Book Unit Coal and the Composition of Coal Ash

Download or read book Unit Coal and the Composition of Coal Ash written by S. W. Parr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unit Coal and the Composition of Coal Ash: August, 1909 A number of investigators have worked on various phases of this topic. Lord and Haas, who were no doubt the first in the field, have developed the idea that in any given type of coal, or perhaps, less broadly, in any given deposit of coal, there exists an initial substance, with certain uniformities as to calorific value, which might make it possible to calculate the heat units for any sample whose source as to locality was known. Book Chemical Study of Illinois Coals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chemical Study of Illinois Coals Classic Reprint written by Samuel Wilson Parr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-28 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical Study of Illinois Coals In the fifteen years which have intervened since the first study was made of the chemical composition and properties of the coals of the State, notable advancement has been made in methods of procedure in connection with such work. This result has naturally followed our increased knowledge and better understanding of the properties of this complex substance, but especially has it been caused by the marked changes which have occurred in the methods of purchasing coal, especially on the part of large consumers, whose contracts are based on specifications as to quality. This method has led to a care ful scrutiny of all processes yielding factors which enter into the final settlement. Small errors in large consignments may result in serious injustice to one or the other of the parties involved. These studies, therefore, have been especially directed to sampling, the conservation of moisture, and the determination of ash and of heat values. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The by-Products of Coal-Gas Manufacture The experiments show that the percentage content of cyanogen and ammonia is independent Of the origin and composition Of the coal; but that the sulphur, on the other hand, is generally more abun dant in English coals. Before going into the treat ment of the recovered substances, brief consideration, may be given to the gas works, to gain some idea of how the substances mentioned above are eliminated from the gas. Book The Fusibility of Coal Ash and the Determination of the Softening Temperature Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fusibility of Coal Ash and the Determination of the Softening Temperature Classic Reprint written by Arno C. Fieldner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fusibility of Coal Ash and the Determination of the Softening Temperature Although it is believed that this method will indicate the probable clinkering characteristics of a coal better than any fusion tests hereto fore described, the bureau does not recommend the general use of this method in coal Specifications until it is justified by actual trial in furnace tests of different coals. As no fusibility test of a well-mixed sample of the average ash of a coal takes into account the physical distribution of the impurities in the coal as burned, much additional investigation is needed to establish the exact relation of these labora tory fusibility tests to clinker formation. In order to correlate this proposed test of minimum softening temperature with clinker forma tion, the bureau is now making clinkering tests in a specially designed experimental furnace, in which different coals having ashes that differ in fusibility are burned under similar and known conditions of combustion. The results of this investigation will be published in a subsequent report. In the meantime it is hoped that other investigators will obtain similar correlation data. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coal in Great Britain: The Composition, Structure, and Resources of the Coalfields, Visible and Concealed, of Great Britain The present work is intended to supply mining engineers, mine owners, and mining students with a concise account of the more important facts relating to the geology of coal generally, and to the composition, structure, and resources of the coalfields of Great Britain in particular. It is hoped, also, that the subject is treated in a manner which will prove useful to those who, though not directly concerned in getting coal, are dependent on coal for industrial purposes, and also to those who take a scientific interest in this important industry. In dealing with so comprehensive a matter within a comparatively small space, many details that are often of great local importance are necessarily omitted; and for the same reason controversial matter has been avoided. Chapters I. to VIII., which may be regarded as introductory, are reproduced, with many additions, from the authors work on the Geology of Coal and Coal-Mining, which formed the first volume of Arnold's Geological Series, and which is now out of print. The rest of the book, dealing with the coalfields of Great Britain, is in part a condensation of personal experience and observations in the field during a period of thirty years, and of facts collected from various publications, more especially those of the Geological Survey of the United Kingdom and of the Federated Institute of Mining Engineers, to which the author here wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness. Book The Natural History of Coal Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Natural History of Coal Classic Reprint written by Edward Alexander Newell Arber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Coal In the past it would seem that the root of our difficulties in regard to agreement on such points has been the initial hypothesis, that all coals, or at least all the coals of the Carboniferous period, were derived from the same type of mother substance, accumulated under the same conditions, and converted by the same means. It is quite clear that such an assumption is entirely false. There was no one original mother substance, no one original mode of accumulation, and, if all the substances popularly termed coals, whatever their geological age may be, are taken into considera tion, no one mode of conversion. Modern research, as we shall see in the chapters which follow, has shown that each case, each seam of coal, must be examined, studied, and judged entirely on its own merits. When this fact has become more widely recognised, it would seem likely that our knowledge of the natural history of coal will progress more rapidly than in the past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Carbonisation of Coal: A Scientific Review of the Formation, Composition and Destructive Distillation of Coal for Gas, Coke and by-Products The Cantor Lectures which I gave in the winter of 1911 at the Royal Society of Arts, on the Carbonisation of Coal, brought me so many letters of inquiry on various points connected with the subject that I thought it might be of interest to some at least of those engaged in carbonising work if I took the lectures as a basis for a short treatise on the subject, and I think the absence of any book dealing at all fully with the scientific side of carbonisation justifies the attempt. During the last forty years I have been interested in many fuel problems, and have had the good fortune during that period to assist at the birth of most of the new departures from the recognised rut of procedure, and also, I regret to say, have been a mourner at the funerals of many.
