Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the center of what was once the tallgrass prairie, Iowa has stood out for clearing the land and becoming one of the most productive agricultural states in the nation. But its success is challenged by multiple issues including but not limited to a decline in union representation of meatpacking workers; lack of demographic diversity; the advent of job-replacing mechanization; growing income inequality; negative contributions to and effects of climate change and environmental hazards. To become green, fair, and prosperous, Connerly argues that Iowa must reckon with its past and the fact that its farm economy continues to pollute waterways, while remaining utterly unprepared for climate change. Iowa must recognize ways in which it can bolster its residents’ standard of living and move away from its demographic tradition of whiteness. For development to be sustainable, society must balance it with environmental protection and social justice. Connerly provides a crucial roadmap for how Iowans can move forward and achieve this balance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barret Baumgart’s literary debut presents a haunting and deeply personal portrait of civilization poised at the precipice, a picture of humanity caught between its deepest past and darkest future. In the fall of 2013, during the height of California’s historic drought, Baumgart toured the remote military base, NAWS China Lake, near Death Valley, California. His mother, the survivor of a recent stroke, decided to come along for the ride. She hoped the alleged healing power of the base’s ancient Native American hot springs might cure her crippling headaches. Baumgart sought to debunk claims that the military was spraying the atmosphere with toxic chemicals to control the weather. What follows is a discovery that threatens to sever not only the bonds between mother and son but between planet Earth and life itself. Stalking the fringes of Internet conspiracy, speculative science, and contemporary archaeology, Baumgart weaves memoir, military history, and investigative journalism in a dizzying journey that carries him from the cornfields of Iowa to drought-riddled California, from the Vietnam jungle to the caves of prehistoric Europe and eventually the walls of the US Capitol, the sparkling white hallways of the Pentagon, and straight into the contradicted heart of a worldwide climate emergency.

Book The Book of a Hundred Hands

Download or read book The Book of a Hundred Hands written by Cole Swensen and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2005-04 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hand is second only to language in defining the human being, and its constant presence makes it a ready reminder of our humanity, with all its privileges and obligations. In this dazzling collection, Cole Swensen explores the hand from any angle approachable by language and art. Her hope: to exhaust the hand as subject matter; her joy: the fact that she couldn’t. These short poems reveal the hand from a hundred different perspectives. Incorporating sign language, drawing manuals, paintings from the 14th to the 20th century, shadow puppets, imagined histories, positions (the “hand as a boatless sail”), and professions (“the hand as window in which the panes infinitesimal”), Cole Swensen’s fine hand is “that which augments” our understanding and appreciation of “this freak wing,” this “wheel that comforts none” yet remains “a fruit the size and shape of the heart.”

Download or read book Good Apples written by Susan Futrell and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2017-09 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apples are so ordinary and so ubiquitous that we often take them for granted. Yet it is surprisingly challenging to grow and sell such a common fruit. In fact, producing diverse, tasty apples for the market requires almost as much ingenuity and interdependence as building and maintaining a vibrant democracy. Understanding the geographic, ecological, and economic forces shaping the choices of apple growers, apple pickers, and apple buyers illuminates what’s at stake in the way we organize our food system. Good Apples is for anyone who wants to go beyond the kitchen and backyard into the orchards, packing sheds, and cold storage rooms; into the laboratories and experiment stations; and into the warehouses, stockrooms, and marketing meetings, to better understand how we as citizens and eaters can sustain the farms that provide food for our communities. Susan Futrell has spent years working in sustainable food distribution, including more than a decade with apple growers. She shows us why sustaining family orchards, like family farms, may be essential to the soul of our nation.

Book The Afterlives of Specimens

Download or read book The Afterlives of Specimens written by Lindsay Tuggle and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Afterlives of Specimens explores the space between science and sentiment, the historical moment when the human cadaver became both lost love object and subject of anatomical violence. Walt Whitman witnessed rapid changes in relations between the living and the dead. In the space of a few decades, dissection evolved from a posthumous punishment inflicted on criminals to an element of preservationist technology worthy of the presidential corpse of Abraham Lincoln. Whitman transitioned from a fervent opponent of medical bodysnatching to a literary celebrity who left behind instructions for his own autopsy, including the removal of his brain for scientific study. Grounded in archival discoveries, Afterlives traces the origins of nineteenth-century America’s preservation compulsion, illuminating the influences of botanical, medical, spiritualist, and sentimental discourses on Whitman’s work. Tuggle unveils previously unrecognized connections between Whitman and the leading “medical men” of his era, such as the surgeon John H. Brinton, founding curator of the Army Medical Museum, and Silas Weir Mitchell, the neurologist who discovered phantom limb syndrome. Remains from several amputee soldiers whom Whitman nursed in the Washington hospitals became specimens in the Army Medical Museum. Tuggle is the first scholar to analyze Whitman’s role in medically memorializing the human cadaver and its abandoned parts.

Book A Point Is Which Has No Part

Download or read book A Point Is Which Has No Part written by Liz Waldner and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2000-04 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liz Waldner's bold new collection takes its title and its inspiration from Definition 1 of Euclid's Elements of Geometry. Its six sections—point, line, circle, square, triangle, and point again—are explorations of various kinds of longing and loss—sex, death, exile, story, love, and time. Drawing from culture high and low—Eno and Aquinas, Lassie and Donne, Silicon Valley and Walden Pond—these poems offer proof of and proof against the “mortal right-lined circle” of memory and identity. The innocence and Keatsian beauty of Euclid's geometry become poignant from a perspective that encompasses all that is non-Euclidean as well as space, time, and the theory of matter. With rare wit and linguistic daring, Waldner opens resonant channels of communication that show there is indeed more than meets the eye—or the mind—in her poems. Hand to Mouth (Twist and Shout) Cold comes slow up out of the darkness among the leaves that smell so good when bruised Do you, too, recognize me god so soon? Her First Reckoning Pour wine into vessels the violet of woods, wine of the reddening stars. You are god, you can do it. Your lover calls you St. John the Conqueror. I have heard her. This is the name of a root. Asperge the thousands and thousands of rooms in which photosynthesis promises sun to the acolyte cells. Rain yourself on a leaf. Birch. The bark is malleable as mushroom flesh. Show that you know me. Scratch out my name with this tree. My name of trees. On the day I arrive at the door of my death, myself now hard to tell from the trees that had hid it from me, I will demand that you love me. You made me like this. Why did you make me like this? Transitive, Intransitive: Extemporary Measures Two crows above the marsh: sew. Stitch the seventeen sleek shades of blue to the shadow-patterned greens below. See fit to make me a suitable view who having nowhere to else to go might as well wear this world well. Llama necks periscope the view: yonder, across the water, you testing the air now a crow chases a redwing blackbird through. What can I show you who sees I don't believe? For now, what the eye of the needle sees: through through through: clouds, birds, me, trees; soon: in, out, with, to; something moving, something moved: a stitch in time's an avenue, future's sutures' revenue— “the shining hour” improved.
