Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Tennessee Bulletin; June, 1918: College of Dentistry, Memphis, Tennessee; Forty-First Session, 1918-1919 The College of Dentistry of the University of Tennessee was founded in Nashville in 1878 and is, therefore, the pioneer dental school of the Southwest. The work Of this College was conducted in Nashville until 1911, when the Trustees of the University determined to take advantage of the superior clinical facilities of Memphis by removing to that point its Colleges of Dentistry and Medicine. At the same time a union was effected between this College and the College of Dental Surgery of the University of Memphis by which the equipment and faculties of the two schools were merged in the interest of increased efficiency. The remarkable recent progress of the science and art of Dental Sur gery and its recognition as a specialty of medicine have rendered it neces sary to increase the facilities by which the student of dentistry may obtain instruction in the fundamental subjects which un'derlie all medical science as well as in the more specialized branches. On account of its relationship with the College of Medicine of the University of Tennessee, the College of Dentistry is particularly well equipped in this respect, being able thus to secure the teaching services of full time expert teachers in these fundamental subjects. Book excerpt: Pinson Mounds: Middle Woodland Ceremonialism in the Midsouth is a comprehensive overview and reinterpretation of the largest Middle Woodland mound complex in the Southeast. Located in west Tennessee about ten miles south of Jackson, the Pinson Mounds complex includes at least thirteen mounds, a geometric earthen embankment, and contemporary short-term occupation areas within an area of about four hundred acres. A unique feature of Pinson Mounds is the presence of five large, rectangular platform mounds from eight to seventy-two feet in height. Around A.D. 100, Pinson Mounds was a pilgrimage center that drew visitors from well beyond the local population and accommodated many distinct cultural groups and people of varied social stations. Stylistically nonlocal ceramics have been found in virtually every excavated locality, all together representing a large portion of the Southeast. Along with an overview of this important and unique mound complex, Pinson Mounds also provides a reassessment of roughly contemporary centers in the greater Midsouth and Lower Mississippi Valley and challenges past interpretations of the Hopewell phenomenon in the region.
