Download or read book Unrest in the Middle East and North Africa Ramifications for U S Homeland Security written by U. S. House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security and published by . This book was released on 2011-04-06 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I look forward to hearing from today's witnesses on the on-going unrest in the Middle East and North Africa and its impact on U.S. homeland security. Just about a month ago, on March 2, this subcommittee met to hear testimony of the threat posed by al-Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula to the U.S. homeland. One of the key takeaways from that hearing was the level of instability in Yemen and the surrounding areas. A lot has changed in just 1 month. Unfortunately, many of the predictions that we heard from the witnesses have come to fruition in a very short period of time, including a teetering government on the brink of collapse in Yemen and a decrease in counterterrorism cooperation.

Book Seven Pillars

Download or read book Seven Pillars written by Michael Rubin and published by AEI Press. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, US foreign policy in the Middle East has been on autopilot: Seek Arab-Israeli peace, fight terrorism, and urge regimes to respect human rights. Every US administration puts its own spin on these initiatives, but none has successfully resolved the region’s fundamental problems. In Seven Pillars: What Really Causes Instability in the Middle East? a bipartisan group of leading experts representing several academic and policy disciplines unravel the core causes of instability in the Middle East and North Africa. Why have some countries been immune to the Arab Spring? Which governments enjoy the most legitimacy and why? With more than half the region under 30 years of age, why does education and innovation lag? How do resource economies, crony capitalism, and inequality drive conflict? Are ethnic and sectarian fault lines the key factor, or are these more products of political and economic instability? And what are the wellsprings of extremism that threaten not only the United States but, more profoundly, the people of the region? The answers to these questions should help policymakers and students of the region understand the Middle East on its own terms, rather than just through a partisan or diplomatic lens. Understanding the pillars of instability in the region can allow the United States and its allies to rethink their own priorities, adjust policy, recalibrate their programs, and finally begin to chip away at core challenges facing the Middle East. The series also includes a subject index and other indices that guide the user through this complex area of the law. Volume 123, Global Stability and U.S. National Security, includes documents that illuminate instability concerns in key regions of the world and offer insights into how the lack of stability negatively affects U.S. interests, as well as the interests of other nations. Book Foreign Policy Begins at Home

Download or read book Foreign Policy Begins at Home written by Richard N Haass and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A concise, comprehensive guide to America's critical policy choices at home and overseas . . . without a partisan agenda, but with a passion for solutions designed to restore our country's strength and enable us to lead." -- Madeleine K. Albright A rising China, climate change, terrorism, a nuclear Iran, a turbulent Middle East, and a reckless North Korea all present serious challenges to America's national security. But it depends even more on the United States addressing its burgeoning deficit and debt, crumbling infrastructure, second class schools, and outdated immigration system. While there is currently no great rival power threatening America directly, how long this strategic respite lasts, according to Council on Foreign Relations President Richard N. Haass, will depend largely on whether the United States puts its own house in order. Haass lays out a compelling vision for restoring America's power, influence, and ability to lead the world and advocates for a new foreign policy of Restoration that would require the US to limit its involvement in both wars of choice, and humanitarian interventions. Offering essential insight into our world of continual unrest, this new edition addresses the major foreign and domestic debates since hardcover publication, including US intervention in Syria, the balance between individual privacy and collective security, and the continuing impact of the sequester.

Book The Rise of Russia The Turning Point for Russian Foreign Policy

Download or read book The Rise of Russia The Turning Point for Russian Foreign Policy written by Keir Giles and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-08-26 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a detailed and precise analysis of the rise of Russian foreign policy in this decade. Russia's military interventions in Ukraine from 2014, and Syria from 2015, caused widespread surprise among Western policy communities including the United States. However, these interventions represented the culmination of two well-established trends that had been clearly identified by Russia-watchers over preceding years. These were first, a mounting perception of direct threat against Russia from the West, and second, Russia's own greatly increased capability for military or other action to respond to this perceived threat. In addition to the examination of Russia's use of military force in Ukraine and Syria, this book gives a complete insight into Russian diplomacy by analyzing the interference into the U.S. presidential elections, engagement with Latin America and interests in Sub-Saharan Africa.
