Eliot and Religious Liberalism by Stephen Williams Unity In Diversity: T.S. Eliot and Religious Liberalism is a critical examination of Eliot's search to discovermeaning and unity in his life. Through an examination of his published work, especially the poetry, this spiritual questis detailed with full illustrations from the poems. The content of Eliot's poetry can suggest four significant distinctions: a seemingly agnostic or rebellious phase leadingto the poet's absorption in Indian religious belief; an interest in the Book of the Tarot as being at least representative ofan 'alternative', an almost 'supernatural' form of mysticism; a return to the Christian belief of the West, and to the lesscommon Christian mysticism in particular; and, finally, to the essence of these outwardly diverse fields being embracedinto a united whole. Eliot strives to cultivate the essence of Reality existing within the Self of humankind, the essence that might ultimatelybring about an ecstatic illumination of the One, the ground of all Being. Section One examines Eliot's research into Eastern religions of Buddhism and Hinduism, showing how this interestappears clearly in the imagery of his poetry. Section Two examines Eliot's interest in mysticism and the Tarot. Taking the Tarot cards Eliot introduces into his majorpoem The Waste Land, an identification of the cards he uses is made, together with showing how these cardscan be read, or interpretted to show how they are precisely selected cards and not random images, and so give a clearpicture of Eliot's intent. Section Three examines Eliot's profound interest in the Mystic Way. Section Four examines Eliot's return to the more orthodox Anglicanism whilst still retaining a union, a collocation,of his lifetime of research and spiritual questing. Nonetheless, there remains much scope for reconsidering the content, form and expressive nature of Eliot’s religious poetry, and this edited collection pays particular attention to the multivalent spiritual dimensions of his popular poems, such as ‘The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock’, ‘The Waste Land’, ‘Journey of the Magi’, ‘The Hollow Men’, and ‘Choruses’ from The Rock. Eliot’s sustained popularity is an intriguing cultural phenomenon, given that the religious voice of Eliot’s poetry is frequently antagonistic towards the ‘unchurched’ or secular reader: ‘You! By using careful time honored traditional methods of Biblical investigation, we'll have a serious and sober look at what the Scriptures really say about this future world ruler. There are also some new discoveries that many would find surprising, even shocking. Now, that's a lot to swallow all at once. That the future is knowable on some level, and that it's going to be so horrible. Why would anyone want to believe this could happen? Deep down, I don't want to believe it. It's so much easier to reject it, than to allow it to threaten your whole frame of reference. That tug of war, that vague unease, that's supposed to happen too. It's Biblical prophecy doing its thing. It takes a lot of guts to consider ideas that have the power to explode your comfortable world view. If you decide to read this book, remember, it's ok to be skeptical. It's absolutely required for a healthy mind. But resist the awful temptation to reject out-of-hand. Aside from being an addictive and lazy habit, it just may deprive you someday of knowing that wonderful excruciating panic of having your mind blown open.
