Book excerpt: EXODUS-meaning Exit God said to Abram, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years. But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve, and afterward, they will come out with many possessions. And as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age. Then in the fourth generation, they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete." This is "The Sons of Israel's" exit story The sons of Israel were invited to live in Egypt by the Pharaoh. Joseph, son of Jacob called Israel, Viceroy of Egypt, oversaw Egypt's welfare. The kindness shown to Joseph and his family by the Pharaoh allowed the Israelites to grow unmolested in great numbers. A new king of Egypt who did not know Joseph or his contribution to Egypt's good health only saw foreigners living in his country. Concerned with self-preservation began a process of oppression and enslavement of the sons of Israel. Take note there are two things going on here, the deliverance of an oppressed people and the building of a nation of people complete with a set of rules to live by. In this book, you will learn of Moses, the ten plagues, the "Passover," passage through the Red Sea, the burning bush, Mount Sinai, Aaron the priest, the golden calf, the "Ten Commandments," "Manna," the bread from heaven, the Sabbath day, social and economic regulations, the Tabernacle, the breach of the "Covenant" and much, much more.

On the first day of the second month of the second year after the sons of Israel departed Egypt, at the base of Mount Sinai, God directs Moses to take a census of the congregation of the sons of Israel by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the of names, every male, head by head from twenty years old and upward, whoever is able to go out to war in Israel. This book details thirty-eight years of wandering in the desert. Spies were sent out to investigate the Land of Canaan. They brought back a disparaging report displeasing to God. The next thirty-eight years are tumultuous. Miriam, Moses' sister becomes leprous, Moses' authority is challenged by Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. God affirms Aarons's priesthood, fiery serpents, encounters with Balaam and Balak, and a second census is taken. A successor is named to succeed Moses, apportioning of the Land of Canaan for an inheritance, and women's rights are set forth.

This book sets forth the radical hypothesis that those laws in the covenant code that are similar to Deuteronomy and the Holiness Code are in fact later than both of these, and therefore can't be taken as the foundation of Hebrew Law.

Download or read book Legal Writing Legal Practice written by Yael Landman and published by SBL Press. This book was released on 2022-03-04 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prescriptive law writings rarely mirror the ways a society practices law, a fact that raises special problems for the social and legal historian. Through close analysis of the laws of bailment (i.e., temporary safekeeping) in Exodus 22, Yael Landman probes the relationship of law in the biblical law collections and law-in-practice in ancient Israel and exposes a vision of divine justice at the heart of pentateuchal law. Landman further demonstrates that ancient Near Eastern bailment laws continue to influence postbiblical Jewish law. This book advances an approach to the study of biblical law that connects pentateuchal and ancient Near Eastern law collections, biblical narrative and prophecy, and Mesopotamian legal documents and joins philological and comparative analysis with humanistic legal approaches, in order to access how people thought about and practiced law in ancient Israel.

Download or read book Biblical Covenantalism Volume 1 written by Douglas W. Kennard and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: VOLUME ONE: Biblical Covenantalism in Torah: Judaism, Covenant Nomism, and Atonement VOLUME TWO: Biblical Covenantalism in Prophets, Psalms, Early Judaism, and Gospels: Judaism, Covenant Nomism, and Kingdom Hope VOLUME THREE: Biblical Covenantalism in New Testament Epistles: Engagement of the New Perspective and New Covenant Atonement Biblical covenantalism is the backbone of the Old Testament and the root of salvation and ethics. This book offers a nuanced exploration of biblical theology with an emphasis on how biblical covenants set a complex trajectory for Israel’s covenant relationships, salvation, ethics, and eschatology. Suzerainty treaty form positions the Mosaic covenant in a Deuteronomistic framework that elects Israel and rewards them with blessings based upon obedience to the stipulations of the covenant within which God has embraced them. Such a framework fits within covenant nomism (law), especially considering the majority of the stipulations’ similarity to ancient Near Eastern law codes. This perspective deepens awareness of biblical trajectory in interaction with early Jewish and Christian sources. Jewish metaphors inform Old Testament, rabbinic, and Messianic atonement. This view positions itself between the New Perspective and traditional Reformation views as well as Covenant theology and Dispensationalism, even as it distances itself from American Covenantalism, Theonomy, Natural law, and the prayer of Jabez. The biblical and second temple Jewish material provides a nuanced new perspective of Judaism. From this same covenantal root, the Biblical covenants ground an eschatological hope for the nation of Israel.

Download or read book The Exodus written by Richard Elliott Friedman and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Exodus has become a core tradition of Western civilization. Millions read it, retell it, and celebrate it. But did it happen? Biblical scholars, Egyptologists, archaeologists, historians, literary scholars, anthropologists, and filmmakers are drawn to it. Unable to find physical evidence until now, many archaeologists and scholars claim this mass migration is just a story, not history. Others oppose this conclusion, defending the biblical account. Like a detective on an intricate case no one has yet solved, pioneering Bible scholar and bestselling author of Who Wrote the Bible? Richard Elliott Friedman cuts through the noise — the serious studies and the wild theories — merging new findings with new insight. From a spectrum of disciplines, state-of-the-art archeological breakthroughs, and fresh discoveries within scripture, he brings real evidence of a historical basis for the exodus — the history behind the story. The biblical account of millions fleeing Egypt may be an exaggeration, but the exodus itself is not a myth. Friedman does not stop there. Known for his ability to make Bible scholarship accessible to readers, Friedman proceeds to reveal how much is at stake when we explore the historicity of the exodus. The implications, he writes, are monumental. We learn that it became the starting-point of the formation of monotheism, the defining concept of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Moreover, we learn that it precipitated the foundational ethic of loving one’s neighbors — including strangers — as oneself. He concludes, the actual exodus was the cradle of global values of compassion and equal rights today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work Calum Carmichael—a legal scholar who applies a literary approach to the study of the Bible—shows how each law and each narrative in Numbers, the least researched book in the Pentateuch, responds to problems arising in narrative incidents in Genesis. The book continues Carmichael’s process of demonstrating how every law in the Pentateuch is a response to a problem arising in a biblical narrative, not to an inferred societal situation.
