Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As development overturns the landscape of North Carolina, tenth-grader Chris Fuller knows he’ll end up fighting Brandon, a new kid who just moved into the housing development that destroyed Chris’s beloved pine forest. Brandon turns out to be a real runner, far better than Chris, shows no respect for locals, and when it comes to a school project that has Chris baffled, slams his hand down and says, “It’s as good as done!” Chris needs an idea for the project, but mostly he’s trying to find a way to be talking to violinist Muriel. She makes the crazy suggestion he try talking to someone from the past, anyone who might give him an idea. But he’s pretty sure he’s already been spoken to, maybe by a mythological night sky jaguar, who asks, “Do you know how fire burns in water?” When Chris’s first idea falters and he gets desperate, the jaguar makes a way for Brandon’s troubled past and Chris’s faithfulness as a friend to cross paths and carry them to a new place of standing and friendship.

Download or read book Age Dating Stars written by Maurizio Salaris and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The determination of stellar ages has been - and still is - crucial for the development of our understanding of the universe, and to constrain theoretical models for the formation of galaxies and the evolution of planetary systems. Stellar ages provide scientists with timescales, and these timescales allow us to identify the relevant physical processes responsible for the development of cosmic structures. This book describes in a simple, yet rigorous, manner the vast array of techniques that have been developed and are currently being used to determine the ages of stars. It also explores how stellar ages inform our knowledge about planets, star clusters, galaxies, even distant galaxies that we cannot resolve into individual stars. Up-to-date with the latest research and technologies in the field, it includes the cutting-edge methods being used based on asteroseismology and discusses open problems that remain to be pondered in future research. It will be of interest to advanced undergraduates and graduate students studying astronomy, in addition to the general public. Key Features Presents an entertaining and accessible approach whilst also providing a rigorous and comprehensive presentation of the subject Describes how to unveil the ages of stellar populations in distant galaxies that we cannot resolve into individual stars Contains historical notes about these techniques, outstanding major problems, and a discussion on future developments in the field

What do they have in common? They discover that they are all grandmothers who know little about psychic or spiritual worlds. What do they want? To keep a good face on things; ‘things’ being quite a lot of difficult issues... What do they really want? Life change? Reclaiming their dreams? What do they get? The Holy Grail. And all they were looking for was a way out of sudden old age... Following her classic Girona trilogy – The City of Secrets, The Portal and The Stone Cradle – Patrice Chaplin returns to the enchanted city for a new adventure. Many decades have passed since, as a teenage traveller seeking a Bohemian lifestyle, she stepped across the threshold of the iron bridge and into the hallowed old city. Now in her later years, she finds herself unexpectedly with two other women of a certain age. In the midst of changing lives, they are each seeking freedom, meaning and truth. What they encounter initially is confusion, chaos and misunderstanding. But will they discover the thing that can reconcile themselves to each other, to their lives and to themselves?

Download or read book Aid and Comfort written by Henry Mark Holzer and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Fonda's visit to Hanoi in July 1972 and her pro-North Vietnamese, anti-American conduct, especially her pose with an anti-aircraft gun used to shoot down American planes and her propaganda broadcasts directed toward American troops, angered many Americans. In their eyes, she was guilty of treason, but she was never charged by the American legal system. Instead, she has made millions, been the recipient of countless awards, and remained an honored American icon. This work investigates Fonda's activities in North Vietnam and argues that she could have been indicted for treason, that there would have been enough evidence to take the case to a jury, that she could have been convicted, and that a conviction probably would have been upheld on appeal. It also considers Fonda's early life and the effect it had on her behavior and beliefs in her later years, her audience of American POWs who were forced by the Vietnamese to listen to her broadcasts condemning them as war criminals, her arrival in Vietnam and how it was viewed by American servicemen and civilians, the crime of treason throughout history, and the only Congressional inquiry into her actions, which resulted in the government's decision to take no legal action against her. Texts of Fonda's radio broadcasts to American servicemen comprise the appendix.
