  • Author : Jonny Steinberg
  • Publisher : Jonathan Ball Publishers

Download or read book Thin Blue written by Jonny Steinberg and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2010-11-22 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A country is policed only to the extent that it consents to be. When that consent is withheld, cops either negotiate or withdraw. Once they do this, however, they are no longer police; their role becomes something far murkier. Several months before they exploded into xenophobic violence, Jonny Steinberg travelled the streets of Alexandra, Reiger Park and other Johannesburg townships with police patrols. His mission was to discover the unwritten rules of engagement emerging between South Africa's citizens and its new police force. In this provocative new book, Steinberg argues that policing in crowded urban space is like theatre. Only here, the audience writes the script, and if the police don't perform the right lines, the spectators throw them off the stage. In vivid and eloquent prose, Steinberg takes us into the heart of this drama, and picks apart the rules South Africans have established for the policing of their communities. What emerges is a lucid and original account of a much larger matter: the relationship between ordinary South Africans and the government they have elected to rule them. The government and its people are like scorned lovers, Steinberg argues: their relationship, brittle, moody, untrusting and ultimately very needy.

Book Please Sit Over There

Download or read book Please Sit Over There written by Francine Parham and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key to your career advancement is understanding how power works--who has it, where it hides, and how it's used. Please Sit Over There teaches Black women the career skills they need to navigate an uneven playing field and achieve long-lasting professional success. Black women continuously navigate systems that were never intended for them while playing by a set of rules they never agreed to or were ever trained for. In this book, Francine Parham shares her knowledge as a Black woman and a former global executive of two major corporations on how to move up in the workplace while maintaining a sense of sanity. The key skill--one that Black women are rarely taught--is understanding the power dynamics within your organization and learning how to shift the power to your advantage. Parham shows how to use your voice, strategically build the right relationships, and support others once you have achieved a powerful position--tools any woman can use to increase her power and ensure a successful, fulfilling career. Parham says Black women are already empowered; there is no shortage of qualified professional Black women in the talent pipeline. But it does not feel empowering when organizations force Black women to work every day to overcome biases, discriminatory institutional practices, and unwritten rules of power at play that hinder their career development and professional advancement. Please Sit Over There honors the painstaking work being undertaken to deconstruct broken institutions and demonstrates how Black women can achieve their goals while those institutions still exist-effectively opening doors for all women of color.

Book Screen Comedy and Online Audiences

Download or read book Screen Comedy and Online Audiences written by Inger-Lise Kalviknes Bore and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of why we laugh (or don't laugh) has intrigued scholars since antiquity. This book contributes to that debate by exploring how we evaluate screen comedy. What kinds of criteria do we use to judge films and TV shows that are meant to be funny? And what might that have to do with our social and cultural backgrounds, or with wider cultural ideas about film, TV, comedy, quality and entertainment? The book examines these questions through a study of audience responses posted to online facilities such as Twitter, Facebook, review sites, blogs and message boards. Bore’s analysis of these responses considers a broad range of issues, including how audiences perceive the idea of "national" comedy; what they think of female comedians; how they evaluate romcoms, sitcoms and web comedy; what they think is acceptable to joke about; what comedy fans get excited about; how fans interact with star comedians; and what comedy viewers really despise. The book demonstrates some of the ways in which we can adapt theories of humour and comedy to examine the practices of contemporary screen audiences, while offering new insights into how they negotiate the opportunities and constrictions of different online facilities to share their views and experiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open inquiry and engagement with a diverse range of views are long-cherished and central tenets of higher education and are pivotal to innovation and knowledge creation. Yet, free inquiry on American campuses is hampered by a climate that constrains teaching, research, and overall discourse. In Unassailable Ideas, Ilana Redstone and John Villasenor examine the dominant belief system on American campuses, its uncompromising enforcement through social media, and the consequences for higher education. They argue that two trends in particular--the emergent role of social media in limiting academic research and knowledge discovery and a campus culture increasingly intolerant to diverse views and open inquiry--are fundamentally reshaping higher education. Redstone and Villasenor further identify and explain how three well-intentioned unwritten rules regarding identity define the current campus climate. They present myriad case studies illustrating the resulting impact on education, knowledge creation-and, increasingly the world beyond campus. They also provide a set of recommendations to build a new campus climate that would be more tolerant toward diverse perspectives and open inquiry. An insightful analysis of the current state of academia, Unassailable Ideas highlights an environment in higher education that forecloses entire lines of research, entire discussions, and entire ways of conducting classroom teaching.

Download or read book The Unwritten Rules of the Road written by Michael A. Dantley and published by . This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true story of love and survival, this book profiles the lives of a couple who unwittingly become involved in a most unusual experience. Life was idyllic on the island paradise known as Roatan, located some 35 miles off the North Coast of Honduras, in the Western Caribbean Sea. Two unsuspecting people are hoodwinked into allowing a rascal cat into their lives and hearts where he soon becomes master of the house. A brainstorm of an idea brings four very young kittens, (otherwise condemned to certain death), onto the scene to complicate a once simple existence. Nature subsequently challenges the very lives of all the people on the island as Hurricane Mitch, a category 5 storm, hovers off shore for five days, with sustained winds of 140 miles per hour, creating thirty foot seas and torrential rains. It quickly became a life threatening situation. The "Storm of the Century" devastates the Bay Islands of Honduras and then crosses the entire Central American isthmus twice, leaving massive death and destruction behind before exiting through Guatemala and the Gulf of Mexico. The aftermath of this disaster is as frightening as the storm, but fate plays a friendly role in this frightening survival.
