Book Upon a Trailing Edge

Download or read book Upon a Trailing Edge written by Michael Joy and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-11-28 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of aviation, risk and the heart of the pilot. Four out of five fatal aircraft accidents are due to human error; three out of five to pilot error. This book examines the technical aspects of these issues from the viewpoint of one of the UK's most experienced aviation cardiologists. It spans the end of the Second World War through teaching cardiology in aviation on behalf of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) worldwide, via a history of powered flight, time in the cadet force, a flying scholarship on a Tiger Moth, training to be a doctor, later a cardiologist, and owing a series of aircraft. Michael Joy was appointed as cardiologist to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in 1974 to assist the regulator in the development of standards of cardiological fitness. Error, risk and accident causation are introduced in the context of various fatal accidents. In this stimulating and highly informative autobiography, Michael looks back at his time with the ICAO and CAA, drafting cardiological standards for Europe and worldwide travel to spread the message, including the Khyber pass, an aircraft factory in the Indonesian jungle and the slave island of Goree in Senegal. Safety is no accident and history is its judge.

Book Transonic Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Supercritical wing Transport Model with Trailing edge Controls

Download or read book Transonic Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Supercritical wing Transport Model with Trailing edge Controls written by Michael J. Mann and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of wing trailing-edge control surfaces on the static transonic aerodynamic characteristics of a transport configuration with a supercritical wing were studied. The configuration was tested with both an area-ruled fuselage and a cylindrical fuselage. The Mach number range was from 0.80 to 0.96 and the angle of attack range was from -1 deg to 12 deg. The Reynolds number was 1,580,000 based on the mean aerodynamic chord. Tabular data are presented.

Book Experimental Investigation Base Pressure on Blunt trailing edge Wings at Supersonic Velocities

Download or read book Experimental Investigation Base Pressure on Blunt trailing edge Wings at Supersonic Velocities written by Dean R. Chapman and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 852 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pressres acting on the base of blunt-trailing-edge airfoils have been measured at Mach numbers of 1.25, 1.5, 2.0, and 3.1 and at Reynolds numbers from 0.2 to 3.8 million. Data are presented for 29 profiles both with laminar and with turbulent boundary layers approaching the trailing edges of the wings. The base pressure is found to be a function primarily of Mach number and the ratio of the boundary layer thickeness at the trailing edge to the trailing-edge thickness.

Book Vortex Rings and Jets

Download or read book Vortex Rings and Jets written by Daniel T. H. New and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, recent developments in our understanding of fundamental vortex ring and jet dynamics will be discussed, with a view to shed light upon their near-field behaviour which underpins much of their far-field characteristics. The chapters provide up-to-date research findings by their respective experts and seek to link near-field flow physics of vortex ring and jet flows with end-applications in mind. Over the past decade, our knowledge on vortex ring and jet flows has grown by leaps and bounds, thanks to increasing use of high-fidelity, high-accuracy experimental techniques and numerical simulations. As such, we now have a much better appreciation and understanding on the initiation and near-field developments of vortex ring and jet flows under many varied initial and boundary conditions. Chapter 1 outlines the vortex ring pinch-off phenomenon and how it relates to the initial stages of jet formations and subsequent jet behaviour, while Chapter 2 takes a closer look at the behaviour resulting from vortex ring impingement upon solid boundaries and how the use of a porous surface alters the impingement process. Chapters 3 and 4 focus upon the formation of synthetic jets from vortex ring structures experimentally and numerically, the challenges in understanding the relationships between their generation parameters and how they can be utilized in flow separation control problems. Chapter 5 looks at the use of imposing selected nozzle trailing-edge modifications to effect changes upon the near-field dynamics associated with circular, noncircular and coaxial jets, with a view to control their mixing behaviour. And last but not least, Chapter 6 details the use of unique impinging jet configurations and how they may lend themselves towards greater understanding and operating efficacies in heat transfer problems. This book will be useful to postgraduate students and researchers alike who wish to get up to speed regarding the latest developments in vortex ring and jet flow behaviour and how their interesting flow dynamics may be put into good use in their intended applications.
