Book Use of Solid state Seebeck Measurement as a Diagnostic Technique for the Study of Solidification of Bi 1atom Sn Alloy

Download or read book Use of Solid state Seebeck Measurement as a Diagnostic Technique for the Study of Solidification of Bi 1atom Sn Alloy written by Yunfei Lian and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This work on modeling of the structural Seebeck of Bi-Sn alloy is part of the NASA-MEPHISTO research program for the unidirectional solidification behavior of faceted Bi-1%Sn alloy grown under microgravity conditions. For the space experiments, Seebeck technique was used to measure the interface temperature from the Seebeck voltage generated across two solid-liquid interfaces during solidification. However, the total Seebeck voltage measured represents three components of kinetic, compositional and structural Seebeck voltage. A series of experiments were thus conducted to measure the structural Seebeck voltage generated by the sample solidified in space. Numerical simulations are used to determine the structural Seebeck coefficient. For planar growth at low velocities, the Seebeck coefficients were found to be -0.055 mv/K, and the Seebeck coefficients vary from -0.03 mv/K to -0.01 mv/K with the increase in the growth rate and formation of cellular structure. The finer the cell spacings are in the sample, the smaller the absolute value of the Seebeck coefficient. These structural Seebeck coefficients were then used to determine the structural Seebeck voltage generated behind the interface during the solidification in the space experiments. The results show that the structural Seebeck contributes greatly to the overall voltage measured during solidification. The results were finally used to obtain an estimate for the kinetic undercooling for the Bi-Sn binary alloy during unidirectional solidification.

Book Electronic Materials

Download or read book Electronic Materials written by James R. Chelikowsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modem materials science is exploiting novel tools of solid-state physics and chemistry to obtain an unprecedented understanding of the structure of matter at the atomic level. The direct outcome of this understanding is the ability to design and fabricate new materials whose properties are tailored to a given device ap plication. Although applications of materials science can range from low weight, high strength composites for the automobile and aviation industry to biocompat ible polymers, in no other field has progress been more strikingly rapid than in that of electronic materials. In this area, it is now possible to predict from first principles the properties of hypothetical materials and to construct artificially structured materials with layer-by-Iayer control of composition and microstruc ture. The resulting superlattices, multiple quantum wells, and high temperature superconductors, among others, will dominate our technological future. A large fraction of the current undergraduate and graduate students in science and engi neering will be directly involved in furthering the revolution in electronic mate rials. With this book, we want to welcome such students to electronic materials research and provide them with an introduction to this exciting and rapidly de veloping area of study. A second purpose of this volume is to provide experts in other fields of solid state physics and chemistry with an overview of contemporary research within the field of electronic materials.
