Book Urban Life in Kingston Jamaica

Download or read book Urban Life in Kingston Jamaica written by Diane Austin-Broos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1984, recounts the daily life, the politics, religion and leisure pursuits of Jamaicans in working- and middle-class Kingston. The study is based upon the author’s observations of life in Selton Town and Vermount, two neighborhoods of Kingston, between 1971 and 1982. The author analyses the local social conflicts and ideologies, thereby, demonstrating how larger issues of class domination and cultural hegemony pervade neighbourhood life. The study provides a detailed contextual account of the significance of belonging to different classes. It provides a different perspective of Caribbean anthropology combining the techniques of ethnography and political economy.

Book Decolonizing the Colonial City

Download or read book Decolonizing the Colonial City written by Colin Clarke and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sequel to Kingston, Jamaica: Urban Development and Social Change, 1692 to 1962 (1975) Colin Clarke investigates the role of class, colour, race, and culture in the changing social stratification and spatial patterning of Kingston, Jamaica since independence in 1962. He also assesses the strains - created by the doubling of the population - on labour and housing markets, which are themselves important ingredients in urban social stratification. Special attention is also given to colour, class, and race segregation, to the formation of the Kingston ghetto, to the role of politics in the creation of zones of violence and drug trading in downtown Kingston, and to the contribution of the arts to the evolution of national culture. A special feature is the inclusion of multiple maps produced and compiled using GIS (geographical information systems). The book concludes with a comparison with the post-colonial urban problems of South Africa and Brazil, and an evalution of the de-colonization of Kingston.

Book Kingston Jamaica

Download or read book Kingston Jamaica written by Colin G. Clarke and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kingston Jamaica: Urban Development and Social Change 1692-2002, presents a cross –sectional approach to the social and economic development of one of the most vibrant cities in the Caribbean. This new edition of Colin Clarke’s path-breaking book extends the examination and analysis of Kingston’s social and economic development from the end of the colonial period, thus making it one of the few studies of any British Caribbean city for the entire colonial period and beyond. Professor Clarke not only reflects on his original field work of forty-five years earlier and evaluates the existing text in relation to changing social theory in the intervening years, but also introduces the reader to the process of decolonization and its implications for urbanization, economic development and social change. Particular attention is given to the development of Portmore and to the incorporation of Spanish Town into the Kingston Metropolitan Region. He also examines the social and spatial structure of Kingston since 1962, focusing on urban decentralization, the development of uptown and downtown and the shift towards greater class entrenchment under the impact of structural adjustment. An outstanding feature of the book is the extensive use of cartography to express both the social and spatial development changing land use; changing land use; changing distribution and density of population; migration; employment; house tenure; the uptown/downtown division and the relationship between class, family structure, religion, education and race/colour are only some of the features that are graphically illustrated and anaylsed with the aid of over 100 maps, 50 photographs and some 40 tables. In its treatment of the social spatial structure over time, Kingston Jamaica: Urban Development and Social Change 1692-2002, is unparalleled among studies of cities in non-advanced capitalist countries.

Book Rethinking Feminist Interventions into the Urban

Download or read book Rethinking Feminist Interventions into the Urban written by Linda Peake and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Rethinking Feminist Interventions into the Urban, Linda Peake and Martina Rieker embark on an ambitious project to explore the extent to which a feminist re-imagining of the twenty-first century city can form the core of a new emerging analytic of women and the neoliberal urban. In a world in which the majority of the population now live in urban centres, they take as their starting point the need to examine the production of knowledge about the city through the problematic divide of the global north and south, asking what might a feminist intervention, a position itself fraught with possibilities and problems, into this dominant geographical imaginary look like. Providing a meaningful discussion of the ways in which feminism, gender and women have been understood in relation to the city and urban studies, they ask probing and insightful questions that indicate new directions for theory and research, illustrating the necessity of a re-formulation of the north-south divide as a critical and urgent project for feminist urban studies. Working through platforms as diverse as policy formulations and telling stories, the contributors to the book come from a range of disciplinary backgrounds and geographic locations ranging through the Caribbean, North America, Western Europe, South, East and South East Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. They identify a range of issues (such as care, work, violence, the household, mobility, intimacy and poverty) that they analytically address to make sense of and reanimate resistance to the contemporary urban through articulations of new grammars of gendered geographies of justice.

Book Transformative Tenements

Download or read book Transformative Tenements written by Sheldon Ricketts and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hardened inner city community of Trench Town represents one of several impoverished communities that form the heart of the Jamaican capital city, Kingston. As wealth and influence have moved inland, off the coastal plains on which the city was originally settled on, to the slopes of the surrounding mountains, the once vibrant downtown core has decayed. With this urban decay came the social ills that usually accompany failing communities such as crime, violence, shadow economies, health and sanitation issues. As has been the case with many urban centres worldwide, this problem was further exacerbated by an ever present influx of rural immigrants in search of a better life in the city. These associated urban problems not only affect the inhabitants of these communities, but they stifle the growth of the larger national economy. This thesis aims to explore and propose urban design interventions to the inner city community of Trench Town, that not only address the issues of providing viable shelter to the residents of the community, but also begin to set up a frame work of self reliance and economic sustainability and growth, so that the community members can begin to develop their lives for themselves. It also begins to look at ideas of communal living that have been experimented with at on a small scale over the years, but have never been fully integrated into the urban fabric. This thesis looks to examine one specific community within the urban fabric of the city, but all the while cognisant of the fact that this one community is but one in the overall urban fabric, yet recognising that as each informal inner-city community has developed out of a unique set of conditions and thus must be treated individually as such. Throughout the years, several interventions have been implemented to address the overall need to house the population of the expanding urban centres, with many variations of urban housing solutions being used, with varying degrees of success. This thesis will explore the implications of these solutions on the proposed site, and explore viable modifications and variations. Firstl an in depth exploration into the historical and cultural context of the case site will be explored to gain important background knowledge of known factors of spatial development and community needs, and this will form the foundation of any further development going ahead in the case study, which will provide the analytical breakdown of the site and influences. The thesis will then explore international case studies of various approaches to similar situations to identify challenges that have been experienced elsewhere and that may inform the design site. From this research information, parameters and principles will be distilled to inform the overall design intervention. Finally, the proposed design intervention will be reflected upon, and evaluated to try to determine any shortcomings and indentify how the design might be replicated in other communties in Kingston facing similar social and economic conditions.
