Download or read book United States Coast Guard Integrated Risk Assessment Process Volume 3 Detailed Hazard Analysis of WMEC 270 Small Boat Operations Detailed Hazard Analysis of WLIC 160 Deck Operations and Risk Based Safety Survey of a WHEC 378 Vessel written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the new challenges (e.g., government downsizing, increased system complexity, ever changing high risk operations) faced by the Coast Guard, the Coast Guard Research and Development Center (RDC) was requested to explore the possibility of applying system safety concepts, including the use of risk analysis and enhancement of inspection procedures, to improve Coast Guard operations and facility safety. The Coast Guard RDC teamed with JBF Associates, Inc. (JBFA), a consulting firm specializing in hazard and risk analysis/management, to develop a risk based loss prevention program. The initial focus was on developing one portion of the risk based loss prevention program, a risk assessment process. This report discusses the development, validation, and end product (the Integrated Risk Assessment IRA process) of this effort. Effective implementation of the IRA process provides the Coast Guard with risk based information for: (1) controlling and reducing loss exposure, (2) making risk based decisions, and (3) using limited resources more efficiently. The IRA process proved to be an effective and efficient risk assessment tool for various types of vessels and their operations, as well as shore facilities and their operations.

Book excerpt: The Extraordinary Story Of The U.S. Coast Guard Since its founding more than two hundred years ago, the United States Coast Guard has rescued over a million people. On any given day, "Coasties" respond to 125 distress calls and save over a dozen lives. Yet despite having more than 50,000 active-duty and reserve members on every ocean and on our nation's coasts, great lakes, and rivers, most of us know very little about this often neglected but crucial branch of the military. In Rescue Warriors, award-winning journalist David Helvarg brings us into the daily lives of Coasties, filled with a salty maritime mix of altruism and adrenaline, as well as dozens of death-defying rescues at sea and on hurricane-ravaged shores. Helvarg spent two years with the men and women of the Coast Guard, from the halls of their academy in New London, Connecticut, to the frigid, storm-tossed waters of Alaska's Bering Sea, to the northern Persian Gulf, where they currently guard Iraqi oil terminals. The result is a masterpiece of adventure reporting---the definitive book on America's "forgotten heroes."

Book Alex Haley and the Books That Changed a Nation

Download or read book Alex Haley and the Books That Changed a Nation written by Robert J. Norrell and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is difficult to think of two twentieth century books by one author that have had as much influence on American culture when they were published as Alex Haley's monumental bestsellers, The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965), and Roots (1976). They changed the way white and black America viewed each other and the country's history. This first biography of Haley follows him from his childhood in relative privilege in deeply segregated small town Tennessee to fame and fortune in high powered New York City. It was in the Navy, that Haley discovered himself as a writer, which eventually led his rise as a star journalist in the heyday of magazine personality profiles. At Playboy Magazine, Haley profiled everyone from Martin Luther King and Miles Davis to Johnny Carson and Malcolm X, leading to their collaboration on The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Roots was for Haley a deeper, more personal reach. The subsequent book and miniseries ignited an ongoing craze for family history, and made Haley one of the most famous writers in the country. Roots sold half a million copies in the first two months of publication, and the original television miniseries was viewed by 130 million people. Haley died in 1992. This deeply researched and compelling book by Robert J. Norrell offers the perfect opportunity to revisit his authorship, his career as one of the first African American star journalists, as well as an especially dramatic time of change in American history.
