Book excerpt: No matter who you are, where you live, or what your life circumstances are, if you’ve gone through the teenage, you must remember the first time you’ve fallen in love. The time when you’ve created your own universe in your mind. The time when you used to fly high and high in your dreams. The time when you used to get butterflies in your stomach. The time when only a smile can melt your heart and a whiff can cure all your pains. But then we grew up and something is left behind, some words, some feelings, some emotions. Something that is left unspoken, the words that left unexpressed. People do move on in life but something remains there for always. Some of them just feel those vibes and some of them make those moments immortal by penning down their heart in form of poetries, writings and shayaris, in their diaries. The book is all about those feelings that are left unexpressed, some words that are left unspoken. Let’s take this moment to celebrate the journey of our lives, and dive into some stories penned down by some awesome co-authors.

Book Poetics and the Gift

Download or read book Poetics and the Gift written by Adam R. Rosenthal and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a broad, comparative approach, this study shows how the figure of the gift structures poetic discourse and does so from the age of Homer up through twenty-first century conceptual poetics. Beginning from a new interpretation of Derrida’s writings on the gift, Adam R. Rosenthal argues that this ambivalent figure names at one and the same time poetry’s most extreme aneconomic privilege and the point of its closest contact with the interested exchange of the market. In this way, the gift conducts material relays of patronage and theories of poetic origination, in genius, inspiration, and imagination. Poetics and the Gift capitalizes on this double function in order to read material historical accounts of poetry alongside philosophical and poetic ones. By way of his original reading of Derrida’s work in Given Time and ‘Economimesis’, Rosenthal offers a novel account of ‘gift poetics’ and a new understanding of what makes poetry ‘poetry’.

Book The Unspoken Rules

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named one of 10 Best New Management Books for 2022 by Thinkers50 A Wall Street Journal Bestseller "...this guide provides readers with much more than just early careers advice; it can help everyone from interns to CEOs." — a Financial Times top title You've landed a job. Now what? No one tells you how to navigate your first day in a new role. No one tells you how to take ownership, manage expectations, or handle workplace politics. No one tells you how to get promoted. The answers to these professional unknowns lie in the unspoken rules—the certain ways of doing things that managers expect but don't explain and that top performers do but don't realize. The problem is, these rules aren't taught in school. Instead, they get passed down over dinner or from mentor to mentee, making for an unlevel playing field, with the insiders getting ahead and the outsiders stumbling along through trial and error. Until now. In this practical guide, Gorick Ng, a first-generation college student and Harvard career adviser, demystifies the unspoken rules of work. Ng distills the wisdom he has gathered from over five hundred interviews with professionals across industries and job types about the biggest mistakes people make at work. Loaded with frameworks, checklists, and talking points, the book provides concrete strategies you can apply immediately to your own situation and will help you navigate inevitable questions, such as: How do I manage my time in the face of conflicting priorities? How do I build relationships when I’m working remotely? How do I ask for help without looking incompetent or lazy? The Unspoken Rules is the only book you need to perform your best, stand out from your peers, and set yourself up for a fulfilling career.

Book The Whuffie Factor

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tara Hunt
  • Publisher : Crown Currency
  • Release : 2009-04-21
  • ISBN : 0307449416
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book The Whuffie Factor written by Tara Hunt and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book that catches the crest of Web 2.0 and shows how any business can harness its power by increasing whuffie, the store of social capital that is the currency of the digital world. Everyone knows about blogs and social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, and has heard about someone who has used them to grow a huge customer base. Everyone wants to be hands-on, grassroots, and interactive, but what does this mean? And more to the point, how do you do it? As one who has actually launched a company using the power of online communities, and who now advises large and small companies, Tara Hunt (named by the San Francisco Chronicle, along with luminaries Jimmy Wales and Tim O’Reilly, as a digital Utopian) is the perfect person to do this book. While The Whuffie Factor will traverse the landscape of Web 2.0 and show how to become a player, it is not just another book about online marketing. People see the huge business potential of the online world and the first impulse is: Let’s throw a bunch of money at it. To which Tara Hunt says: “Stop! Money isn’t the capital of choice in online communities, it is whuffie–social capital–and how to raise it is at the heart of this book.” In the Web 2.0 world, market capital flows from having high social capital. Without whuffie you lose your connections and any recommendations you make will be seen as spam–met with negative reactions and a loss of social capital. The Whuffie Factor provides businesspeople with a strategic map and specific tactics for the constantly evolving, elusive, and, to some, strange world of online communities. By connecting with your customers through community interaction, you’ll raise your social capital, create demand, and sell more product. Consumer loyalty is a direct result of whuffie. With great stories of online business successes and cautionary tales of major missteps–recording industry, anyone?–Tara Hunt reveals how social networking has more influence over buying decisions than any other marketing tool and how your business can tap into the vast world of Web 2.0 to build an unshakable foundation for twenty-first-century-style online success. For those without millions–even thousands–to throw around, here is a fresh perspective for using social networks to help build a business whether you are a start-up or a Fortune 500 giant. Even those in big rich companies need to learn how to be effective and not waste their money. For them–as well as the entrepreneur–The Whuffie Factor is an eye-opening guide to a world they probably don’t understand all that well.

Book Dedicated To You

Download or read book Dedicated To You written by Candy Hwa and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only Human Daniel James, the sole heir to his mother’s business, Gloria Financial Group, leaves his hometown of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia and moves to the smaller city of Adelaide where he enrols into University of South Australia. There he meets a girl, unlike any other. At first sight, she avoids him, because he is rich and all his annoying fan girls are exceedingly loud and selfish. As time goes on, the girl feels drawn to Daniel. When they officially start dating, one obstacle just happens to get in the way... Memorable Quotes: - “We are renting this apartment. We never seem to have enough money because the prices just keep rising. People just want to make money, they do not think twice about the disadvantaged.” - Stalkers NEVER have happy endings. Flora is right; you are a VERY selfish person. You want her all to yourself and not share her with anyone, not even her brothers. They are a family; they are allowed to be together. YOU RUINED EVERYTHING IN HER TIME DURING HIGH SCHOOL, she is NOT safe with you around. You do not allow her to do things without your supervision, which is abuse and controlling behaviour. If you love her, you should be able to trust her! You obviously do not show that you do. YOU CANNOT EVEN MAKE FLORA SMILE FOR THE SEVEN YEARS YOU HAVE LOVED HER, NOT EVEN ONCE (he was shocked at these words)!” Fly High Dream. Hope. Fly. “When you have a Goal, fulfill it. Why? Because it gives you a purpose in life.” Three people, two boys and one girl, have the most beautiful singing voices in the whole school. They love singing but no one likes their songs because they do not sing English but so what? If it is their dream to become singers why let others block their path to success..? Memorable Quotes: - “Thanks Bradley. It is not likely people will like us because we sing in different languages. Why can people not accept everyone is different?” “Because people only like what they like. They do not care about what everyone else likes.” - “I was afraid that you would think I was a cry-baby.” She answered quietly, ”I was distracting my father from the road and he ran into another vehicle. Both my parents died almost instantly from the crash and I was the sole survivor, not even the other vehicle’s passengers survived from the crash.” - “My parents were very lovable people, they had many friends.” Ryan began, “Nearly everyone in our neighbourhood knew them. We were a wealthy family that lived well with all the other wealthy people. My parents were murdered by being stabbed repetitively then shot twice each. There were two murderers but only one was caught. The other committed suicide to avoid going into prison. They deserve the prison time for taking away my parents but I have lived life as they had, by doing the one thing that I am happy doing, singing. Murderers deserve a life sentence for murder, not just a set period.” - “I want to show images of what happens at war, just the like original music video to this song. It would teach arrogant country leaders that war solves nothing. All it does is hurt others. Even though people are fighting for their countries, it makes things worse by hurting others. Too bad people do not listen to foreign songs. A lot of foreign songs have powerful messages but people are too ignorant to give them a try.” Bradley proudly said. Fond Memories When the love of your life forgets who you are when they wake up, how would you feel? Miserable or desperate to win them back before someone else did? That is how Jonathan James felt. It got even more difficult when his brother falls in love with the same girl... Memorable Quotes: - “Wealthy people are so arrogant. Just because they can have anything they want, they take advantage of that and act all ‘high and mighty’. They treat everyone who is considered lower than them to be scums or people unworthy of their attention. Why do people only like wealthy people? They are not the best type of people anyway

Book Schoolishness

  • Author : Susan D. Blum
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2024-05-15
  • ISBN : 1501774190
  • Pages : 426 pages

Download or read book Schoolishness written by Susan D. Blum and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Schoolishness, Susan D. Blum continues her journey as an anthropologist and educator. The author defines "schoolishness" as educational practices that emphasize packaged "learning," unimaginative teaching, uniformity, constant evaluation by others, arbitrary forms, predetermined time, and artificial boundaries, resulting in personal and educational alienation, dependence, and dread. Drawing on critical, progressive, and feminist pedagogy in conversation with the anthropology of learning, and building on the insights of her two previous books Blum proposes less-schoolish ways of learning in ten dimensions, to lessen the mismatch between learning in school and learning in the wild. She asks, if learning is our human "superpower," why is it so difficult to accomplish in school? In every chapter Blum compares the fake learning of schoolishness with successful examples of authentic learning, including in her own courses, which she scrutinizes critically. Schoolishness is not a pedagogical how-to book, but a theory-based phenomenology of institutional education. It has moral, psychological, and educational arguments against schoolishness that, as Blum notes, "rhymes with foolishness."

Book Unspoken

Download or read book Unspoken written by Cheryl Glenn and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our talkative Western culture, speech is synonymous with authority and influence while silence is frequently misheard as passive agreement when it often signifies much more. In her groundbreaking exploration of silence as a significant rhetorical art, Cheryl Glenn articulates the ways in which tactical silence can be as expressive and strategic an instrument of human communication as speech itself. Drawing from linguistics, phenomenology, feminist studies, anthropology, ethnic studies, and literary analysis, Unspoken: A Rhetoric of Silence theorizes both a cartography and grammar of silence. By mapping the range of spaces silence inhabits, Glenn offers a new interpretation of its complex variations and uses. Glenn contextualizes the rhetoric of silence by focusing on selected contemporary examples. Listening to silence and voice as gendered positions, she analyzes the highly politicized silences and words of a procession of figures she refers to as "all the President's women," including Anita Hill, Lani Guiner, Gennifer Flowers, and Chelsea Clinton. She also turns an investigative ear to the cultural taciturnity attributed to various Native American groups--Navajo, Apache, Hopi, and Pueblo--and its true meaning. Through these examples, Glenn reinforces the rhetorical contributions of the unspoken, codifying silence as a rhetorical device with the potential to deploy, defer, and defeat power. Unspoken concludes by suggesting opportunities for further research into silence and silencing, including music, religion, deaf communities, cross-cultural communication, and the circulation of silence as a creative resource within the college classroom and for college writers.

Download or read book The Long Space written by Peter Hitchcock and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resurgence of "world literature" as a category of study seems to coincide with what we understand as globalization, but how does postcolonial writing fit into this picture? Beyond the content of this novel or that, what elements of postcolonial fiction might challenge the assumption that its main aim is to circulate native information globally? The Long Space provides a fresh look at the importance of postcolonial writing by examining how it articulates history and place both in content and form. Not only does it offer a new theoretical model for understanding decolonization's impact on duration in writing, but through a series of case studies of Guyanese, Somali, Indonesian, and Algerian writers, it urges a more protracted engagement with time and space in postcolonial narrative. Although each writer—Wilson Harris, Nuruddin Farah, Pramoedya Ananta Toer, and Assia Djebar—explores a unique understanding of postcoloniality, each also makes a more general assertion about the difference of time and space in decolonization. Taken together, they herald a transnationalism beyond the contaminated coordinates of globalization as currently construed.

The more he gets to know Charlotte, the more interested he becomes, an interest encouraged by those closest to her. But nothing else is working in his favor--she's decided she is single for life, she struggles with her faith, and she's willing to forego a huge inheritance to keep her privacy.
