Based on a wide variety of interviews, printed sources, and Dom André Louf’s spiritual journal, The Way of the Heart narrates Louf’s spiritual journey from his childhood in Flanders through his becoming a monk in a Cistercian monastery, his ten years of retirement as a hermit in a Benedictine monastery in the south of France, and his death. During his career he struggled with conflicting vocational desires—sometimes wishing to serve as a pastor, academic, abbot, or to immerse himself in eremitic contemplation. That struggle is the leading thread through this biography, which portrays a man whose immense gifts pulled him in many directions, while always endeavoring to submit himself to God’s will.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a sequel to Christian Initiation: Baptism in the Medieval West and the second in the Hillenbrand Books series of J.D.C. Fisher's historical treatments of the sacraments of initiation. This reissue of Fisher's classic study of the sacramental rite of confirmation examines what the early rite of confirmation consisted of and what grace it was believed to confer in the period when there is undisputed evidence of the rite's existence. Like the earlier work, Christian Initiation: Baptism in the Medieval West (Chicago/Mundelein: Hillenbrand Books, 2004), Christian Initiation: Confirmation Then and Now moves from early non-biblical evidence through a survey of African, European, and Near Eastern regions in the third and fourth centuries before exploring the emergence of the ritual called confirmation in fourth-and fifth-century Gaul. Book La Cit du Logos L eccl siologie de Cl ment d Alexandrie et son enracinement christologique

Download or read book La Cit du Logos L eccl siologie de Cl ment d Alexandrie et son enracinement christologique written by Léon-Ferdinand Karuhije and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-20 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Clement of Alexandria (AD 150-215) is one of the most brilliant thinkers of the early Christian centuries. His teaching, steeped as much in the Bible as in Greek thought, reveals to us the nature of the debates in the early days of the expansion of Christianity. This book deals with a subject little studied to this day, namely his thoughts on the Church. Yet it is a recurring subject in his works, where he reflects at length on the Church from the point of view of the being and the mission of the divine Logos. Analysis of Clement’s discourse on the Church therefore makes it possible to revisit the main intuitions of his Christology while shedding light on his perception of Christian identity at a time when it is still under construction.

Book The Spiritualiity of Martyrdom

Download or read book The Spiritualiity of Martyrdom written by Servais Pinckaers and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication in English of his masterwork, The Sources of Christian Ethics, Servais Pinckaers has become the preferred guide for English-speaking students of Catholic moral theology. This late Belgian Dominican has made themes such as Beatitude, happiness, virtue, and freedom for excellence standard features of classroom instruction in ethics, moral theology, and catechesis. Father Pinckaers's new directions in moral theology came none too soon to Anglo-American moral thought, which otherwise would have become submerged completely under the waves of one kind of relativism or another. Instead of enabling cheap escapes from moral truth, Father Pinckaers directs his students to the Sermon on the Mount. There they discover that those who suffer persecution for justice's sake are called blessed or happy. This suffering may even lead to death. The present volume completes Sources. It gives us a theological account of Christian martyrdom. Authentic martyrs testify to the highest meaning that God inscribes into the moral life. In a word, nothing should deter the Christian from choosing God. No one completes a Christian life without becoming, at least, a martyr for charity. -- from back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foremost historian of Greek religion provides the first comprehensive, comparative study of a little-known aspect of ancient religious beliefs and practices. Secret mystery cults flourished within the larger culture of the public religion of Greece and Rome for roughly a thousand years. This book is neither a history nor a survey but a comparative phenomenology, concentrating on five major cults. In defining the mysteries and describing their rituals, membership, organization, and dissemination, Walter Burkert displays the remarkable erudition we have come to expect of him; he also shows great sensitivity and sympathy in interpreting the experiences and motivations of the devotees.
