Book Single gender Female Urban Middle Schools

Download or read book Single gender Female Urban Middle Schools written by Brian Christopher Lusk and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to examine teachers' perceptions of the factors for successful implementation of a single-gender female, urban middle school. The literature suggests there are benefits and drawbacks to the single-gender schooling model. Moreover, research indicates there are fewer benefits for boys than girls. While the literature illuminates there are more benefits for girls, little research outlines the specific factors for the successful implementation of the all-girls, single-gender urban middle school. Teachers involved in this qualitative case study were able to identify factors, share their experiences, identify challenges, and ways in which they addressed the challenges in implementing the all-girls, single-gender urban middle school. The study findings revealed the critical factor of staffing the school with a committed group of educators motivated to meet the instructional needs of the girls. Additionally, perceptions for factors of successful implementation of the single-gender middle school included administrative leadership and expectations as essential components, as well as staffing, professional development, campus culture, and a pilot program. Teachers' experiences in implementing the single-gender middle school illustrated the importance of building positive relationships with the students and developing teaching strategies to meet the needs of the students. Teachers also faced challenges in implementing the all-girls school, including preparation and planning for lessons as well as consistency in procedures. Such challenges were addressed by building relationships, differentiating instruction, and creating an advisory period

Book Principal s and Teachers Perceptions of Professional Development in an Urban Middle School

Download or read book Principal s and Teachers Perceptions of Professional Development in an Urban Middle School written by Benita Contreras and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several significant findings emerged from this study: (a) there was an inconsistency between the school's professional development goals and the actual professional development that teachers experienced---teachers noted the inconsistent quality of professional development from year to year, (b) teachers at different stages of adulthood and career stages sought different types of professional development, (c) both teacher and administrator participants perceived that the external qualities of the presenter and the presenter's knowledge of the subject matter were indicators of effective professional development and (d) collegiality was acknowledged by all participants as essential to the school's goals and effective adult learning. These findings have significant implications for future planning of professional development in urban middle schools in particular where unacceptable numbers of these students become dropout statistics in high school.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The research question addressed is, what are effective classroom management strategies for urban middle school learners? This capstone project details how the author determined how teachers used management strategies in urban middle school classrooms by observing one classroom, surveying two classrooms of students and the teachers, and by interviewing urban faculty. Four themes emerge from this review, analysis, and synthesis of the research: fostering a positive learning and teaching environment; being culturally responsive to students; creating structured routines and procedures; and building relationships with students" --

Book Urban Middle School Teachers Perceptions of Self efficacy in Designing Using and Interpreting Common Formative Assessments

Download or read book Urban Middle School Teachers Perceptions of Self efficacy in Designing Using and Interpreting Common Formative Assessments written by Brandy J. Bunnell and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, exploratory study was to describe urban middle school content-teachers' reports of self-efficacy in designing, using, and interpreting standards-aligned common formative assessments in order to improve student learning. For the purposes of this study self-efficacy is not a general belief, but one related to specific tasks (Bandura, 1997). As such, the demands of specific tasks within a specified domain serve as the basis upon which judgments of capability are made. Data was also collected concerning experiences that teachers perceived as being most helpful in the development of their confidence regarding these practices. This study was conducted in four urban school districts in Connecticut. Middle school teachers of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies were polled. The Sense of Efficacy: Common Formative Assessments Survey (Bunnell, 2010), a researcher-developed Internet-based survey, was completed by 64 teachers. Data analyses revealed that a simple majority of urban middle school teachers who participated reported moderately high levels of self-efficacy in the tasks associated with designing, using, and interpreting common formative assessments. Participants reported that they gained confidence from activities mainly associated with emotional arousal, vicarious experiences and enactive mastery experiences.

Book Identifying Students Perceptions of MASTER Teacher Model Classroom Management Strategies at River Valley Middle School

Download or read book Identifying Students Perceptions of MASTER Teacher Model Classroom Management Strategies at River Valley Middle School written by Jenna K. Kuenster and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the following research was to identify students' perceptions of the effectiveness of the MASTER Teacher Model behavior management strategies in addressing and reducing the frequency of three common behavior problems at the middle school level. The growing number of discipline referrals related to students talking out of turn during class, being disrespectful toward others, and cheating on academic work prompted this research study. Student perceptions must be considered and understood when discussing behavior management approaches and programs implemented with adolescents in the school setting. The results of the study show that eighth grade students at River Valley Middle School, on average, perceive most of the MASTER Teacher Model strategies to be effective tools for addressing and reducing problem behaviors at this level. While some strategies are viewed to be less effective, specific management strategies, including teacher proximity and the teacher meeting with the student and his/her parents or guardians to discuss problem behaviors, are perceived by students to be quite effective. The results indicate that middle school teachers should incorporate these strategies as primary classroom management tools and the remaining strategies as secondary approaches in their daily teaching practices.
