Book excerpt: This book explores into the thorny problem of land-use regulations, outlining the arguments for and against them and detailing how the latter may have a negative impact on social welfare by driving up the cost of living. This analysis should be required reading for anyone with an interest in urban planning and policy. as it challenges some commonly held beliefs while strengthening others, and it urges that policy be aimed at maximising the benefits to city residents. It does so by articulating the reasoning of urban economics in clear, concise language and by illustrating its cities with clear, attractive graphics. While not strictly necessary, an intermediate-level understanding of microeconomics, particularly the utility theory, is helpful. Standard argument for why cities could become too crowded and fail to offer enough empty area, but he makes an important point by noting that social contact is stronger in denser areas and that this suggests that there might be such a thing as too much open space. The fact that roughly onethird of the productivity advantages from densities are taxed away by governments suggests that density in the production could be underprovided.
