Book excerpt: This collection of sermons and theological essays by the beloved Victorian author explore the nature of God’s truth and how it is revealed to us. The Victorian author, poet, and theologian George MacDonald inspired some of the greatest writers of the early 20th century, including C.S. Lewis, who said MacDonald’s books were pivotal in leading him toward Christianity. But while MacDonald’s fiction remains popular—with such notable classics as Robert Falconer and At the Back of the North Wind—his theological nonfiction is often challenging for modern readers. Now MacDonald scholar and biographer Michael Phillips addresses this difficulty with this expertly edited edition of MacDonald’s sermons and essays about God’s truth. Each selection is accompanied by Phillips’s illuminating commentary, providing readers with an essential road map into the expansive world of George MacDonald’s theological writings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Be swept into the presence of God. It is not enough for the Christ-follower to hold a set of beliefs about Jesus, to cling tightly to doctrine, or interpretation, or knowledge. The transformative power of the Gospel is accessed through faith in Jesus, through union with God, and through a real experience of His love and nearness. George MacDonald's Unspoken Sermons are a series of written (but never publicly preached) sermons that guide the reader into a deeper relationship with God through profound encounters with Jesus Christ. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a 19th century Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister, most famous for his published allegorical fairy tales and novels. MacDonald was read and admired by many well-known theologians, including G.K. Chesterton, Oswald Chambers, and C.S. Lewis, who pointed to MacDonald as an inspirer and guide for their own faith and writings. Lewis said of MacDonald, "I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer, or more continually close, to the Spirit of Christ Himself." Through this collection of remarkable sermons, the reader will discover: A magnificent perspective on Christianity A sincere hunger for spiritual truth A deeper understanding of the Christian faith A clearer sense of God's will The very presence of the Living God The insights available in these pages speak directly to the heart, as a guide towards a deep, intimate, life-changing encounter with the indwelling presence of the living God.

Book The Complete Fairy Tales

Download or read book The Complete Fairy Tales written by George MacDonald and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George MacDonald occupied a major position in the intellectual life of his Victorian contemporaries. This volume brings together all eleven of his shorter fairy stories as well as his essay "The Fantastic Imagination". The subjects are those of traditional fantasy: good and wicked fairies, children embarking on elaborate quests, and journeys into unsettling dreamworlds. Within this familiar imaginative landscape, his children's stories were profoundly experimental, questioning the association of childhood with purity and innocence, and the need to separate fairy tale wonder from adult scepticism and disbelief.

Book excerpt: Unspoken Sermons By George Macdonald 'Although he wrote much beloved fiction, MacDonald's Unspoken Sermons is some of the most wonderful and profound literature a person can read.' 'And no sermon in Unspoken Sermons has had a more decisive impact upon me in this regard than the sermon Justice.' And he came to Capernaum: and, being in the house, he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way? But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves who should be the greatest. And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all. And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them, Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me; and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.--MARK ix. 33-37. Of this passage in the life of our Lord, the account given by St Mark is the more complete. But it may be enriched and its lesson rendered yet more evident from the record of St Matthew. "Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea." Book Unspoken Sermons Series I II and II

Download or read book Unspoken Sermons Series I II and II written by George MacDonald and published by . This book was released on 2019-12-30 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the kingdom of Christ? A rule of love, of truth-a rule of service. The king is the chief servant in it. "The kings of the earth have dominion: it shall not be so among you." "The Son of Man came to minister." "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." The great Workman is the great King, labouring for his own. So he that would be greatest among them, and come nearest to the King himself, must be the servant of all. It is like king like subject in the kingdom of heaven. No rule of force, as of one kind over another kind. It is the rule of kind, of nature, of deepest nature-of God. If, then, to enter into this kingdom, we must become children, the spirit of children must be its pervading spirit throughout, from lowly subject to lowliest king. The lesson added by St Luke to the presentation of the child is: "For he that is least among you all, the same shall be great." And St Matthew says: "Whosoever shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven." Hence the sign that passes between king and subject. The subject kneels in homage to the kings of the earth: the heavenly king takes his subject in his arms. This is the sign of the kingdom between them. This is the all-pervading relation of the kingdom. - Taken from "Unspoken Sermons" written by George MacDonald

Rolland Hein has done this task with extraordinary success. Here are more than thirty sermons made vitally alive for the contemporary reader." -E. Beatrice BatsonWheaton College "Here holiness is presented as so beautiful and necessary that we covet it as a man dying of thirst covets water.
