Book excerpt: This center has been conducting a development program to explore the On-Board Oxygen Generation (OBOG) concept for application aboard tactical Naval aircraft. The objective of the program is to eliminate hazardous and logistically burdensome LOX (liquid oxygen) installations on ships, as well as in forward basing areas, by generation of oxygen on board the aircraft. Program progress includes: (1)Major reduction in values of weight and resource requirements to acceptable levels; (2) Development of hardware prototypes of the proposed systems suitable for flight test; (3) Aircraft/OBOG systems integration studies; (4) Laboratory T & E of the prototype systems; (5) Physiological assessment (man rating) of the prototype systems; and (6) Flight testing to date. This paper reports current progress including: Laboratory qualification testing and Technical Evaluation.

An evaluation program was conducted on an oxygen generator utilizing the molecular sieve concept of nitrogen absorption. The system was developed to establish unit performance in the environment anticipated during in flight operation. Oxygen concentration has been evaluated as a function of inlet air pressure.

Book excerpt: Most Navy surface vessels are equipped with cryogenic (LOX and LN) storage-evaporator gas supply systems to produce oxygen and nitrogen for life support, flight service, and other system applications. Increased mobility and independence of land-base logistic support requires new, on-board O2 and N2 generation systems, to be installed on existing and future Navy ships. This study summarizes existing industrial candidate systems, and overviews some new processes under development. Analysis was conducted on gaseous oxygen and nitrogen generation systems of the most likely candidates, and particular attention was focused on molecular sieve gas separators. Next, the report concentrates on engineering design guidelines for constructions of on-board gas generators of confined scales. Safety, maintenance, and standard (industrial and MIL) requirements are summarized to help construct, test, and evaluate a scaled prototype on-board O2/N2 generation system. The study identified two types of presently available industrial gas generation systems suitable for confined on-board applications. However, significant modifications and development are necessary to meet filtration, protection and stress-prevention requirements.

Book excerpt: The information provided in SAE AIR825/6 applies to On Board Oxygen Generating Systems (OBOGS) - Molecular Sieve, that utilize the ability of molecular sieve materials by using Pressure Swing Adsorption Process (PSA) to separate and concentrate oxygen in the product gas from the surrounding air, respectively air provided by any compressor or by the aircraft engine (so called: Bleed Air), and to provide this oxygen enriched air or product gas as supplemental oxygen for breathing gas supply of crew and passengers onboard aircraft. The distribution system and the provided oxygen concentration have to fulfill the respective FAA/JAA regulations.Equipment using this technology to provide supplemental oxygen for breathing gas supply of crew and passengers onboard aircraft, the suitable breathing gas oxygen partial pressure or oxygen concentration requirements are specified in AIR825/2 and the oxygen purity requirements in AS8010.NOTE: OBOGS has never been certified for commercial aircraft. The FAR/JAR 25 as well as FAR 121/JAR-OPS need to be reviewed and if necessary amended prior to introduction of OBOGS. Alternatively, such certification will likely incorporate various special conditions that address differences in performance between OBOGS and conventional systems.These systems are intended for: athe on-line breathing gas supply to directly account for the normal oxygen usage of crew and passengers in terms of: 1supplemental oxygen for part or all of an emergency descent 2supplemental oxygen for first aid 3therapeutic oxygen bthe replenishment of the aircraft gaseous oxygen system storage cylinders to account for the normal oxygen usage of crew and passengers and system leakage ca combination of the above.The possible applicability and benefit of incorporation of OBOGS-Molecular Sieve into non-military aircraft is being considered by the representatives of Civil Aviation. The intended aim of AIR825/6 is to provide a fundamental description of the function of existing OBOGS-Molecular-Sieve systems with a related reference to the type of oxygen standards which would merit a review. AIR825/6 has been reaffirmed to comply with the SAE five-year review policy.

Book excerpt: Molecular sieve technology has been considered as an alternative source of oxygen for US Army operational fixed and rotary wing aircraft. With the constraints of weight, size, and electrical power, the Army molecular sieve oxygen generator (AMSOG) appeared to meet operational needs. Initial design was predicated on direct replacement of current oxygen equipment for the two man crew OV-1 Mohawk surveillance aircraft. Initial bench and hypobaric chamber testing demonstrates a capability to provide 90-94% oxygen at sea level using engine bleed or compressed air at 40 PSIG, 20 to 22 liters per minute (LPM), normal temperature 70 deg F, pressure 760 Torr, dry (NTPD). Ninety-four percent (94%) oxygen is expected to support both physiologic needs and provide denitrogenation capabilities for US Army aircrew. Argon is concentrated to levels of 6-8% and is considered to be low; however, physiologic effects have not been fully defined. In-flight studies and toxicology evaluation are continuing. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report sets forth the findings of a test and evaluation (man rating) of the molecular sieve oxygen generation system developed for the 1B Long Range Combat Aircraft. A series of unmanned and manned tests, covering the range of aircraft operating conditions, were conducted on a duplicate of the aircraft breathing system which was assembled in an environmental chamber. The control variables were cabin and aircraft ambient pressure, inlet air temperature and pressure, cabin temperature, and demand flow; and the dependent variables were oxygen concentration, pressure swings in the mask, and time required for backup oxygen to reach the crew after rapid decompression (RD). Oxygen output met or exceeded specification requirements for all but two test points. Under nominal aircraft operating conditions and the maximum average demand flow of 160 liters per minute (1pm), oxygen concentration fell slightly below specification requirements at 25,000 and 28,000 ft cabin altitude. These discrepancies are not considered significant (i.e., will not compromise crew safety), because the probability is very slight that a demand flow rate as high as 160 1pm will ever occur (tests showed that 6 persons taking moderately heavy, rapid breaths generated 135 1pm average demand at ground level). Furthermore, the oxygen partial pressure, in the worst case, was equivalent to breathing air at only 4,000 ft pressure altitude.
