Book excerpt: They say a man can't escape his past, which is true in most cases,...because, without having lived his reputable past, Upshur may not have gotten his son back and would have failed anyway, if not for the ancient Choctaw! The Indians saved Willy's life and in gratitude, Upshur gave his promise that should they ever need him, he would come. Thinking he would never have to keep the promise, he gave his word! But three months after bringing Willy home, his new friends were in trouble of a kind they could not fight alone and hope to win. An army of treasure hunters had descended on Devil Mountain, and they had a map to a fabulous gold mine. What could he do that an army of ghostly warriors could not? Not knowing the answer, he took a friend back with him,...but could they succeed? Would this mean the end to the Ancient Ones,...if so, where would they go? Their work was cut out for them, and the mystery of Devil Mountain was far from over as they would discover. What lay hidden beneath Devil Mountain, and why was it so unbelievable? What was the evil White Buffalo spoke of, and could they prevent it from escaping?

Book excerpt: William Upshur and friends fi nally had life at the mountain going their way. Th e bridge through the bat caves large entrance was at last fi nished, as well as the massive wall of logs surrounding it. Th e Trading Post was in operation, their homes built and occupied. Rodney Taylor, and Peter Birdsong were busy with their duties as Federal Marshals. They were settled in and happy. But as we all know, as did they, nothing ever stays the same. Th ere are always those who get in the way of progress, or happiness, no matter how set in concrete. If not some one, then some thing will always interfere, and in this case, it was fi re. Upshur;s beloved Paris, Texas was on fi re, started by a drunken stepson, and so it happened that they were all visiting their families there at the time. Th fire, however, was not all they were to contend with, there was a retreating gang of renegades, led by a Mormon fugitive, hiding out in the old abandoned shipping port of Jonesboro when the fi re broke out. Th e group of men had been chased across three states by both the army, and local law enforcement agencies for months before losing the trail in Texas. A town on fi re would furnish just the cover they needed to blow the burned-out banks iron safe and fi nance their escape to Mexico. But there was an unexpected obstacle in place....UPSHUR was in town, as was Marshal Rodney Taylor.

Book excerpt: What is it that enables one gunfighter to feel the presence of another in a room full of armed cowboys and other people? Can feel the challenge, though none was verbally issued? Not even the gunman, him self can explain it, other than, it’s just a feeling, a quickening going on inside of them, unexplainable. At times, nothing more comes of it, call it a kinship, respect, whatever, but unless they communicate, or one has other business, they go their separate ways without conflict, the age-old dilemma being in effect. The rare ones, those that live by the law, enforce the law, wanting only justice for those in need, are the family men, those able to see no future in the other way of life. Some, however, have to learn about all of this the hard way, if they can live long enough. These are the ones that love their guns, and their ability to use one, the dangerous ones, giving no quarter, and asking none. But when two men with the same talent come together, men with two opposite philosophies, only one, or neither will walk away from it. Unless, Bill Upshur’s, “Adage, add-on” Comes into effect, making the Gunfighter’s dilemma a working instrument of fate, it’s self. Two men, well,...one man, one boy, totally opposite in every way, but one, their unbelievable ability in the use of firearms, men separated by only a month, and a thousand miles are destined to meet in a struggle of life and death, one that will take only a fraction of a blink of the eye to settle. One that in all certainty will result in both their deaths, but will happen, never the less. But what one lone gunman can actually learn during that month long, thousand mile journey to kill a man, very well could be priceless, one never knows. But a challenge can come in many different forms. Hope you like this one. Thanks, Otis Morphew

Because he had already made the decision to resign once the assignment was over. As it turned out, it was a far from routine last job, as they were taking escaped, condemned convicts back to Judge Isaac Parker to be hanged. Before it was over, they were forced to fight for their lives, because there were others who wanted to free them again. But you have already read the accounts of this last mission. Upshur's adopted father had been shot by a wanted gunslinger, a killer that also stole the aging man's pet horse. As was his way, and the rules he lived by, Upshur could not let this senseless deed go unpunished. He vowed to track this killer down, and would find him whatever it took, ...trailing him for more than a hundred miles. But there, he was shot for his trouble, almost killed by the very gunman he was hunting. But it would not end there, not for Upshur! Near death at first, he recovered enough to go after the young gunman again. Only now, Rodney Taylor had come into the picture and together, would once again try and complete another assignment, ...one even more deadly than the previous one. Because Upshur would be facing a killer, that some believed was as fast with a gun as he was, ...or faster! Every one in Paris, Texas was up in arms, because the Killer had shot the Town's most loved citizen. Doc. Bailey Helped to build the town of Paris, was there when it was surveyed, delivered the babies that would make Paris the city it had become. He had touched every man, woman and child in town in so many ways. They all were waiting for Upshur to take their revenge on this man, ...as they were all his family, too!

Book A Patriot s History of the United States

Download or read book A Patriot s History of the United States written by Larry Schweikart and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-12-29 with total page 1373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.
