience data and collections (such as, rock and sediment cores, geophysical data, engineering records, and fossils) are necessary for industries to discover and develop domestic natural resources to fulfill the nation's energy and mineral requirements and to improve the prediction of immediate and long term hazards, such as land slides, volcanic eruptions and global climate change. While the nation has assembled a wealth of geoscience data and collections, their utility remains incompletely tapped. Many could act as invaluable resources in the future but immediate action is needed if they are to remain available. Housing of and access to geoscience data and collections have become critical issues for industry, federal and state agencies, museums, and universities. Many resources are in imminent danger of being lost through mismanagement, neglect, or disposal. A striking 46 percent of the state geological surveys polled by the committee reported that there is no space available or they have refused to accept new material. In order to address these challenges, Geoscience Data and Collections offers a comprehensive strategy for managing geoscience data and collections in the United States.

Book Reference Materials for Chemical Analysis

Download or read book Reference Materials for Chemical Analysis written by Markus Stoeppler and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-07-11 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many academic references describing how RMs are made, but few that explain why they are used, how they should be used and what happens when they are not properly used. In order to fill this gap, the editors have taken the contributions of more than thirty RM practitioners to produce a highly readable text organized in nine chapters. Starting with an introduction to historical, theoretical and technical requirements, the book goes on to examine all aspects of RM production from planning, preparation through analysis to certification, reviews recent development areas, RMs for life analysis and some important general application fields, considers the proper usage of RMs, gives advice on availability and sources of information and lastly looks at future trends and needs for RMs. This book is intended to be a single point of information that both guides the reader through the use of RMs and serves as a primary reference source. It should be on the reading list of anyone working in an analytical laboratory and be found on the library shelf of all analytical chemical laboratories.

Book U S Geological Survey Bulletin

Download or read book U S Geological Survey Bulletin written by Arthur Edward Nelson and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deformation Quadrangle, 1n the Stensgar Mountain Stevens County, Washington By James G. Evans Abstract Most deformation of the Middle and Late Proterozoic (Deer Trail and Windermere Groups) and Lower Cambrian (Addy Quartzite and Old Dominion Limestone) rocks in the Stensgar Mountain quadrangle occurred during the Mesozoic (pre-Late Jurassic, possibly Early Jurassic or Triassic), in con- nection with duplex thrusting. The principal deformation occurred in stages that generally involved: (1) thrusting, (2) penetrative dynamothermal metamorphism in the greenschist facies, and (3) renewed thrusting. The initial thrusting may have included formation of the duplex fault zone, moderate tilting of the sedimentary and volcanic rocks, and possibly low-grade metamorphism. The dynamothermal metamorphism resulted in development of a slaty cleavage that dips steeply west, as well as numerous minor and a few large folds that plunge at low to moderate angles, generally north. The folds have axial planes parallel to cleavage. Clasts in conglomerates were flattened parallel to cleavage, and their long axes were aligned north-northeastward, subparallel to fold axes. This extension direction parallels the trend of the Kootenay arc, a relation not typical of orogenic belts. The dynamothermal metamorphism included coaxial compressive pulses separated by periods of stress relaxation. The penetra- tive deformation could have been accompanied by slip on preexisting faults, including a large strike-slip component for the roof (Stensgar Mountain thrust) and floor (Lane Mountain thrust) thrusts of the duplex fault zone. Later movements along these roof and floor thrusts and connecting splays are suggested by nonfolded traces of the faults and the faulted, dynamothermally metamorphosed cataclasite adjacent to the Lane Mountain thrust. The penetrative deformation that affected the Stensgar Mountain quadrangle also affected the rest of northeastern Washington and southeastern British Columbia; it may have been the result of oblique convergence during Mesozoic subduction.
