A thorough investigation reveals it to be a mere conceptual idea that exists only as a thought whose nature is constant change.When ego-clinging is loosened there is a natural openness, freedom, and relaxation that allows love and compassion to arise. As attachment is removed, love and compassion radiate out very easily, without effort.Using analytic meditation to look closely at ego-clinging is so important because it establishes a foundation upon which there can be proper development. Any progress made without this foundation will eventually collapse. The definitive understanding established by analytic meditation is to not be attached to any aspect of reality. Arriving at the state of awareness that is beyond attachment causes us to perceive everything as being in transit, moving, changing, and only manifestingon a temporary basis. Relaxing in the momentary manifestation ofphenomena is meditation. To experience all of samsara in its momentary state makes our mind very strong and courageous, so it can approach any situation fearlessly.

As with the more general problems of change, uprooting can be a time of human disaster and desolation, or a time of adaptation and growth into new capacities. The special quality of uprooting is that the need to change is faced at a time of separation from accustomed social, cultural, and environ mental support systems. It is this separation from familiar supports that either renders the uprooted vulnerable to the destructive conse quences of change, or creates freedoms for their evolution into new and constructive patterns of life. Whether the outcomes will be destruc tive or constructive will be determined by the forces at work: the nature and power of the uprooting forces versus the personal and societal capacities for coping with them. Uprooting events are so widespread as to be compared with the major rites of life, but with the difference that dislocation is involved. Uprooting reaches from self-imposed movements such as rural-to urban migration, running away, and traveling abroad for schooling, to natural and man-made disasters such as earthquakes, political oppres sion, and war. The impacts vary from the need to adapt to. a new culture for an interim period of study to the desolating consequences of the total loss of family, friends, home, and country.

A study of their history entails the reconstruction of the sound system (phonology) of PAn and an exposition of the sound laws (rules) whereby the original sounds changed into those attested in the current An languages. The primary aim of this work is to examine exhaustively the forms that can be reconstructed for PAn and also for the earliest stage after the An languages began to spread southward from Taiwan. For the later stages—that is, forms that can be traced no further back than to the proto-languages of late subgroups, we do not attempt to be exhaustive but confine ourselves to only some of the forms that are traceable to those times, treating those that figure prominently in the literature on historical An linguistics or those that have special characteristics important for understanding in general how forms arose and the processes that led to change. In short, the aim of this study is not just to reconstruct protomorphemes and order the reflexes according to the entries they fit under, but rather to account for the history of each fom1 that is attested and explain what happened historically to yield the attestations. Volume 2 of the Proto-Austronesian Phonology is divided into four parts and contains a glossary, finder lists from the English translation, a bibliography, and an index.

Mipham interprets Shāntideva according to the view of the Nyingma school, which in some respects was at variance with the religiously and politically dominant interpretation of the text in Tibet at that time. As a result, his commentary stirred up a furious debate. With the addition of a critique of Mipham Rinpoche’s view by a prominent scholar of the time, along with Mipham’s response, that debate is beautifully captured in this volume.

Book excerpt: The fifth book of the Aṅguttara Nikāya, the Collection of the Numbered Discourses of the Buddha, collects 1152 suttas or discourses whose subject matter is centered on groups of five topics. It should be remembered that the nikāyas were composed to be transmitted orally at a time when no writing system had yet been reintroduced in India. By that time, the ancient scripts of the archaic Harappan civilization had lost their meaning no less than fifteen centuries earlier and are still undecipherable to this day. Remembering was the key and redundancy was the guarantee for successful transmission. All suttas fit into complex mnemonic systems designed to be tolerant to errors and even loss of data. This not only served in its day for correct transmission, but becomes the most powerful tool for supporting the reconstruction of the message. This is especially important for The Book of Fives. This book contains suttas to be read, except for the final Mātikās contained in the last chapter. The contents do not enhance the interest of its predecessors in the numbered collection, and in no way displace the main work, the Saṃyutta Nikaya. In the section of anecdotal suttas, he returns to the nefariousness of the rulers, in the line of the previous ones. In this case, the legitimate and meritorious defense of one's own wealth against the scourge of the rulers in AN 5.41 and AN 5.148 is included. AN 5.104 reflects their corrupt behavior. We can highlight the suttas in which the Buddha denounces false bhikkhus who pretend to be bhikkhus in order to make a living by propagating false doctrines. In AN 5.80 and AN 5.167 he speaks of those false bhikkhus who live in houses or who are ordained as a bastard means of earning a living. Messages that are very topical today. On the side of the false suttas marked with double asterisk (**), we find this time only two false suttas. AN 5.229: Poisonous black snakes (I), the Buddha supposedly confers on women epithets such as these: "She is disgusting, stinking, cowardly, frightening and treacherous. These are the five drawbacks of a woman." AN 5.230: Poisonous black snakes (II). If the above was not enough, and so that there is no doubt about the misogynistic message that hangs on the Buddha, the sutta finishes off the woman like this: "She is irritable, hostile, venomous, biting and treacherous. This is the poison of a woman: she is usually very lustful. This is the forked tongue of a woman: she usually speaks divisively. This is the treachery of a woman: she is usually an adulteress." In short, we are still engaged in an arduous and exhaustive work of research and reconstruction in comparative linguistics to unravel some texts of little interest.
