Book excerpt: A full-time rabbi becomes a part-time sleuth when three suspicious deaths arise in this cozy mystery by the author of Chanukah Guilt. Rabbi Aviva Cohen has her hands full with Passover preparations, she certainly has no time to deal with anything else. Yet tragedy soon changes her plans when two members of the congregation are found dead. Their cause of death is believed to be accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, but Aviva is not so sure. Soon after, her niece’s partner is suspected in a hit-and-run death. While Aviva is certain she’s innocent, the amateur sleuth can’t overlook the body-sized dent in the hood of her SUV. Digging into the two cases, Aviva uncovers a surprising connection between them, as well as a heap of disturbing criminal activity. Now she must quickly sift through the mishegoss to find out the truth before death strikes again . . . “Aviva is a great character, full of fun, somebody you’d feel comfortable hanging out with. Even though there are many mentions of Jewish tradition, non-Jews won’t feel bombarded with too much information or miss any good clues along the way.” —Kings River Life Magazine

Book Anti Judaism and Christian Orthodoxy

Download or read book Anti Judaism and Christian Orthodoxy written by Christine Shepardson and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical reading of Ephrem's numerous poetic writings demonstrates that his sharp anti-Jewish and anti-Judaizing language helped to solidify a pro-Nicene definition of Christian orthodoxy, cutting off from that community in the very act of defining it his so-called Judaizing and Arian Christian opponents, both of whom he accused of being more like Jews than Christians. Through carefully crafted rhetoric, Ephrem constructed for his audience new social and theological parameters that reshaped the religious landscape of his community.

Book Ancient Bible Feasts

  • Author : Albert Bailey
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2015-10-15
  • ISBN : 1504955447
  • Pages : 101 pages

Download or read book Ancient Bible Feasts written by Albert Bailey and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Bible Feasts opens hidden Bible truths concerning Israel, Christ, and the church. These seven feasts given in their order and days of the year in Leviticus 23 are symbolic of the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, the decent of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost; the future rapture of the church; and the great tribulation and second advent of Christ; concluding with His thousand-year millennial reign here on earth. Other books written about these feasts deal with the same events, but none has gone into detail or explained the meaning of the celebrations and sacrifices God commanded the Israelite's to celebrate so many years ago. Dr. Bailey explains the meaning of certain numbers in the Scriptures and shows their importance in these feasts and how these numbers prove the accuracy of the fulfillment of these feasts. He also prove from Scripture that Jesus Christ died at the time the Passover Lamb was killed in Egypt; the meaning of the blood being put on the doors of the houses that the Israelite's were in; that Jesus resurrected at the same time the last Israelite came out of the Red Sea centuries earlier; that the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples the exact time God came down on Mt. Sinai some fourteen hundred years earlier. He also explains the sacrifice at Mt. Sinai that points to the fact that Jew and Gentile will become one in Christ. This book is a treasure to all students of the Holy Scriptures.

Book Depicting Orthodoxy in the Russian Middle Ages

Download or read book Depicting Orthodoxy in the Russian Middle Ages written by Ágnes Kriza and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image of Divine Wisdom, traditionally associated with the Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod, is an innovation of the fifteenth century. The icon represents the winged, royal, red-faced Sophia flanked by the Mother of God and John the Baptist. Although the image has a contemporaneous commentary, and although it exercised a profound influence on Russian cultural history, its meaning, together with the dating and localisation of the first appearance of the iconography, has remained an art-historical conundrum. By exploring the message, roots, function, and historical context of the creation of the first, most emblematic and enigmatic Russian allegorical iconography, Depicting Orthodoxy in the Russian Middle Ages deciphers the meaning of this icon. In contrast to previous interpretations, Kriza argues that the winged Sophia is the personification of the Orthodox Church. The Novgorod Wisdom icon represents the Church of Hagia Sophia, that is, Orthodoxy, as it was perceived in fifteenth-century Rus. Depicting Orthodoxy asserts that the icon, together with its commentary, was a visual-textual response to the Union of Florence between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, signed in 1439 but rejected by the Russians in 1441. This interpretation is based on detailed interdisciplinary research, drawing on philology, art history, theology, and history. Kriza's study challenges some key assumptions concerning the relevance of Church Schism of 1054, the polemics between the Greeks and the Latins about the bread of Eucharist, and the role of the Union of Florence in the history of Russian art. In particular, by studying both well- and lesser-known works of art alongside overlooked textual evidence, this volume investigates how the Christian Church and its true faith were defined and visualized in Rus and Byzantium throughout the centuries.

Aviva Cohen is a fifty-something, twice-divorced rabbi living an uneventful life in southern New Jersey. Although her family is unconventional, her days are otherwise routine. Services, religious education, and counseling mostly. She also officiates the occasional funeral . . . But the funeral of unpopular real estate tycoon William Phillips is very out of the ordinary. At the end of the service, two family members ask Aviva for help, saying that Phillips was murdered. Aviva dismisses their claims but is shocked when one of them is later found dead from an apparent suicide. Riddled with guilt and suspicious of the death, Aviva puts her skills as a yenta to good use. Her search for answers, unfortunately, has her crossing paths with her first ex-husband, the new chief of police. Plus, if Aviva’s not careful, the next funeral she attends might be her own . . . “Lots of fun!” —Midwest Book Review “Schneider succeeds in blending the complex life of a congregational spiritual leader with that of [a] first-rate detective, family member, confidant, friend, human being and even yenta (nosy body).” —San Diego Jewish World “Chanukah Guilt weaves Jewish culture and mystery in a delightful blend. . . .
