Book Use Wear Analysis and Obsidian

Download or read book Use Wear Analysis and Obsidian written by Linda M. Hurcombe and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1992-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates a technique for the functional analysis of obsidian tools and a small archaeological case study: the lunates from the Bronze Age Sardinian site of Ortu Comidu is examined using the technique and approach. It reviews the current state of flint use wear studies and applies the theories generated there to obsidian. The experimental programme shows the potential success of the technique, which can allow the use action and use material to be interpreted, and demonstrates the limitations. Residues play an important role as they are more easily seen on obsidian than flint. The discussion includes an assessment of wear formation theories and the role of functional information within archaeology. The technique and approach is brought to bear on a small archaeologucal case study: the lunates from the Bronze Age Sardinian site of Ortu Comidu.

Book Use Wear and Residue Analysis in Archaeology

Download or read book Use Wear and Residue Analysis in Archaeology written by João Manuel Marreiros and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to act as a readily accessible guide to different methods and techniques of use-wear and residue analysis and therefore includes a wide range of different and complementary essential topics: experimental tests, observation and record methods and techniques and the interpretation of a diversity of tool types and worked raw materials. The onset of use-wear studies was marked by the development of theory, method and techniques in order to infer prehistoric tools functionality and, therefore, understand human technological, social and cultural behavior. The last decade of functional studies, use-wear and residue analysis have been aimed at the observation, recording and interpretation of different activities and worked materials found on archaeological tools made on different types of organic and non-organic materials. This international group of contributions will be fundamental for all researchers and students of the discipline.

Book An Experimental Approach and Use wear Analysis of an Obsidian Assemblage from the Coromandel New Zealand

Download or read book An Experimental Approach and Use wear Analysis of an Obsidian Assemblage from the Coromandel New Zealand written by Rose A. Young and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most studies of Māori socio-economy have claimed there was a major shift in the subsistence strategy, mobility degree and settlement pattern over time but have not been explicit in how these changes are visible in stone artefact assemblages. This thesis investigates how use-wear and a technological analysis of obsidian artefacts can be used as a proxy for detecting change or a lack of change in mobility degree and settlement systems at one site. A range of experiments were conducted to demonstrate how use-wear appears and to provide examples to compare with archaeological flakes. A sample of flakes from a Māori site in the Waitapu area, located on Great Mercury Island off the coast of the North Island, New Zealand was technologically analysed and examined for use-wear. The site has two periods of occupation and obsidian artefacts from both contexts were analysed to allow for a comparison. When compared, the results from the two temporal contexts show there was no significant difference in the average extent of use-wear nor the proportion of used artefacts. Flake selection is indicated with used flakes significantly larger than those that lack use-wear. The results from this thesis are not able to support the suggestions of substantial shifts in Māori socio-economy in the Waitapu area and so provides an example for future use-wear studies in New Zealand.

Book Use wear Experiments with Sardinian Obsidian

Download or read book Use wear Experiments with Sardinian Obsidian written by Teddi J. Setzer and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study focuses on identifying the function of obsidian tools from the Late Neolithic archaeological site of Contraguda on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. The information obtained from use-wear analysis can provide information about changes in subsistence patterns, craft specialization, social differentiation and technology. This research began by collecting geological samples of obsidian from two of the most exploited sources in the Monte Arci volcanic complex of Sardinia. Subsequently, an experimental set of tools was made from these samples, and they were used to work various raw materials that were presumably available in Sardinia during the Neolithic. Wear patterns were studied on the experimental set utilizing macroscopic and low-power microscopy techniques and were compared to the wear on artifacts excavated from the site of Contraguda.

Book Defining and Measuring Diversity in Archaeology

Download or read book Defining and Measuring Diversity in Archaeology written by Metin I. Eren and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2022-07-18 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculating the diversity of biological or cultural classes is a fundamental way of describing, analyzing, and understanding the world around us. Understanding archaeological diversity is key to understanding human culture in the past. Archaeologists have long experienced a tenuous relationship with statistics; however, the regular integration of diversity measures and concepts into archaeological practice is becoming increasingly important. This volume includes chapters that cover a wide range of archaeological applications of diversity measures. Featuring studies of archaeological diversity ranging from the data-driven to the theoretical, from the Paleolithic to the Historic periods, authors illustrate the range of data sets to which diversity measures can be applied, as well as offer new methods to examine archaeological diversity.
