Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unmade in Heaven: A Play in Four Acts "Unmade in Heaven" was not written as an argument for or against the Roman Catholic faith. The subject simply presented itself to me as one of great human and dramatic significance and susceptible of powerful theatrical treatment. Whether its full effect is brought out by the bare and direct method of handling that I have adopted is doubtful; but I am certain that treated by a capable dramatist it could not fail to move an audience deeply. It is true that the average Protestant American playgoer has not much interest in the monastic life nor in the priestly vocation. The idea of certainly breaking a girl's heart for the sake of doubtfully benefiting humanity through the Church will offend most Protestant girls as well as Protestant men. They may be offended, but I do not see how they can fail to be interested, if the problem is presented in the shape of actual flesh and blood. For myself, I love and honour the Catholic Church, with certain reservations which it is not necessary to discuss here. I believe that the greatest need in American life today is the need of God. Book Showing of Love

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julian (of Norwich)
  • Publisher : Liturgical Press
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9780814651698
  • Pages : 172 pages

Download or read book Showing of Love written by Julian (of Norwich) and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Showing of Love, Julia Bolton Holloway provides a complete translation of Julian of Norwich's ground-breaking text, opening windows of insight into her medieval world. As a female mystic and theologian who was uniquely recognized (in a time when most women were not) for her holiness, Julian of Norwich also came to be known as a catechist, prophet, and spiritual director. Showing of Love records her own healing encounter with divine love and has for many centuries been a source of healing and inspiration for others. Readers of Julian's work find her belief that God sits in our soul as a fair city to be of profound value. That city is every city, Mary its queen, Christ its king. Julian offers these layers in rich text and variant readings. Julian dedicated years of her life to shaping Showing of Love, at the end rewriting it to preserve it from censorship. The anchoress lived in St. Julian's churchyard in Norwich. Her text was saved from destruction by nuns in Brigittine and Benedictine convents, first in England, then in exile after the Reformation. Julian's writings were later published by the Benedictines in 1670. They reveal her strong links with Benedict that continue to have lasting value for readers today. Includes two-color ink on inside pages. Julia Bolton Holloway, PhD, is a vowed hermit living in Florence, Italy. She has published seventeen other works on important historical figures.

Book Revelations of Divine Love

Download or read book Revelations of Divine Love written by Julian of Norwich and published by Ixia Press. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourteenth-century anchorite known as Julian of Norwich offered fervent prayers for a deeper understanding of Christ's passion. The holy woman's petitions were answered with a series of divine revelations that she called "shewings." Her mystic visions revealed Christ's sufferings with extreme intensity, but they also confirmed God's constant love for humanity and infinite capacity for forgiveness. Julian of Norwich's Revelations of Divine Love have had a lasting influence on Christian thought. Written in immediate, compelling terms, her experiences remain among the most original and accessible expressions of medieval mysticism. This edition contains both the short text, which is mainly an account of the shewings and Julian's initial analysis of their meaning, and the long text, completed some 20 years later and offering daringly speculative interpretations.

Book Looking through a Glass Bible

Download or read book Looking through a Glass Bible written by A.K.M. Adam and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some biblical interpreters’ imaginations extend only as far as outlandish source theories or esoteric hypothetical audiences. The interpretive energies let loose in Glasgow over the past decade or so, however, have produced a cadre of interpreters who defy the disciplinary mandates of biblical criticisms in favour of reading the Bible with imaginations both careful and carefree. Infused with literary, political, art-critical, cinematic, liturgical and other interests, these essays display interpretive verve freed from the anxiety of disciplines — with closely observed insights, critical engagement with biblical texts, and vivid inspiration from the cultural world within which they are set. Here there is no "gap" between world and text, but the intimate congeniality of close, dear, comfortable interpretive friends. Contributors: Ben Morse, Hugh Pyper, Alastair Hunter, Hannah Strømmen, Jonathan C. P. Birch, Anna Fisk, Kuloba Wabyanga Robert, Samuel Tongue, A. K. M. Adam, Abigail Pelham, and the Religarts Collective (with Yvonne Sherwood).
