Book Equations of the Mixed Type

Download or read book Equations of the Mixed Type written by A. V. Bitsadze and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equations of the Mixed Type compiles a series of lectures on certain fundamental questions in the theory of equations of mixed type. This book investigates the series of problems concerning linear partial differential equations of the second order in two variables, and possessing the property that the type of the equation changes either on the boundary of or inside the considered domain. Topics covered include general remarks on linear partial differential equations of mixed type; study of the solutions of second order hyperbolic equations with initial conditions given along the lines of parabolicity; and study of the solutions of second order elliptic equations for a domain, the boundary of which includes a segment of the curve of parabolic degeneracy. The problem of Tricomi and other mixed problems are also deliberated in this text. This publication is a good reference for students and researchers conducting work on the theory of equations of mixed type.

Book Forward and Inverse Problems for Hyperbolic Elliptic and Mixed Type Equations

Download or read book Forward and Inverse Problems for Hyperbolic Elliptic and Mixed Type Equations written by Alexander G. Megrabov and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-05-24 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse problems are an important and rapidly developing direction in mathematics, mathematical physics, differential equations, and various applied technologies (geophysics, optic, tomography, remote sensing, radar-location, etc.). In this monograph direct and inverse problems for partial differential equations are considered. The type of equations focused are hyperbolic, elliptic, and mixed (elliptic-hyperbolic). The direct problems arise as generalizations of problems of scattering plane elastic or acoustic waves from inhomogeneous layer (or from half-space). The inverse problems are those of determination of medium parameters by giving the forms of incident and reflected waves or the vibrations of certain points of the medium. The method of research of all inverse problems is spectral-analytical, consisting in reducing the considered inverse problems to the known inverse problems for the Sturm-Liouville equation or the string equation. Besides the book considers discrete inverse problems. In these problems an arbitrary set of point sources (emissive sources, oscillators, point masses) is determined.

Book Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Partial Differential Equations written by P. R. Garabedian and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-10-19 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a review of the original edition: This book is primarily a text for a graduate course in partial differential equations, although the later chapters are devoted to special topics not ordinarily covered in books in this field … [T]he author has made use of an interesting combination of classical and modern analysis in his proofs … Because of the author's emphasis on constructive methods for solving problems which are of physical interest, his book will likely be as welcome to the engineer and the physicist as to the mathematician … The author and publisher are to be complimented on the general appearance of the book. —Mathematical Reviews This book is a gem. It fills the gap between the standard introductory material on PDEs that an undergraduate is likely to encounter after a good ODE course (separation of variables, the basics of the second-order equations from mathematical physics) and the advanced methods (such as Sobolev spaces and fixed point theorems) that one finds in modern books. Although this is not designed as a textbook for applied mathematics, the approach is strongly informed by applications. For instance, there are many existence and uniqueness results, but they are usually approached via very concrete techniques. The text contains the standard topics that one expects in an intermediate PDE course: the Dirichlet and Neumann problems, Cauchy's problem, characteristics, the fundamental solution, PDEs in the complex domain, plus a chapter on finite differences, on nonlinear fluid mechanics, and another on integral equations. It is an excellent text for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students in mathematics or neighboring fields, such as engineering and physics, where PDEs play a central role.

Book The Dirichlet Problem for Elliptic Hyperbolic Equations of Keldysh Type

Download or read book The Dirichlet Problem for Elliptic Hyperbolic Equations of Keldysh Type written by Thomas H. Otway and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Partial differential equations of mixed elliptic-hyperbolic type arise in diverse areas of physics and geometry, including fluid and plasma dynamics, optics, cosmology, traffic engineering, projective geometry, geometric variational theory, and the theory of isometric embeddings. And yet even the linear theory of these equations is at a very early stage. This text examines various Dirichlet problems which can be formulated for equations of Keldysh type, one of the two main classes of linear elliptic-hyperbolic equations. Open boundary conditions (in which data are prescribed on only part of the boundary) and closed boundary conditions (in which data are prescribed on the entire boundary) are both considered. Emphasis is on the formulation of boundary conditions for which solutions can be shown to exist in an appropriate function space. Specific applications to plasma physics, optics, and analysis on projective spaces are discussed. (From the preface)
