Book Upper Midwest Freight Corridor Study

Download or read book Upper Midwest Freight Corridor Study written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing travel, freight movements, congestion, and international competition threaten the economic well being of the Upper Midwest States. More congestion, slower freight movement, fragmentation, and economic slow down are the probable outcomes if the threats are not addressed. However, planning for and managing the growth of freight transport are complex issues facing transportation agencies in the region. In an effort to crystallize the issues and generate thought and discussion, eleven white papers were written on important factors that influence freight and public policy. The papers provide the background on specific aspects of freight in the Upper Midwest. As a collection, the papers provide a primer on freight issues and related responses that may form the basis for a regional freight agenda. The Upper Midwest Freight Corridor Coalition used input from transportation administrators in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, and Iowa, as well as the provinces of Ontario and Manitoba, along with the Federal Highway Administration and researchers from the University of Wisconsin--Madison, the University of Illinois--Chicago, and the University of Toledo to draft an agenda to help meet the challenge of freight movement and economic vitality within the Upper Midwest. The agenda identifies thirteen priority initiatives to respond to growing freight demand. Data and technology are needed to support the initiatives outlined in the agenda, and both topics are discussed in subsequent plans. The final report in Volume II is a white paper explaining the importance of transportation to the economic well being of the region.

Book Study on Capacity of Railroad Network and Airport Terminals for Upper Midwest Freight Corridor

Download or read book Study on Capacity of Railroad Network and Airport Terminals for Upper Midwest Freight Corridor written by Rohini Srimantula and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing economic competitiveness among states and regions within the nation has made freight transportation an important issue in modern transportation research. It is important to find the capacities of the different modes of transportation used to carry freight and identify the bottlenecks so that necessary measures can be taken to improve capacity at such locations. The present study is divided into two parts, namely estimation of railroad capacity and airport capacity for the upper Midwest freight corridor study region. Mathematical model to estimate capacity of railroad network developed by Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co in the year 1975 was considered. For estimating the airport capacity a mathematical model developed by Noritake, M and S. Kimura in the year 1993 and a graphical method followed by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was adopted. The railroad link data, airport terminals data, runways data and air segment data for study region were obtained from Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) website. Railroad crossing inventory database was obtained from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). The BTS and FRA data obtained were large and could not be used directly into the model algorithm. Thus, selection criterion was developed to limit the railroad network and airports in the study region. The selected class I railroads and selected airports data were arranged in appropriate format for proper application of the above- specified methodologies. Application of methodologies to datasets identified the areas with excess capacity and limited capacity (Potential bottlenecks) for railroads in study region. Track utilization factor (TUF) in terms of usage to practical capacity was developed for segments of railroad network. It was observed from the study that the average train speed is the critical factor affecting the railroad capacity. The study also estimates the airport capacity and showed the freight flow (tons per month), number of passenger and freight aircrafts per hour served within each major intercity airports in the study region. It was observed that most of the major airports in the upper Midwest freight corridor study region have higher than 50 percent-unused capacities.

The report includes an analysis of each mode's capacity and the major commodities each of them moves; the barriers and constraints that impact each mode's ability to move cargo; the performance implications in terms of major commodity supply chains (coal, automotive parts and machinery, containerized consumer goods, grains, and iron ore); and a strategic freight planning process for multimodal transport chain performance going forward."--Publisher's description.

Book Measure of Truck Delay and Reliability at the Corridor Level

Download or read book Measure of Truck Delay and Reliability at the Corridor Level written by Chen-Fu Liao and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freight transportation provides a significant contribution to our nation’s economy. A reliable and accessible freight network enables business in the Twin Cities to be more competitive in the Upper Midwest region. Accurate and reliable freight data on freight activity is essential for freight planning, forecasting and decision making on infrastructure investment. A report entitled “Twin Cities Metropolitan Region Freight Study” published by MnDOT and the Metropolitan Council in 2013, suggested a need to understand where and when trucks are most affected by congestion. A framework for truck data collection and analysis was recommended to better understand the relationships between truck traffic and congestion in rush hours. Building upon our previous study to measure freight mobility and reliability along 38 key freight corridors in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area (TCMA), this study leveraged our previous effort to implement the performance measures using the National Performance Measurement Research Dataset (NPMRDS) from the USDOT. The researcher team first worked with stakeholders to prioritize a list of key freight corridors with recurring congestion in peak periods in the TCMA. We used 24 months of NPMRDS data to measure travel time reliability and estimate truck delay at the corridor level and to identify system impediments during the peak hours. The objective is to use performance measures for assessing impact of truck congestions and identifying operational bottlenecks or physical constraints. Trucking activity nearby a congested area is examined to analyze traffic pattern and investigate possible causes of recurring congestions.

Book Globalized Freight Transport

Download or read book Globalized Freight Transport written by T. R. Leinbach and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editors as well as the authors of these essays should be commended for bringing together and discussing within this volume many of the important issues facing globalized freight movements. Robert Martin, The Professional Geographer . . . Leinbach and Capineri have produced an interesting and useful addition to the literature on this massive subject. . . Anthony Beresfore, International Journal of Maritime History Globalization is a fashionable issue. But solid research on the conditions and implications for freight transport is badly missing. This volume contains a unique set of high-quality contributions on freight transport in the age of globalization. It offers a wealth of original insights to both the research and policy-making community. Peter Nijkamp, VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands The worldwide movement of freight has emerged as one of the most critical and dynamic aspects of the transport sector. The contributors to this study examine the current state of global freight transport, with an emphasis on Europe and North America and their extra-regional linkages. These original contributions synthesize existing knowledge, highlight new developments, problems and possible solutions, and underscore the need for further research. The book s starting point is the fact that freight transport is the main element supporting global supply and commodity chains, from the transformation of raw materials to market distribution and after-market services. However, as the authors point out, the rising costs associated with security and various other constraints, as well as the complexity of getting goods delivered, is adding to profit pressures faced by manufacturers around the globe. Despite the application of technology and increasingly efficient solutions to the movement of freight, constraint points and conditions obstructing smooth operations and sustainability have developed. These difficulties affect both the environment and economic growth. Examining the issues from four critical perspectives intermodality, e-commerce and technology, logistics, and sustainability Globalized Freight Transport captures the concern for the viability of freight systems and the ways they are impacting the global economy. This cutting-edge study will be of great interest to students and scholars of transportation, as well as to public sector policymakers and private sector managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Midwest has always been the heart of America-both its economic bellwether and the repository of its national identity. Now, in a new, globalized age, the Midwest is challenged as never before. With an influx of immigrant workers and an outpouring of manufacturing jobs, the region that defines the American self-the Lake Wobegon image of solid, hardworking farmers and factory hands-is changing at breakneck speed. As factory farms and global forces displace old ways of life, the United States is being transformed literally from the inside out. In Caught in the Middle, longtime Chicago Tribune reporter Richard C. Longworth explores the new reality of life in today's heartland and reveals what these changes mean for the region-and the country. Ranging from the manufacturing collapse that has crippled the Midwest to the biofuels revolution that may save it, and from the school districts struggling with new migrants to the Iowa meatpacking town that can't survive without them, Longworth addresses what's right and what's wrong in the region, and offers a prescription for how it must change-politically as well as economically-if it is to survive and prosper.

Book Great Lakes Shipping Trade and Aquatic Invasive Species

Download or read book Great Lakes Shipping Trade and Aquatic Invasive Species written by Transportation Research Board and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-09-18 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB Special Report 291: Great Lakes Shipping, Trade, and Aquatic Invasive Species reviews existing research and efforts to date to reduce aquatic invasive species introductions into the Great Lakes and identifies ways that these efforts could be strengthened toward an effective solution. Since its opening in 1959, the St. Lawrence Seaway has provided a route into the Great Lakes not only for trade, but also unfortunately for aquatic invasive species (AIS) that have had severe economic and environmental impacts on the region. Prevention measures have been introduced by the governments of Canada and the United States, but reports of newly discovered AIS continue, and only time will tell what impacts these species may have. Pressure to solve the problem has even led to proposals that the Seaway be closed. The committee that developed the report recommends that trade should continue on the St. Lawrence Seaway but with a more effective suite of prevention measures to reduce the introduction of aquatic invasive species that evolves over time in response to lessons learned and new technologies.
