Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many analysts initially believed that the process of Soviet disintegration would inevitably open a Pandora's box of ethnic nationalism and regional self-determination. But, despite obvious setbacks such as Chechnya, the developments of the last decade have shown that while forces of disintegration remain a very real threat, the fifteen successor states have managed to stay largely intact. One explanation for this somewhat unexpected success is the varied strategies of center-periphery relations adopted by the post-Soviet states, tailored to meet the unique of circumstances faced by each former republic of the Soviet Union. The contributors to this up-to-date volume examine the specific cases of success and failure in center-periphery relations in the former USSR, and offer some provocative overall conclusions about the progress made and the impact on the process of democratization. The cases examined in this volume are drawn from Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, among others. These case studies demonstrate that realtions between national and local governments have been evolving differently in each of the successor states in the but in each case there has been a conscious attempt to create stacble center-periphery relations, which give a degree of autonomy to minority groups while still providing for a stable state and democratic development. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of the former Soviet Union and those interested in federalization and center-periphery.

Book Individuation Process and Scientific Practices

Download or read book Individuation Process and Scientific Practices written by Otávio Bueno and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What things count as individuals, and how do we individuate them? It is a classic philosophical question often tackled from the perspective of analytic metaphysics. This volume proposes that there is another channel by which to approach individuation -- from that of scientific practices. From this perspective, the question then becomes: How do scientists individuate things and, therefore, count them as individuals? This volume collects the work of philosophers of science to engage with this central philosophical conundrum from a new angle, highlighting the crucial topic of experimental individuation and building upon recent, pioneering work in the philosophy of science. An introductory chapter foregrounds the problem of individuation, arguing it should be considered prior to the topic of individuality. The following chapters address individuation and individuality from a variety of perspectives, with prominent themes being the importance of experimentation, individuation as a process, and pluralism in individuation's criteria. Contributions examine individuation in a wide range of sciences, including stem cell biology, particle physics, and community ecology. Other chapters examine the metaphysics of individuation, its bearing on realism/antirealism debates, and interrogate epistemic aspects of individuation in scientific practice. In exploring individuation from the philosophy of biology, physics, and other scientific subjects, this volume ultimately argues for the possibility of several criteria of individuation, upending the tenets of traditional metaphysics. It provides insights for philosophers of science, but also for scientists interested in the conceptual foundations of their work.

Book Psychoanalysis and Deconstruction

Download or read book Psychoanalysis and Deconstruction written by Jared Russell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychoanalysis and Deconstruction: Freud's Psychic Apparatus demonstrates the relevance of deconstructive thinking for the clinical practice of psychoanalysis. Arguing that deconstruction has been misrepresented as a form of literary theory or a philosophy of language, the book puts Derrida, Heidegger and others working in the tradition of deconstruction into dialogue with debates in the contemporary psychoanalytic field. Attempting to retrieve what was radical in Freud’s portrayal of the mind as a machine, Jared Russell stresses the importance of psychoanalysis for an understanding of the relationship between the human and its current hyper-technological environment. Interventions into contemporary debates address psychoanalytic concepts such as the nature of the clinical frame, the intersubjective dialogue, unconscious communication and the experience of time. Russell argues that deconstruction, and in particular Derrida’s work, can anticipate and help clarify ongoing developments at the cutting edge of psychoanalysis today. Psychoanalysis and Deconstruction: Freud's Psychic Apparatus will appeal not only to a philosophically informed audience but also to clinicians attempting to secure a place for psychoanalytic practice at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

Book Religion Politics and Law

Download or read book Religion Politics and Law written by Bart Labuschagne and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-03-16 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern, liberal democracies in the West living under the rule of law and protection of human rights cannot articulate the very values from which they derive their legitimacy. These pre-political and pre-legal preconditions cannot be guaranteed, let alone be enforced by the state, but constitute nevertheless its moral and spiritual infrastructure. Until recently, a common background and horizon consisted in Christianity, but due to secularisation and globalisation, society has become increasingly multicultural and multireligious. The question can and should be raised how religion relates to these sources of normative order in society, how religion, politics and law relate to each other, and how social cohesion can be attained in society, given the growing varieties of religious experiences. In this book, a philosophical account of this question is carried out, on the one hand historically from Plato to the Enlightenment, on the other hand systematically and practically.

Download or read book Being Amongst Others written by Eric Chelstrom and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our world can be a bewildering place. The sense of awe and wonder at the states of affairs in which we find ourselves immersed give rise to philosophical questions. Philosophical reflection is a critical attempt to come to grips with our place in the world and the various problems we encounter in respect to the complexities encountered in everyday life. In the most basic terms, phenomenology is the study of the structures and relations of phenomena. Phenomenology begins from a descriptive analysis of our experiences of the world. It grants precedent to the first person perspective–how phenomena appear to consciousness. There are any number of problems related to the plenitude of kinds of experiences which confront us through the course of our lives, in addition to the structure of consciousness itself. This volume presents a variety of views on a number of the phenomena of our everyday lives, offering positions on such things from the nature of consciousness to the structures of religious or political experiences. Its appeal, however, should not be limited to philosophers alone–given that all persons can relate to the subject matter of the essays. For instance, one author asks, “what is friendship?” The present work may also be understood as a gesture toward bridging the division between the valuable insights of continental and analytic philosophical traditions. The authors include a combination of established academics, such as Jeffrey Wattles–the best-selling author of The Golden Rule–and young scholars from varied philosophical backgrounds. This collection is divided into four sections: (I) Foundational Elements of Experience; (II) The Experiencing Subject: What is it to be a Subject?; (III) Amongst Others: The Social World; and (IV) Social Objects and Institutions. Each section represents a level of experience, from the most basic structures of experience, to the subject’s experience of the world and objects in it, to experiences and interactions with others, ending at the results of the codifications of certain social practices and beliefs. The sections treat their respective topics principally, even if they share material with other essays. Our experiences of the life-world, the world of human praxis, contain a multiplicity of elements; the divisions of this work are meant to demarcate various types of phenomena, not to offer any definitive thesis regarding a hierarchy or structure of relations.

Book Touching the Invisible

Download or read book Touching the Invisible written by Chris McAlister and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three experienced Shiatsu practitioners share knowledge and insights gained over thirty years of clinical practice and teaching to create a book they themselves would have wanted to provide practical guidance and philosophical perspective on this healing art. The book’s central themes are awareness, intuition and intention in the practice of Shiatsu and how this body-mind perspective can influence the wider health debate. A modern rendering of the ancient wisdom underpinning Shiatsu and Oriental medicine, this book goes beyond the technical details of Shiatsu as a specific therapy to the universal principles underlying it. Presenting Shiatsu from different perspectives, ranging from its philosophical underpinnings to the realities of daily practice, this text represents the fruit of the knowledge we apply and continually re-evaluate in our ongoing clinical work. The question and answer format is based upon classical tradition – the most famous text within traditional Oriental medicine, Huang Di Nei Jing, uses this method to illustrate complex ideas in an easy to read manner. The text is organically formed through questions formulated by our student and fellow practitioner Filippa Freed. These questions, stemming from her training and practice, facilitate a broad discussion that roams freely between technical principles, case studies and informal anecdotes.
