Book excerpt: Now in a fifth edition, Latin America has been updated to reflect the region's growing optimism as economies stabilize, trade diversifies, and political systems become more participatory. This multidisciplinary survey of Latin American history, politics, and society features invited contributions from authorities in a variety of fields. New sections address current events including deforestation in Costa Rica and Brazil, emerging social movements, Ecuador's new constitution, and Obama's stated objectives to repair U.S. relations with the region. In addition, key topics (such as women and Latin American politics, socialist governments and anti-American sentiment, Argentina's deteriorating economy, and Colombia's struggle with military and narcotics issues) receive expanded and revitalized treatment. Other updated material covers outcomes of recent elections in Bolivia, Brazil, and Nicaragua, among others. Through a hybrid thematic and regional organization, this text provides an essential foundation for introductory courses on Latin America.

Book Trade and Human Rights

Download or read book Trade and Human Rights written by Susan C. Morris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: Utilizing the case of the 1994 US decision to delink China’s human rights record from most favoured nation status, Susan C. Morris addresses the critical issues where commercialism and human rights converge. This insightful addition to the literature on US foreign policy on human rights draws on both political and economic theory, touching upon the relationships between labour conditions and production, business and freedom of association, management and bargaining and ultimately the relationship between economics and human justice. Empirically, the work draws on US Congressional proceedings and debates throughout the decade of the 1990s. Although the trade and human rights debate has long been ingrained in the rhetoric of scholars, the research approaches the issue within the context of communism’s last major threshold, making it a valuable contribution to the field of international relations.

Book Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act and the Andean Trade Preference Act

Download or read book Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act and the Andean Trade Preference Act written by Thomas F. Jennings and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1998-08 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act (CBERA) encourages economic growth and development in Car. Basin countries by promoting increased prod'n. and exports of nontraditional products. Andean Trade Preference Act (ATPA) encourages Bolivia, Columbia, Ecuador, and Peru to reduce drug-crop cultivation and production by fostering production and exports of nontraditional products. Both programs authorize the Pres. to proclaim preferential rates of duty on many products entering the U.S. from these regions. This report estimates the impact of both laws on U.S. industries and consumers in 1996 and assesses the effectiveness of ATPA in promoting drug-related crop eradication and crop substitution efforts in beneficiary countries.
