Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1955 and 1987, the United States Coast Guard Cutter Glacier was the largest and most powerful icebreaker in the free world. Consequently, it was often given the most difficult and dangerous Antarctic missions. This is the dramatic first-person account of its most legendary voyage. In 1970, the author was the Chief Medical Officer on the Glacier when it became trapped deep in the Weddell Sea, pressured by 100 miles of wind-blown icepack. Glacier was beset within seventy miles of where Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance, was imprisoned in 1915. His stout wooden ship succumbed to the crushing pressure of the infamous Weddell Sea pack ice and sank, leading to an unbelievable two-year saga of hardship, heroism and survival. The sailors aboard the Glacier feared they would suffer Shackleton’s fate, or one even worse. Freakishly good luck eventually saved the Glacier from destruction in the crushing ice pack, only to experience a three-hour fire that nearly killed one of the crew, followed by eighty foot waves that came close to capsizing the ship. Wind, Fire, and Ice is a story about a physician who starts out with a set of false assumptions—namely that he is going have an easy assignment and see numerous exotic ports, but then slowly comes to realize a much different hard reality.

Book Western Ross Sea and McMurdo Sound Ice Forecasting Guide

Download or read book Western Ross Sea and McMurdo Sound Ice Forecasting Guide written by R. J. Perchal and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Procedures for preparing short-range (48-hour) forecasts and long-range (15- and 30-day) estimates of austral summer sea ice conditions in the western Ross Sea and McMurdo Sound are given. Magnitude and direction of short-period ice drift are related to pack concentration, topography, and thickness, surface currents, and forecasted surface wind velocities. Long-period ice estimates are based on analog techniques relating various environmental factors to pack growth, extent, and disintegration as well as using the progression of ice melt indicated by selected historical data. Examples of short-range ice forecasts and long-range estimates are given. Techniques are included for interpreting sea ice from satellite imagery.

Book Geology and Seismic Stratigraphy of the Antarctic Margin

Download or read book Geology and Seismic Stratigraphy of the Antarctic Margin written by Alan K. Cooper and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1997-01-23 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Antarctic Research Series, Volume 71. The Antarctic Ice Sheet has greatly affected global climate, sea level, ocean circulation, and southern hemisphere biota during Cenozoic times. Much of our understanding of the evolution of the ice sheet has been inferred from isotopic studies on distant deep-ocean sediments, because few Cenozoic rocks are exposed on the Antarctic continent. Yet, large differences occur between past ice volumes inferred from isotopic studies and those inferred from low-latitude sea-level variation. The massive quantities of glacially transported terrigenous sediments that lie beneath the Antarctic continental margin provide an additional, more direct record of the inferred ice sheet fluctuations. Volume 68 addresses the history of ice sheet fluctuations as recorded by geological and geophysical investigations of selected areas of the Antarctic continental margin. As described below, the volume gives data and results from on-going research by a major multinational project directed toward better understanding the impact of Antarctic Ice Sheet fluctuations on global sea levels and climates.
