Book Essays on English and American Literature

Download or read book Essays on English and American Literature written by Olivier Abiteboul and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a group of essays on 27 English or American writers contributing to the history of English and American literature, and offers a concise survey of the question of literary understanding. It approaches this question in a specific and systematic way, adopting the framework of structuralist literary criticism. The book proposes a preliminary to the understanding of literature in general, a sort of “philosophy of literature”, as the problems involved in critical reading of course reflect the powerful characteristics of literary language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a group of 14 essays on five problems of freedom and nine philosophers, contributing to the history of philosophy, and offers a concise survey of the question of freedom. It approaches this question in several ways, exploring the problems of freedom, the freedom of philosophers, and the paradoxes of freedom. The topics of these essays were chosen because of a personal, but also universal, interest: the problem of freedom makes the human condition paradoxical. We always find ourselves faced with the same structure of this paradox: a freedom which cannot be freed from its relation to necessity. Freedom is, therefore, not really free. The paradox of freedom is, thus, that of the human condition: human freedom is as paradoxical as the human condition is incomprehensible.

Download or read book Une br ve histoire de la philosophie travers les textes written by Olivier Abiteboul and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Karl Leonhard Reinhold and the Enlightenment

Download or read book Karl Leonhard Reinhold and the Enlightenment written by George di Giovanni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-24 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Leonhard Reinhold (1757-1823) is a complex figure of the late German Enlightenment. Sometime Catholic priest and active Mason even when still a cleric in Vienna; early disciple of Kant and the first to try to reform the Critique of Reason; influential teacher and prolific author; astute commentator on the immediate post-Kantian scene; and at all times convinced propagandist of the Enlightenment––in all these roles Reinhold reflected his age but also tested the limits of the values that had inspired it. This collection of essays, originally presented at an international workshop held in Montreal in 2007, conveys this multifaceted figure of Reinhold in all its details. In the four themes that run across the contributions––the historicity of reason; the primacy of moral praxis; the personalism of religious belief; and the transformation of classical metaphysics into phenomenology of mind––Reinhold is presented as a catalyst of nineteenth century thought but also as one who remained bound to intellectual prejudices that were typical of the Enlightenment and, for this reason, as still the representative of a past age. The volume contains the text of two hitherto unpublished Masonic speeches by Reinhold, and a description of recently recovered transcripts of student lecture notes dating to Reinhold’s early Jena period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: States of Decadence is a two volume anthology that focuses on the literary and cultural phenomenon of decadence. Particular attention is given to literature from the end of the 1800s, the fin de siècle; however, the essays presented here are not restricted to this historical period, but draw lines both back in time and forward to our day to illuminate the contradictory multiplicity inherent in decadence. Furthermore, the essays go beyond literary studies, drawing on a number of the tropes and themes of decadence manifested in the arts and culture, such as in music, opera, film, history, and even jewelry design.
