Book excerpt: My Time Most people live their lives on a day to day basis. Our planning calendar is booked for three to seven days in the future. We seldom take a step back and look at recent events in perspective. This book is intended to provide that perspective look at events that shaped the course of our lives. Only in retrospect do we realize the changes that have occurred and influenced events of our lives. This process might be compared to watching an "Old time silent movie". How strangely people dressed and acted in "those days". We get a sense of values and attitudes of that time. Then we see movies made during the 1930's. There is a difference in dress, in automobiles, in the telephones seen in those movies. Customs have changed and attitudes have changed since those early silent movie days. This book links day to day living with the evolving events that impact our lives, shape attitudes and philosophies, as individuals, as states and nations. It has been said, "The only thing certain is change."

It is the beginning of Xi Jinping's reign and the locals are full of optimism as China has opened up and become more tolerant and wealthier. Simon enters the society finding the manners of the locals delightful and begins to learn the language. English Corner, teaching, relationships, and his rapidly improving Chinese offer him insight into a culture and society that slowly reveals itself as his personal relationships become deeper. Over time Simon encounters a dysfunctional education system and increasing visa restrictions and censorship, but eventually buys a training centre, marries, and has children, tying him to the country. By 2016, the first cracks in international relations appear, and over the following years steadily deteriorate. Society becomes less tolerant and foreigners begin to fear being arrested in retaliation for disputes with their home country. They retreat into their private lives, daring not to publicly express their views. Simon's very different upbringing brings him into conflict with his partner as they struggle to reconcile their different cultural backgrounds and world views. Soon foreigners leave country in droves and the salaries of foreign teachers increase dramatically, while the economy begins to tank under the weight of an oversupply of housing and conflicts with trading partners. Then the Covid-19 pandemic strikes... and the hostilities really begin. Chinese Dream offers a comprehensive and sensitive view of the changes that have occurred in China between 2013 and 2023. It is a modern historical novel as it is set against a backdrop of a well researched and historically accurate timeline.

Book excerpt: This is the story of the clash between two gigantic personalities in the early years of the twentieth century. On one side was Admiral Lord Charles Beresford. Physically strong, courageous and hot-headed, he was the most popular admiral in the navy. Addicted to the sound of his own voice, he drew crowds of thousands whenever he spoke in public. On the other side was the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir John Fisher. Of humble origin, he had risen through hard work and genius to become the greatest naval reformer that Britain has ever known. Both men wished to be First Sea Lord. When the prize went to Fisher, Beresford determined to unseat him at any cost. He launched attacks in Parliament, he plotted with Unionist politicians, he leaked state secrets and he courted public opinion. As a popular public figure, no one dared act against him until he finally overstepped the mark and viciously hounded a rear-admiral out of his fleet.A Cabinet inquiry followed, sitting for fifteen days. Its five members listened to Beresfords incoherent account of his eight charges. In the end, they dismissed the charges, but failed to show any warm support for either man. Fishers resignation followed and Beresfords career came to an end.

Download or read book A Pastoral Democracy written by I. M. Lewis and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 1999 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, shortly after establishment of the independent Somali Republic, the first step towards the formation of a 'Greater Somalia', brought this North-East African Muslim nation a prominence which it had not enjoyed since the British campaigns against the 'Mad Mullah' in the first two decades of the twentieth century. Somali nationalism, however, cannot be properly understood without a knowledge of the indigenous social organization. This study by a social anthropologist describes the political system of the Northern Somali nomads in their arid ecological setting, where competition for access to water and pasture, especially in the dry season, is acute and leads to frequent and often long-drawn-out feuds. In this warlike society political status depends very largely on numerical strength. Political loyalties based on kinship are organized through a form of Social Contract which distinguishes the pastoral Somali political system from otherwise similar political structures. Today this traditional organization is being challenged in areas where cultivation has recently been adopted, and in towns which are the foci of modern developments. Somali nationalism, drawing much of its strength from the unifying force of Islam, is an important factor. With the continued dedication of the majority of the population to pastoral nomadism, however, traditional clan and contractual loyalties inevitably play an important part in party politics. This analysis has proved to be of interest not only to anthropologists and Africanists, but also to students of Islamic society and of comparative political institutions.

Book excerpt: When Jesus is born, there is a lot of attention paid to his birth. Still, life seems normal to him and he seems ordinary to those around him. Jesus grows up in the protective realm of his mother, visits his father’s workshop, and learns the scriptures. Sometimes he sees his mother staring into the distance, remembering the times not long ago when an angel spoke to her about his birth and life. Because his mother was a virgin on the day of his birth, Jesus’s existence is indisputable evidence of mystery. After Jesus eventually travels to Jerusalem with his parents for the Passover, he transforms into a man who finds himself attracted to a female friend, questions life, and realizes he must pursue his devotion to God. But as he begins to fulfill his destiny, Jesus has no idea of the infinite impact he is about to have on the world. The Small Scroll is the tale of the life of Jesus Christ that invites others to share in his mind and heart as the most miraculous events in human history unfold. This is a jewel of a book.
