Book The New Georgics

Download or read book The New Georgics written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human condition in rural, provincial locations is once again gaining status as a subject of European ‘high fiction’, after several decades in which it was dismissed on aesthetic and ideological grounds. This volume is one of the first attempts to investigate perspectives on local cultures, values and languages both systematically and in a European context. It does so by examining the works of a variety of authors, including Hugo Claus, Llamazares, Bergounioux and Millet, Buffalino and Consolo, and also several Soviet authors, who paint a grim picture of a collectivized – and thus ossified – rurality. How do these themes relate to the ongoing trend of globalization? How do these works, which are often experimental, connect – in their form, topics, language and ideological subtext – to the traditional rural or regional genres? Far from naively celebrating a lost Eden, most of these ‘new Georgics’ reflect critically on the tensions in contemporary, peripheral, rural or regional cultures, to the point of parodying the traditional topoi and genres. This book is of interest to those wishing to reflect on the dynamics and conflicts in contemporary European rural culture.

It lets you trace the roots of modern art, beginning with Realist paintings such as Courbet's The Stonebreakers and Millet's The Gleaners - works that shocked mid-19th-century Paris with their unblinking depiction of the lives of the poor. From Realism to Art Nouveau beautifully captures this turbulent era with an incisive text and breathtaking reproductions of works by Manet, Rossetti, Sargent, Monet, Seurat, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Rodin, Klimt and others.

Book State Capture and Rent Seeking in Benin

Download or read book State Capture and Rent Seeking in Benin written by François Bourguignon and published by . This book was released on 2023-11-22 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benin is a small, slow-growing economy whose development relies on two sources of rent that are controlled by self-centred elites: cotton export and illegal cross-border trade with Nigeria. Patrimonialism governs Beninese society as a forceful struggle for political power takes place between the oligarchs who control these sources and use them as formidable levers of power. State Capture and Rent-Seeking in Benin argues that this struggle causes the instability and unpredictability of economic policies, resulting in institutional problems that make economic diversification and growth difficult. Based on a thorough account of the economic, social, and political development of Benin, this institutional diagnostic provides a detailed analysis of its critical institution- and development-sensitive areas such as electoral campaign finance, state capture by business and elites, management of the cotton sector, the tax effort, the informal trading between Benin and Nigeria, and the political economy of land reform.

Book The Routledge International Handbook of Rural Criminology

Download or read book The Routledge International Handbook of Rural Criminology written by Joseph F Donnermeyer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 49% of the world’s population lives in small towns, villages and farms, yet until recent years criminological scholarship has focused almost exclusively on urban crimes. The Routledge International Handbook of Rural Criminology is the first major publication to bring together this growing body of scholarship under a single cover. For many years rural criminology has remained marginalized and often excluded from the mainstream, with precedence given to urban criminology: this volume intends to address that imbalance. Pioneering in scope, this book brings together leading international scholars from fourteen different countries to offer an authoritative synthesis of theoretical and empirical literature. This handbook is divided in to seven parts, each addressing a different aspect of rural criminology: Rurality and crime Criminological dimensions of food and agriculture Violence and rurality Drug use, production and trafficking in the rural context Intersections between rural and green criminology Policing, justice and rurality Teaching rural criminology Edited by a world renowned scholar of rural criminology, this book explores rural crime issues in over thirty-five countries including Japan, Sweden, Brazil, Australia, Tanzania, the US, and the UK. This is the first Handbook dedicated to rural criminology and is an essential resource for criminologists, sociologists and social geographers engaged with rural studies and crime.
