In From Narrative to Necessity (2012) we then set forth the essential theme of Hegel’s theology as the transcendence of “picture-thinking”. In a third volume, Reason’s Developing Self-Revelation (2013), we specified this same theme as humanity’s accomplished future (ultimate end of life, the Idea). Here, finally, we discover the reconciliation of Mind with itself as the nerve of Hegel’s thought. Hence, this book is subtitled “Logic as Form of the World”, picking up on Gottlob Frege’s rhetorical question, “What is the world without the reason?” The first chapter recapitulates that intimate union of God and man the Christian confessional movement would manifest, set forth here philosophically. This leads naturally to an identification of faith, the virtue, with the habit of rationality. Religious apologetic is found to fall short of philosophy, which forms a system (chapter 15). In “Logic and the World” (chapter18) we further specify such logical knowledge as issuing in rational will, called love in J. M. E. McTaggart’s Hegelian writings. Man himself, herself, is finally identified with Mind as both the uniquely determining “form” (the Idea) of our self-transcending nature, universalising the individual, individualising the universal, and, equally, form of “the world”. Here the thrust of Hegel’s metaphysics confirms those of Aristotle on this point. Last, after some historical and practical reflections (medieval thought, the clergy, Marxism), we end where we began, with the transforming effect of Hegel’s thought as developing the doctrine of a divine creation in particular, while also developing the doctrine of this development itself, in anticipatory development, therefore, of J. H. Newman’s classic essay of 1845 on The Development of Christian Doctrine.

By their fiction and nonfiction, and by film (The Shack), universalists such as Paul Young, Brian McLaren, Rob Bell, and others are propagating the idea that the love of God trumps all other attributes of God including his holiness and justice. From this starting point universalists believe that all people are born as children of God, that all are going to heaven, that all must embrace God's love. Those who reject God in this life will repent after death and escape hell. Even the devil and his angels will repent from hell and go to heaven. Universalism is an old idea. Christians have confronted UR since the third century and refuted it as heresy--heresy because UR believes that faith in Jesus is unnecessary. Thus, the death of Jesus Christ as an atonement for sin becomes unnecessary. Through his acquaintance with Paul Young, De Young is increasingly concerned that Young and other universalists are misleading many. In this book De Young challenges all the arguments that universalists make--their appeals to the Bible, to logic and reason, and to church history--and shows that they are unconvincing.

Ilaria Ramelli argues that this picture is completely mistaken. She maintains that Christian theologians were the first people to proclaim that all will be saved and that their reasons for doing so were rooted in their faith in Christ. She demonstrates that, in fact, the idea of the final restoration of all creation (apokatastasis) was grounded upon the teachings of the Bible and the church’s beliefs about Jesus’ total triumph over sin, death, and evil through his incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. Ramelli traces the Christian roots of Origen’s teaching on apokatastasis. She argues that he was drawing on texts from Scripture and from various Christians who preceded him, theologians such as Bardaisan, Irenaeus, and Clement. She outlines Origen’s often-misunderstood theology in some detail and then follows the legacy of his Christian universalism through the centuries that followed. Critics contend that von Balthasar espouses universalism, the idea that all men will certainly be saved. Yet, as von Balthasar insists, damnation is a real possibility for anyone. Indeed, he explores the nature of damnation with sobering clarity. At the same time, he contends that a deep understanding of God’s merciful love and human freedom, and a careful reading of the Catholic tradition, point to the possibility—not the certainty—that, in the end, all men will accept the salvation Christ won for all. For this all-embracing salvation, von Balthasar says, we may dare hope, we must pray and with God’s help we must work. The Catholic Church’s teaching on hell has been generally neglected by theologians, with the notable exception of von Balthasar. He grounds his reflections clearly in Sacred Scripture and Catholic teaching. While the Church asserts that certain individuals are in heaven (the saints), she never declares a specific individual to be in hell. In fact, the Church hopes that in their final moments of life, even the greatest sinners would have repented of their terrible sins, and be saved. Sacred Scripture states, “God ... desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all” (1 Tim 2:4–5).
