Book excerpt: Vendian System summarizes the results of detailed studies carried out over 30 years at the Precambrian-Phanerozoic boundary of the Russian platform and adjacent areas. The paleontological material collected in some of the world's richest localities is unique. The reader will find a wealth of information on paleontological data as well as on stratigraphic and regional correlations, vital for the understanding of organic evolution around 600 million years ago. Volume 2 describes the regional geological background and gives a general interpretation. Volume 1 contains the systematic description and documentation of the paleontological data.

Book A Revised Correlation of the Cambrian Rocks in the British Isles

Download or read book A Revised Correlation of the Cambrian Rocks in the British Isles written by A. W. A. Rushton and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2011 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work reviews the correlation of the British and Irish Cambrian with the current (though incomplete) international standard for the Cambrian. Since the earlier edition of 1972, the basal and upper limits of the Cambrian system have been internationally agreed; so this account excludes Tremadocian rocks but includes some that were formerly considered Neoproterozoic. Half of the series and stage subdivisions are internationally agreed, but for the undefined divisions of the Cambrian the standard used here makes use of data from Avalonian successions. Since the first edition was published, almost every aspect of the Cambrian in the British Isles has been subjected to new study. Here, the plate tectonic make-up of the British Isles is reviewed, new radiometric ages and isotopic studies are summarized and the biostratigraphy is enhanced by the study of acritarchs, especially in the Irish successions.

Book The Geology of Central Europe

Download or read book The Geology of Central Europe written by Tom McCann and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2008 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 focuses on the evolution of Central Europe from the Precambrian to the Permian, a dynamic period which traces the formation of Central Europe from a series of microcontinents that separated from Gondwana through to the creation of Pangaea. Separate summary chapters on the Cadomian, Caledonian and Variscan orogenic events as well as on Palaeozoic magmatism provide an overview of the tectonic and magmatic evolution of the region. These descriptions sometimes extend beyond the borders of Central Europe to take in the Scottish and Irish Caledonides as well as the Palaeozoic successions in the Baltic region.

Book Origin and Early Evolution of the Metazoa

Download or read book Origin and Early Evolution of the Metazoa written by Jere H. Lipps and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years ago, we realized that the most prominent ideas that had been ex pressed about the origin and early evolution of the Metazoa seemed to have been developed chiefly by zoologists using evidence from modern species without reference to the fossil record. Paleontologists had, in fact, put forth their own ideas but the zoological and the paleontological evidence were about the problem, seldom considered together, especially by zoologists. We believed that the paleon tological documentation of the first Metazoa was too scattered, too obscure to Western readers, and much of it too recent to have been readily available to our colleagues in zoology. Whether or not that was entirely true, we thought that a single volume reviewing the fossil record of the earliest Metazoa would be useful to many in both paleontology and zoology, especially since so much new informa tion has been developed in the last few years. Some of this information has been summarized in general articles recently, but an overview of most of the field does not exist. We therefore organized this book in five parts so that the evidence could be placed in perspective and summarized and inferences made from it. Part I intro duces the previous hypotheses that have been proposed for the origin and early radiation of Metazoa. Part II consists of two summary chapters that set the sedi mentological, geochemical, and biological background to the known radiations of Metazoa.

Book The Precambrian Cambrian Boundary

Download or read book The Precambrian Cambrian Boundary written by John Watson Cowie and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Events across the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary brought about the most dramatic geological change in Earth's history: the appearance of invertebrates, including animals with hard parts, that began the Phanerozoic fossil record. This book provides an up-to-date review of the "Precambrian-Cambrian boundary problem" as seen by a group of experts active in this controversial area of research. For more than a decade, international groups have been unearthing new information about the sequence of events during this period, centered around the question of where to fix the actual boundary point. Using a chronological framework, the book gathers together information essential to the understanding of the evolutionary extinctions and events that brought the Precambrian period to an end.

Book From Fossils to Astrobiology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph Seckbach
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2008-11-07
  • ISBN : 140208837X

Download or read book From Fossils to Astrobiology written by Joseph Seckbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-07 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Fossils to Astrobiology reviews developments in paleontology and geobiology that relate to the rapidly-developing field of Astrobiology, the study of life in the Universe. Many traditional areas of scientific study, including astronomy, chemistry and planetary science, contribute to Astrobiology, but the study of the record of life on planet Earth is critical in guiding investigations in the rest of the cosmos. In this varied book, expert scientists from 15 countries present peer-reviewed, stimulating reviews of paleontological and astrobiological studies. The overviews of established and emerging techniques for studying modern and ancient microorganisms on Earth and beyond, will be valuable guides to evaluating biosignatures which could be found in the extraterrestrial surface or subsurface within the Solar System and beyond. This volume also provides discussion on the controversial reports of "nanobacteria" in the Martian meteorite ALH84001. It is a unique volume among Astrobiology monographs in focusing on fossil evidence from the geological record and will be valuable to students and researchers alike.

Book Taphonomy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter A. Allison
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2010-11-03
  • ISBN : 9048186439
  • Pages : 603 pages

Download or read book Taphonomy written by Peter A. Allison and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-11-03 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taphonomic bias is a pervasive feature of the fossil record. A pressing concern, however, is the extent to which taphonomic processes have varied through the ages. It is one thing to work with a biased data set and quite another to work with a bias that has changed with time. This book includes work from both new and established researchers who are using laboratory, field and data-base techniques to characterise and quantify the temporal and spatial variation in taphonomic bias. It may not provide all the answers but it will at least shed light on the right questions.
