Book Unity with Diversity in the European Economy

Download or read book Unity with Diversity in the European Economy written by Centre for Economic Policy Research (Great Britain) and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-08-30 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enlargement that encompassed the accession of Greece in 1981 and of Spain and Portugal in 1986 significantly altered the balance of the European Community (EC), while the double shock of EC membership and 1992 could have driven the economies of the new members into depression or, equally, accelerate their modernisation. This important 1990 book from the Centre for Economic Policy Research examines theoretical issues in the integration of a diverse economic region and the combined impact of EC membership, financial integration and the single market programme on the joining countries. There is an introduction by the editors and a foreword by Michael Emerson and Richard Portes.

It offers a thorough discussion of issues such as the euro, social policy, democracy and security, and includes areas that are often overlooked: cultural policy; language; policing; and the specific experience of small states. By analyzing past trends in European unity and disunity European Integration in the Twenty-first Century also offers stimulating insights into possible developments in the future. Finally, the book moves beyond a narrow preoccupation with the economic market to identify new ways in which to construct a broader, more meaningful political and socio-economic community. Bringing together experts from different fields, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the many challenges to the on-going European integration project.

Book Negotiating Unity and Diversity in the European Union

Download or read book Negotiating Unity and Diversity in the European Union written by Florian Bieber and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the European Union has been responding to the challenge of diversity. In doing so, it considers the EU as a complex polity that has found novel ways for accommodating diversity. Much of the literature on the EU seeks to identify it as a unique case of cooperation between states that moves past classic international cooperation. This volume argues that in order to understand the EU’s effort in managing the diversity among its members and citizens it is more effective to look at the EU as a state. While acknowledging that the EU lacks key aspects of statehood, the authors show that looking at the EU efforts to balance diversity and unity through the lens of state policy is a fruitful way to understand the Union. Instead of conceptualising the EU as being incomparable and unique which is neither an international organisation nor a state, the book argues that EU can be understood as a polity that shares many approaches and strategies with complex and diverse states. As such, its effort to build political structures to accommodate diversity offers lessons to other such polities. The experience of the EU contributes to the understanding of how states and other polities can respond to challenges of diversity, including both the diversity of constituent units or of sub-national groups and identities.

Book Unity and Diversity in the New Europe

Download or read book Unity and Diversity in the New Europe written by Barrie Axford and published by Peter Lang Limited, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of the first multi-disciplinary collections to examine aspects of both the unity and the enormous diversity which characterise contemporary Europe. Covering subjects as varied as the Second World War, advertising, and Romani culture, contributors explore some fascinating areas which often serve to highlight the importance of history, memory, identity and culture in the construction of Europe. In many ways the book is about renewal, but contributors approach the New Europe in a way which acknowledges the complexity of different cultures and identify often hidden obstacles along the path towards European unity. It recognises the importance of formal political, economic and legal frameworks, but also goes beyond them.

Book European Populations

Download or read book European Populations written by Van der Kaa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changing demographic landscape which Europe is facing today and in the next decades reflects the past. These changes constitute important challenges to European populations and societies. Shifts in fertility and family formation, in health, morbidity and mortality, in internal and international migration as well as changes in age structures, in households, in labour forces, and in population growth and decline, will influence the living conditions and well-being of Europe's population directly or indirectly. The demographic challenge also concerns the environment, local, regional and national developments, education, production and consumption patterns, economic competitiveness, social security, housing, employment and transport, and health and social care provisions. These issues, their mechanisms, determinants and consequences also challenge the scientific study of population. As a major forum and 'market place' for scientific demographic debate, the 1999 European Population Conference (EPC99) was organized to take up this challenge. On the threshold of the third millennium, European populations are united in diversity and face major demographic issues.

Book Conditions of European Solidarity What holds Europe together

Download or read book Conditions of European Solidarity What holds Europe together written by Krzysztof Michalski and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses contemporary developments in European identity politics as part of a larger historical trajectory of a common European identity based on the idea of 'solidarity.' The authors explain the special sense in which Europeans perceive their obligations to their less fortunate compatriots, to the new East European members, and to the world at large. An understanding of this notion of 'solidarity' is critical to understanding the specific European commitment to social justice and equality. The specificity of this term helps to distinguish between what the Germans call "social state" from the Anglo-Saxon, and particularly American, political and social system focused on capitalism and economic liberalism. This collection is the result of the work of an extremely distinguished group of scholars and politicians, invited by the previous President of the European Union, Romano Prodi, to reflect on some of the most important subjects affecting the future of Europe.

Book Reshaping Europe in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Reshaping Europe in the Twenty First Century written by Patrick Robertson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts forward a wide-ranging plan for a European confederation which respects individuals' freedom to pursue their economic and political interests whilst bringing European countries closer together. It is argued that unity in diversity is stronger than a potential European super-state run from Brussels. It brings together independent thinkers with a clear and often controversial vision of Europe's future which challenges the reasoning behind monetary and political union and is sure to generate further debate on Europe's future and the role of the state in society.
