Book excerpt: A gay teenage American vampire adjusts to life at a prestigious—and mysterious—English boarding school and its dangerous headmaster in this YA adventure. Archangel Academy is more than a school to Michael Howard. Within its majestic buildings and serene English grounds, he’s found friends, new love, and a place that feels more like home than Nebraska ever did. But the most important gift of Archangel Academy is immortality . . . Life as a just-made vampire is challenging for Michael, even with Ronan, an experienced vamp, to guide him. Michael’s abilities are still raw and unpredictable. To add to the turmoil, the ancient feud between rival vampire species is sending ripples of discord through the school. And beneath the new headmaster’s charismatic front lies a powerful and very personal agenda. Yet the mysteries lurking around the Academy pale in comparison to the secrets emerging from Michael’s past. And choosing the wrong person to trust—or to love—could lead to an eternity of regret . . .

Book True and False Recovered Memories

Download or read book True and False Recovered Memories written by Robert F. Belli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-18 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the 1990s, the contentious “memory wars” divided psychologists into two schools of thought: that adults’ recovered memories of childhood abuse were generally true, or that they were generally not, calling theories, therapies, professional ethics, and survivor credibility into question. More recently, findings from cognitive psychology and neuroimaging as well as new theoretical constructs are bringing balance, if not reconciliation, to this polarizing debate. Based on presentations at the 2010 Nebraska Symposium on Motivation, True and False Recovered Memories: Toward a Reconciliation of the Debate assembles an expert panel of scholars, professors, and clinicians to update and expand research and knowledge about the complex interaction of cognitive, emotional, and motivational factors involved in remembering—and forgetting—severe childhood trauma. Contrasting viewpoints, elaborations on existing ideas, challenges to accepted models, and intriguing experimental data shed light on such issues as the intricacies of identity construction in memory, post-trauma brain development, and the role of suggestive therapeutic techniques in creating false memories. Taken together, these papers add significant new dimensions to a rapidly evolving field. Featured in the coverage: The cognitive neuroscience of true and false memories. Toward a cognitive-neurobiological model of motivated forgetting. The search for repressed memory. A theoretical framework for understanding recovered memory experiences. Cognitive underpinnings of recovered memories of childhood sexual abuse. Motivated forgetting and misremembering: perspectives from betrayal trauma theory. Clinical and cognitive psychologists on all sides of the debate will welcome True and False Recovered Memories as a trustworthy reference, an impartial guide to ongoing controversies, and a springboard for future inquiry.

Book Re Constructing Grassroots Holocaust Memory

Download or read book Re Constructing Grassroots Holocaust Memory written by Irina Rebrova and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of the book is to allocate the grass roots initiatives of remembering the Holocaust victims in a particular region of Russia which has a very diverse ethnic structure and little presence of Jews at the same time. It aims to find out how such individual initiatives correspond to the official Russian hero-orientated concept of remembering the Second World war with almost no attention to the memory of war victims, including Holocaust victims. North Caucasus became the last address of thousands of Soviet Jews, both evacuees and locals. While there was almost no attention paid to the Holocaust victims in the official Soviet propaganda in the postwar period, local activists and historians together with the members of Jewish communities preserved Holocaust memory by installing small obelisks at the killing sites, writing novels and making documentaries, teaching about the Holocaust at schools and making small thematic exhibitions in the local and school museums. Individual types of grass roots activities in the region on remembering Holocaust victims are analyzed in each chapter of the book.

Book excerpt: In this collection of essays, a range of established and early-career scholars explore a variety of different perspectives on Oliver Cromwell's involvement with Ireland, in particular his military campaign of 1649-1650. In England and Wales Cromwell is regarded as a figure of national importance; in Ireland his reputation remains highly controversial. The essays gathered together here provide a fresh take on his Irish campaign, reassessing the backdrop and context of the prevailing siege warfare strategy and offering new insights into other major players such as Henry Ireton and the Marquis of Ormond. Other topics include, but are not limited to, the Cromwellian land settlement, deportation of prisoners and popular memory of Cromwell in Ireland. CONTRIBUTORS: Martyn Bennett, Heidi J. Coburn, Sarah Covington, John Cunningham, Eamon Darcy, David Farr, Padraig Lenihan, Alan Marshall, Nick Poyntz, Tom Reilly, James Scott Wheeler

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dominion War -- as seen in seasons 5,6 and 7 of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine -- introduced a major story arc to the Star Trek universe and brought the Federation closer than it had ever been to total annihilation. Against a background of conflict and chaos, alliances were made and broken, ideals compromised for the sake of survival, fortunes shifted and lives irrevocably shattered as the series explored the impact of war on combatant and civilian alike. It took countless lives and numerous acts of heroism and sacrifice on the part of many people -- human and Klingon, Bajoran and Romulan; yes, and Cardassian too -- to save the day and neutralize the threat of the Dominion. Now top Star Trek authors present twelve new stories of those whose courage helped to win the war, among them Captain Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation and Captain Calhoun from Star Trek: New Frontier. Featured authors include Greg Cox, Peter David, Kevin Dilmore, Michael Jan Friedman, Dave Galanter, Robert Greenberger, Heather Jarman, Jeffrey Lang, David Mack, Andy Mangels, Michael A. Martin, Josepha Sherman, Susan Shwartz, Dayton Ward and Howard Weinstein.
