Download or read book Dematerialized written by Joseph DiSomma and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a bitterly cold night in January of 1979, the heiress to the Sheraton Hotel fortune vanished without a trace. This is the true story of Marcia Moore—daring author, yoga teacher, astrologer, and occultist. She experimented with the psychotropic anesthetic ketamine, in the same vein as Timothy Leary’s consciousness-expanding research with LSD. Her interest in psychedelics has only added to the wild theories about Moore’s mysterious death in the four decades since. Psychics, astrologers, and armchair sleuths have all had their say. Now it’s time to set the record straight. In 1980, famous true crime author Ann Rule referred to Marcia’s disappearance as “probably the strangest case I have ever written about. One day, there may be answers.” After years of painstaking research, this book reveals those answers about a case as multifaceted and intriguing as the woman who perished so tragically. This is the story of a bold woman, raised well-to-do and just a stone’s throw from Walden Pond, who took the road less traveled—and paid for it with her life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking appreciation of Dylan as a literary practitioner WINNER OF THE ELIZABETH AGEE PRIZE IN AMERICAN LITERATURE The literary establishment tends to regard Bob Dylan as an intriguing, if baffling, outsider. That changed overnight when Dylan was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature, challenging us to think of him as an integral part of our national and international literary heritage. No One to Meet: Imitation and Originality in the Songs of Bob Dylan places Dylan the artist within a long tradition of literary production and offers an innovative way of understanding his unique, and often controversial, methods of composition. In lucid prose, Raphael Falco demonstrates the similarity between what Renaissance writers called imitatio and the way Dylan borrows, digests, and transforms traditional songs. Although Dylan’s lyrical postures might suggest a post-Romantic, “avant-garde” consciousness, No One to Meet shows that Dylan’s creative process borrows from and creatively expands the methods used by classical and Renaissance authors. Drawing on numerous examples, including Dylan’s previously unseen manuscript excerpts and archival materials, Raphael Falco illuminates how the ancient process of poetic imitation, handed down from Greco-Roman antiquity, allows us to make sense of Dylan’s musical and lyrical technique. By placing Dylan firmly in the context of an age-old poetic practice, No One to Meet deepens our appreciation of Dylan’s songs and allows us to celebrate him as what he truly is: a great writer.

Book Arshile Gorky Beyond the Limit

Download or read book Arshile Gorky Beyond the Limit written by Parker Field and published by Hauser & Wirth Publishers. This book was released on 2022-02 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1946, the painter Arshile Gorky spent the summer at Crooked Run Farm, a country estate in Lincoln, Virginia. In this time, he drew feverishly, producing almost 300 drawings. These drawings included a study for what is now considered one of his most remarkable paintings, 'The Limit' (1947), a work that he described as the outcome of being ""so lonely, exasperated, and how to paint such empty space?so empty it's the limit."" Also among Gorky's artistic yield from the summer of 1946 were a group of related pieces that came to be referred to as the Virginia Summer drawings. During a 2020 conservation treatment on 'The Limit,' conservators discovered that nested behind it was another workman expressively painted canvas immediately recognizable by its relationship to the Virginia Summer drawings. 'Beyond The Limit' reveals this newly discovered painting, referred to as 'Untitled (Virginia Summer),' and its place in Gorky's oeuvre. Essays by Parker Field, Managing Director of the Arshile Gorky Foundation, and Pepe Karmel, Associate Professor Of Art History at New York University, are complemented by an illustrated chronology that piece together the hidden story of 'Untitled (Virginia Summer)' and what it signified for Gorky during this time of incredible creative output. The book's design encourages readers to unwrap 'The Limit' to discover 'Untitled (Virginia Summer),' and a series of brushstroke details positions readers close to the canvases of both works. Together with a plate section that presents both paintings, select drawings from the Virginia Summer series, and reference works, readers will have their own experience of discovering Arshile Gorky. Exhibition: Hauser & Wirth Gallery, Zurich, Switzerland (03.02. - 19.03.2022).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first survey of internationally acclaimed artist Pieter Vermeersch's work Pieter Vermeersch (Belgium, 1973) is well-known for his gradual wall paintings that create powerful visual experiences. Vermeersch combines painting with architecture and works on a variety of surfaces such as canvas, marble and photographs. Beyond the traditional borders of the canvas, his investigations result in large-scale spatial interventions that manipulate the space. Time, colour and space are the building blocks of his oeuvre: these concepts lie at the foundation of his gradual murals and architectural interventions. Variations presents a complete survey of Vermeersch's work, from the beginning of his career until his recent solo exhibition at M - Museum Leuven (March 15-August 11, 2019), and includes a broad selection of painted works (canvases, stones, photographs, walls), installations and sketches. Each signature of the book is dedicated to a particular work or aspect of Vermeersch's oeuvre. There will be seven different cover versions of the book, each printed in a different colour variation defined by the artist.

Book The Memoirs of Stockholm Sven

Download or read book The Memoirs of Stockholm Sven written by Nathaniel Ian Miller and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this "briskly entertaining" (New York Times Book Review), "transporting and wholly original" (People Magazine) novel, one man banishes himself to a solitary life in the Arctic Circle, and is saved by good friends, a loyal dog, and a surprise visit that changes everything. In 1916, Sven Ormson leaves a restless life in Stockholm to seek adventure in Svalbard, an Arctic archipelago where darkness reigns four months of the year and he might witness the splendor of the Northern Lights one night and be attacked by a polar bear the next. But his time as a miner ends when an avalanche nearly kills him, leaving him disfigured, and Sven flees even further, to an uninhabited fjord. There, with the company of a loyal dog, he builds a hut and lives alone, testing himself against the elements. The teachings of a Finnish fur trapper, along with encouraging letters from his family and a Scottish geologist who befriended him in the mining camp, get him through his first winter. Years into his routine isolation, the arrival of an unlikely visitor salves his loneliness, sparking a chain of surprising events that will bring Sven into a family of fellow castoffs and determine the course of the rest of his life. Written with wry humor and in prose as breathtaking as the stark landscape it evokes, The Memoirs of Stockholm Sven is a testament to the strength of our human bonds, reminding us that even in the most inhospitable conditions on the planet, we are not beyond the reach of love. #1 Indie Next Pick Finalist for the Vermont Book Award Longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize
